What are your hopes for her next Broadway cd? I hope she stays away from Andrew Lloyd Webber, Rodgers & Hammerstein and Guys & Dolls.
Here are my thoughts:
Another Winter In A Summer Town (Grey Gardens)
Will You? (Grey Gardens)
There's A Fine, Fine Line (Avenue Q)
The Light In The Piazza (The Light In The Piazza)
Dividing Day (The Light In The Piazza)
Back To Before (Ragtime)
I Know The Truth (Aida)
For Good (Wicked)
My Eyes Adored You (Jersey Boys)
Some Things Are Meant To Be (Little Women)
Sunday (Sunday In The Park With George) - but only if she overdubs her vocals in a way similar to what Barry Manilow did with One Voice so that it sounds like 10 Streisands singing at once - it would be beautiful
Lastly, can only Streisand admirers respond - I hope this doesn't turn into a Streisand-bashing thread!

She doesn't have the pipes for that song any longer and I was trying to keep her choices to modern shows. She relied too heavily on the Golden Age of Broadway on her first two Broadway cds - she needs to sing songs from relatively current shows. I realize Sunday is 20 years old at this point, but I included it because it is one of my absolute favorites.

Since I think she is the worst interpreter of show music, I think she should just stay away from all of it.
Of course she can still sing ROSE'S TURN. Tyne Daly sang the song for Christ's sake. And the audience for any Streisand CD is mostly gay or over 50: she will not do an exclusively "modern" Broadway collection.
John, whether you like her or not, Streisand's Broadway cds bring Broadway songs to people who may not know or care about Broadway. No other popular singer now, except perhaps Tony Bennett who doesn't really sing Broadway songs, will expose as large a group of non-Broadway theatre goers to these songs. Her first two Bway cds went to number 1 on the Billboard charts and may inspire some listeners to actually pick up the original versions of the songs that she covers.
Love her or hate her, she still sells cds and will bring this type of music into homes, cars and MPG players that may not normally be exposed to it.
Michael, it is one thing for a non-singer to do Rose's Turn on stage and hit it out of the park with an amazing acting performance - it is another thing for a singer to do the song without the visual. 10 years ago, Streisand would've done a great job with the song. She just doesn't have the power in her vocals any longer to do the song justice and I'd rather she not try at this point in her career.
As for pandering to her 50+ fan base, I just hope she will sample the amazing songs in current and recent shows. The classics are wonderful, but she's done them. Time for her to expand her song choices where these types of cds are concerned.
I was only speaking about how I feel about her singing. I don't hate her voice, I just hate the way she sings Broadway.
And you are certainly entitled to your opinion. I don't always appreciate her arrangements (Move On - awful), but better to have these songs in the mainstream than not at all.
Not sure I'd consider her "mainstream" anymore.
Perhaps not, but her cds still land in the top ten upon release. She still sells better than any of her contemporaries, except perhaps Tony Bennett and even his last cd has Streisand on it.
Pianoman, if you are going to ask for people's opinions on what she should be singing on a "fictional" Broadway album that isn't even planned - and than cut down everyone's opinion who responds - people aren't going to want to play your game. Just saying....
A bit sensitive this morning Michael? I'm not cutting your song choice down or ridiculing you for it, just stating my opinion on it and offering a valid reason why I wouldn't want her to sing it. Just trying to have a dialogue.
I think it's a pretty vast statement to say that you hate the way Barbra sings Broadway. Of course you can feel that way, but she has sung SO many Broadway songs. Her vocal/emotional performances of "A Sleepin' Bee", "Down With Love", "Any Place I Hang My Hat", "Never Will I Marry", "He Touched Me", "I Can See It", "How Does The Wine Taste?" etc are beyond amazing I think. Beautiful voice, beautiful intrepretations.
"For Good?"
UGH. NO.
I don't agree with "The Light in the Piazza" either.
Actually, I think For Good would make a nice duet for the album - perhaps with Linda Eder.
Maybe on her next album there could be less planning and more improvising?

"Actually, I think For Good would make a nice duet for the album - perhaps with Linda Eder."
How would we know it was a duet?
"How would we know it was a duet?"
Because Eder doesn't come CLOSE to the real thing.

But, other than some stuff in HELLO, DOLLY!, I do hate the way she sings Broadway tunes. All of them. How else should I have worded that? None of the recordings, you mention above, do I like. I think they are all over-produced, bombastic bores, all with versions that I like by someone else, better. I hate them by her. That's allowed, isn't it? I mean, it's still a free country and all that.

I read once that she recorded Unusual Way (Nine) and Home (The Wiz) for a previous Broadway album but they weren't used - I'd like to hear them.I'd also like to hear Some People (Gypsy).
