Just watched Pretty Woman on Lifetime and it was one of my all time favorite romances as a teen. Re-watching it, the premise is just deplorable on so many levels. Yes the performances are stellar and cute, but the woman is a prostitute and he falls in love with her. It just creeped me out and from a feminist perspective its just abysmal. The whole thing made me uncomfortable now. Wasn't it one of the highest grossing movies the year it came out. I remember taking my preteen cousin with me in the 90s-what was I thinking? I remember her saying the film was inspiring. Oh dear.
Old age has mellowed you.
Fifty bucks, Grandpa. For seventy five, the wife can watch.
Fvckin' love this movie.
Actually, its probably the opposite. If I were mellow, I wouldn't care. hahahaha

The original ending had her committing suicide.

Probably would have been a better movie if she had...

Seriously. Granted, it was the original script, but in the end, she's bought into the fantasy, while from his POV, he's just bought her, and when their time is up and she realizes she's just going back to being a wh*re, she kills herself. Of course that would never do for most of today's "feel-good" movies, so they altered the ending to make it a happy one.
It used to be quite a hit. I honestly never liked the movie as I think it's quite average.
The suicide ending makes more sense actually, but then you would never make any money in the theatres. It's the implausibility of how does someone build a life with a prostitute. Both people must be so damaged. The movie really does alternate between some darker moments and some really light comedy stuff that as an adult doesn't work so seamlessly for me.
I read an article once that talked about how the 'sequel' to Pretty Woman is Julia's film Sleeping With the Enemy (he's a jealous older husband, controlling all the money in the relationship, his much younger wife is his most prized possession, and this is how that kind of relationship ends up, etc.) and that is all I think of now when I see Pretty Woman.
"The original ending had her committing suicide."
Honestly? Wow, that would have been a great ending. I always thought it was a creepy story line. I remember reading somewhere that it was the modern day Cinderella story.

Believe me Bettyboy, it hasn't been easy....
Oh please, danmag. You can't honestly tell me miss the streets!
I meant my HUSBAND was a prostitute...
Oh! I didn't know you two were MARRIED!
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

She didn't kill herself in the original screenplay, but it was much much darker. I started a thread about it once, which I found, but can't link through it with the new devamped search engine.
The thread was called Pretty Woman vs 3000. Like I said, I can find it via search, but when I try to open it it gives me a blank page.
I like the idea of a suicide much better.
Originally Vivian just jumps down off the fire escape to see Edward and lands face first on the hood of the car. Fade to black.
Pygmalion probably had the same affect during it's day.

Okay, I found the thread I started about the screenplay, but weirdly enough the link to the screenplay is no longer there. WTF BWW?

Why in the era of DVD, movies on demand and Netflix would you watch an R-rated sex comedy on a basic cable channel like Lifetime where it is not only severely edited for language and content, but also for length to fit in the 44/22 (content/commercials) time allotted?
If the answer has something to do with the words "easy" or "lazy" I'm not really interested.

I'll tell you why I watch PRETTY WOMAN when it's aired on TV:
The TV edit of the film is different than the actual film. It was done when scenes were actually reshot to edit out language, sex etc. If you know the film by heart as so many people do, it's really quite interesting to watch it when it airs.
