Shallow Reflections on the Inauguration, DC and So Forth

Posted: 1/20/09 at 5:13pmActually, there are empty seats for the parade, near the Presidential viewing stand. CNN had been reporting that getting around DC was difficult today, and crossing Pennsylvania Ave was nearly impossible.

Posted: 1/20/09 at 5:17pmFor someone who wanted to see the parade, I'm sorry to see a lot of empty seats in the stands right there on Pennsylvania Avenue. It could be they closed the area off if a certain number of people were reached in any of the viewing areas. I at least got into the swearing in ceremony, but my boss who also had a ticket never made it in as the area had already been closed off by the time he got there.

Posted: 1/20/09 at 5:30pmI loved how when Rick Warren was doing the prayer, he said Sasha like "Sa-SHA." We were watching the inaguration in physics, and were basically saying what is being said here. But Sasha is SOO tall. And I also love how when the put the blocks out for Malia and Sasha to stand on, Obama was like "Those are for you!" It was just so normal and casual, and it made him seem human. I also feel kind of bad for Obama for messing up the oath, but again, it made him seem human and like anyone else.

Posted: 1/20/09 at 5:33pmObama didn't mess up the oath. Chief Justice Roberts did. Obama corrected him.

Posted: 1/20/09 at 5:34pmActually, Chief Justice Roberts messed up the oath, and that threw Obama off.

Posted: 1/20/09 at 5:40pmI missed the parade.......

Posted: 1/20/09 at 5:43pmOh now I see all the empty seats. The commentators said that security wanted to close off Pennsylvania Avenue early, thinking that enough people had crossed over, so they shut it down. Looks like they miscalculated.

Oh I forgot to make my shallow comments.
I liked Michelle's outfit. Jill Biden is gorgeous. I think Joe is very handsome in a dignified way. Barack is hot. Sasha and Malia are adorable and I loved their little coats, especially Malia's with the blue ribbon (the older one is Malia right? Now I'm second guessing myself)
Laura looked lovely. Dubya looks old. Bill Clinton does look older, but he still has that charming smile where his eyes crinkle up, which I find attractive. Oh and Hillary looked nice today - that color looks good on her.

My shallow comments:
I was cracking up watching Obama trying SO HARD not to smile when he was walking out. He looked so happy! It was kind of adorable. Dick Cheney in a wheelchair seemed almost suspicious, like he did it on purpose. I liked Michelle Obama's dress (and I LOVED Sasha's coat), but I was really distracted by the way the big bow on the front of Mrs. Obama's dress kept blowing around in the wind.
Also, when Biden came out, my little sister said, "Who's that?" And I said, "That's Biden." She perked up and chirped, "Oh, you mean Obama Biden?" Yep. That's right. She thought the guy's name was Obama Biden because of the posters and buttons and stuff with "Obama/Biden" on them.

Schmerg, how old is your sister?
My son is 6, and he came home from school the other day and said, "Do you know who Joe Biden is?" And I said, "Yes. Do you?" His response: "He's going to be our new Vice-President." I'm impressed. I do not think I knew who the VP was when I was 6.

Did the wheelchair-bound Dick Cheney remind anyone else of Mr. Potter?
"You're a warped, frustrated old man! Sick in your heart, sick in you soul if you have one!"

Miss Pennywise-- My sister is actually fourteen... but I think she was half-asleep.
She keeps denying she ever said that, but she SO DID.
I remember when I was seven, a kid in my class told me that Clinton was going to be impeached, and I thought that meant they were going to put him inside a giant peach-- because our teacher was reading us "James and the Giant Peach." I still think of that book whenever I hear the word 'impeached.' Also, when I was eight, I thought Al Gore's name was Al Gourd.
Joe-- That's the exact same vibe I got. When the news commenter said he'd been having health issues, specifically with his heart, my dad said, "Namely being that he doesn't have one."

Joe, when Darth Cheney was first shown on TV in the wheelchair, someone else posted the Mr. Potter analogy, and I haven't been able to get that image of crotchety old Lionel Barrymore out of my mind all day! So perfect!!! (Barack Obama = George Bailey)
Schmerg, now that you mention it, being "impeached" does sound kinda nice. I never really thought about it before!
More ammunition for the argument that "Darth" doesn't have a heart (or a soul): HE also looks exactly same as he did 8 years ago. He's not human!

I watched all day. Taking a break, eating and mixing a cocktail to get ready to wath the Neighborhood Ball this evening.
Did anyone notice how Barbra Bush (Sr!) was walking ahead of her husband on the way to the swearing in through the capitol? The man was hobbling on a cane and she like left him in the dust. Seemed to confirm the not so nice things we have heard about her.
