I moved from NYC to the West Coast almost 30 years ago, but the issues in the mid-1980s were the same: my husband and both worked all the time just to support a lower-middle-class lifestyle. We finally decided we might as well do that in LA (while still expensive, much cheaper) and work half the hours.
One thing rorschach hasn't mentioned is his age and it's none of my business. But the older you are, the quicker the romance of living hand-to-mouth in Manhattan wears off.

"Just doing this to make money to get my degree" is a great hustler rap.

Posted: 7/10/13 at 6:58pmIf people are moving away from NYC due to cost, don't even think about moving to Vancouver in Canada. My parents were there for a couple of days last month as their cruise to Alaska was leaving from there. They said that it is much more expensive than NYC.

^^^^ Perfect age for a move to New York. But do note the advice of the posters above. It will be tough for awhile.
(Personally, I think EVERYONE should live in New York in his or her 20s. Then, a lot of us need to move on.)
BTW, transferring to a NYC college may be one way to make the transition. It would give you time to make some contacts that will help you find work when you are graduated.

I say now is the time to have all your adventures in life! I made a big move from NY to LA at your age, and ended up coming back. It's not forever if it doesn't work out. Life isn't a dress rehearsal - get up and do what you want to do!
that's my philosophy anyway...

I used to think this too. NYC used to be a single person's town. It was fun, it was funky, it had an energy that was radical. Then came Friends and Sex/City and made it the most boring place on Earth.

What's it from?
Everyone should live in New York but leave before it makes them hard.
Everyone should live in San Francisco but leave before it makes them soft.

It's from "Everybody's Free to Wear Sunscreen." Great advice!

Yes, it is good advice.
Thanks for the correction, gothampc. I have visited NY only rarely since I moved West and therefore bow to your opinion.

Posted: 7/11/13 at 1:28pmGaveston, I'm half joking. Personally, I don't think NYC is as exciting as some of the European capitals. NYC has become too sterile with Starbucks on every corner and Times Square restaurants being chains that anyone can find anywhere in the US (Red Lobster, Applebees, etc). NYC became too expensive for smaller competitors.

Posted: 7/11/13 at 2:54pmI moved here to go to college in 73 and never left. Somehow I feel if I hadn't moved here at that time I never would have. As I get older, I tend to seek out quiet solitude and the energy of the city can be quite overwhelming at times. I noticed it most when I lived in the Financial district.

New Jersey.
And I don't mean Hoboken or Fort Lee.
Look into Clifton/Garfield, or Linden.
Affordable, easy commute, and get yourself established, then make your move.

You never know. You might be that one-in-a-million kid who comes here, breaks through all the rotten STUFF you gotta put up with, and actually makes it. Someone's got to! Try it! It might be you.
But if you never try, you'll never, ever know.
