Kristin Chenoweth will be performing for George W. Bush's inauguration. She is performing for a man who represents the absolute worst example when it comes to music and theatre and all of the people who are involved with these mediums. Does she not have any gay or lesbian friends? This man hates gays and lesbians and so apparently does much of the Republican party after this recent election. Yes, there will be those make the argument that she is performing a song for those who are fighting in the war. Those who are fighting won't be entertained by her song, only those straight, white Republicans who are attending the event will be hearing her.
It's bad enough that those of us who are gay/lesbian and feel that this country is continuing to turn against us, as evidenced by this last horrible election, but to have a performer that so many of us (gay men, particularly) have supported throughout her career is a real slap in the face.
I'm curious to see if anyone else feels as disappointed by her choice to perform at the inauguration as I do.

More than Dissapointed. I was planning on purchasing her CD, but I have decided against it.
I hate bush but if Kristin believes in Bush and his views, she has the right. Her choice. Just my opinion.

While I am disappointed with *anyone* associated with that man, can you really blame her? She was asked to perform by (presumably) someone high up on the food chain in Washington, which is an honor, regardless of who is in the White House. Plus, if her performance is televised, she will get more national exposure. While the decision isn't a great one morally (to some, myself included), its not a bad decision for her career.
Amen to ZippyJen. You know we can cry and scream when the republican party tries to criticize people like Susan Sarandon from voicing their opinion, yet we crucify Kristen Chenoweth for supporting something she believes in?
It's an unfair double standard.
And I hardly think it's unfair for you to say that President Bush "hates" Gays, just because he doesn't support us.
I have good friends who don't support my lifestyle, but still love me as a person. And they too have a right to believe whatever the hell they want.

If it makes you feel any better she will be performing alongside JoJo and Hillary Duff. HAHAHA What a line up he attracts.

Yes, it IS a bad career move when you bitch slap the majority of the audience who has helped you to build a career. And you don't have to perform just because you were asked to. MANY people have enough self respect to say 'no' to a person that theyd on't support.. so obviously Cheno supports Bush.. which is an utter betrayal to many of the people who helped her get to where she is today. You can NOT support 'president Bush' and claim to be friend with gay men and lesbians. If you support Bush, then you are telling your gay/lesbian friends that you are not supportive of them anbd do not consider them to be your equal.
She's a Christian from Oklahoma. How is this surprising? Personally, I'd be more surprised if she refused it.
I believe that Kristin has the right to perform for whoever she wishes, however we as her public have the right to tell her that we do not approve of her decision and that it definitely colors our opinion of her as a person. I do agree with the initial post, that it is shameful for someone in the theatrical community, who works with and most like has gay friends, to accept any invitation offered by this horrible excuse for a president and human being.
xXvegan,
I'm not criticizing Kristin AT ALL; she can do what she wants. But your reliance on the "love the sinner, hate the sin" is a little ridiculous.

Being gay IS a major part of who you are as a person. If they are not accepyting of that, then they do NOT accept YOU.

And that is all that needs to be said. If you don't like it, write her a letter. Thank you, eslgr8.

broadwayguy2: Perhaps she is supportive of Bush in some ways, and unsupportive of him in others! That is always a possibility! She was raised an old-fashioned Christian from the South, so maybe she supports some things that have to do with incorporating Christianity into our American culture (which I disagree with, but you have to admit that the founding fathers incorporated it). I'm sure that whoever you voted for had some ideas that you disagreed with, but you still supported them. So why should she put her fans' beliefs and gay people's beliefs before her own??
I still think she is a fantastic performer, and I have no place to judge anyone. None of us on this board know her! We shouldn't be judging her! Perhaps she is vehemently against his policies toward gay people, but she supports something else of his. There are many possibilities.

I'm not just characterized by my homosexuality thanks.
I'd prefer that, than just being seen as a gay person. That's the problem with so many people, is that's all they see me as, and ignore everything else.
I'm proud of who I am, but my homosexuality isn't ALL I am.
Kristin can perform for whoever she wants. That is the truth. I always thought she was a Republican, yess another reason for me to love this woman.
If you won't buy her CD because she performed for George Bush, you are just ridiculous.
"Being gay IS a major part of who you are as a person. If they are not accepyting of that, then they do NOT accept YOU."
Not true at all. I have friends who are extremely religious, and because of their beliefs do not accept homosexuality, but they love me enough to accept me. Being gay is not 100% of who you are - any more than being Republican, Democrat, skinny, or short is. You'll learn that the longer you live.
This is probably the wrong thing to say on such a liberal board, but I think it's great she is performing. I dont' see why it's necessary to bash her. She is singing for a very important occasion, and if she believes in Bush... or if she has the same views as he does, then yay for her. Let her do what she pleases, even if it doesn't always please her fans...

Bottom line it is her choice. It's also good that she hear how folks feel about it.
I'm not surprised, and not because I believe she supports Bush, but because all of her choices have clearly been to promote her own exposure. I do not see her making statements of principle political or otherwise.
Rathnait, thank for saying what I was attempting to say, much more eloquently than what I accomplished.
and people also have the right to choose not to support Cheno after this decision as well, without being called "ridiculous."

Also, being gay is only a major part of you if you CHOOSE to make it a major part of you. I don't see straight people running around with Straight Pride paraphernalia. If they did, I'm sure that the gay community would flip their lid. I, myself, am a gay man, but I choose not to make it a big thing because there is so much else to know about me. When I meet someone new, I never tell them I'm gay. Eventually, they just realize it. There is SO much more to people than their sexual orientation, and that goes for gay, straight, bi, etc.
Kangaroo- You have took the words right out of my mouth. Thank you.
Also, just because she performs for Bush doesen't mean she hates gays! Come one, give me a break. If some of you think that, you are extremely immature and small minded.
She also has the right to wear a perennial malibu barbie faux tan, nylon hair extensions and circa 2004 makeup in the various period pieces in which she's appeared. I have the right to despise her and everything she stands for. Another super career move, midgetty!
