I guess it's been a long time since I've had either.

Best12, I don't know if it is still there.. but there was a place in Santa Monica called Ye Olde Kings Head... a British pub.

I remember many a fab night with friends, pints of ale and THE BEST scotch eggs in the U.S.

Their Welsh Rarebit was tasty too.

Welsh rarebit! I used to make that when I was a kid. I don't think I've had that in at least 25 years!

I've never heard Red Beet Eggs called "Adobe Eggs". I thought they were strictly a Pennsylvania Dutch thing. You know, along with shoo fly pie and chow chow. Guess you learn something every day!

BFB---I LOVE Ye Olde King's Head!

My honey and I go there several times a year, but I've never ordered Scotch Eggs! I didn't know what they were, truthfully, so I didn't even notice them on the menu.

But I will be sure to try them next time.

Thanks for the tip!

I LOVE Scotch Eggs! Everyone, get over your fear.

Was it Mike Myers who said that he thinks all of Scottish cuisine was based on a dare?

In the NY area, Kearny NJ has a significant Scottish community. My wife and I go there once in a while to get blood pudding and meat pies. There must be some place(s) there where one could get Scotch Eggs.

Reg - I think your attribution is correct. One should never ask, "What is it?" with respect to Scottish cuisine. It's like asking about price in high-end shops. If you have to ask...

OK! OK!

Seriously, do you need a deep fryer or can you do it in a regular pan?

I haven't thought about these in years. My gran used to make these for my sister and I for breakfast when we'd go over to her house to stay. It's really just your regular basic breakfast, only the egg and sausage aren't occupying two separate areas of the plate.

I just fry mine in a regular pot. I don't have a deep fryer.

Do you use regular vegetable oil?

Next time I go to the grocery store I'll get some breakfast sausage. I think I have everything else!

Yes, I use Wesson vegetable oil. I bet canola would taste good, too.

OK, one last question. You don't cook the sausage first do you? Just wrap it around the egg raw?

That is correct! Cook the eggs first, but not the sausage.

I use peanut oil for deep frying. Its higher smoking point is better suited to it. And it's low in saturated and trans fats. And, no, it doesn't have a nutty taste.

Art has a double face, of expression and illusion.

I don't have a deep fat fryer, either. I do them in about an inch or two of oil.

It's sort of like frying meatballs.

Deep frying would certainly be easier.
