The first thing that comes to mind with books to make you cry is The Time-Traveler's Wife. Beautiful book about love and separation.
Am I the only one who REALLY doesn't like Brave New World? I love 1984 and Lord of the Flies, but Brave New World makes me want to do something painful to myself.

My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Piccoult. Bawled my eyes out.
Also anything by Pat Conroy.

Posted: 6/21/08 at 12:26pmI second Three Junes, which--to me--is the perfect summer novel. (I re-read it every year) A moving and life-affirming story, beautifully written by Glass. Her follow-up novel, The Whole World Over, is also worth reading.

Ok, as I read all the responses the two I really wanted to recommed to you have already been suggested so let me double recommend,
Kite Runner and
The Perks of Being a Wallflower,
and let me really disagree with The Road.
There was actually a thread on The Road last year, I hated that book and found it a huge waste of time.

I didn't really like the Road either. It was the most depressing thing I ever read.
I agree with the Kite Runner too though.

Posted: 6/21/08 at 4:29pmThank you everyone!!! I read The Time Traveler's Wife last month, and absolutely LOVED it. I bought Lord of the Flies last night, after an hour of hard decision over at Barnes and Noble. I have the rest of your suggestions written down for when I am done with this one.

Posted: 6/21/08 at 4:38pmI have the Time Traveler's Wife on my bookshelf. I've tried a couple of times to read it and I just can't seem to get into it. I guess I should give it another shot.

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. I don't think it will make you cry, but I feel like it has a great message. Basically about following one's dreams and centers on this shepherd boy from Spain.

God, I have a summer reading list the size of Texas. Currently, I'm half way through Seth Rudetsky's Broadway Nights, and after that, I have...
Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
The Girl on the Fridge (and other Stories by Etgar Keret
This Is Your Brain on Music: The Science of Human Obsession by Daniel J. Levitin
Complete Stories by Dorothy Parker
Reviving Ophelia: Saving the Selves of Adolescent Girls by Mary Pipher, PhD
Pitch Perfect: The Quest for Collegiate A Cappella Glory by Mickey Rapkin
Sisterhood, Interrupted: From Radical Women to Grrls Gone Wild by Deborah Siegel
Odd Girl Out: The Hidden Culture of Aggression in Girls by Rachel Simmons
So yeah, that should keep me busy.

Posted: 6/22/08 at 12:32amI just completed Fahrenheit 451 yesterday and although I wasn't too great a fan of it, it totally screams summer reading to me.

I want to echo the praise for "Perks of Being a Wallflower."
I also highly reccomend "Flowers for Algernon" if you haven't read it. We did in 7th Grade, and I was the only one who cried (aside from my teacher). Beautiful moving story.

Am I a dork for thinking that it would be awesome to have a BWW book club?
One book that I read before I started college was Siddhartha by Herman Hesse. It's an interesting book to read at different parts of your life.
Right now, I'm reading the latest novel in the Stephanie Plum series. Perfect light summer reading

Posted: 6/23/08 at 1:35amThe Virgin Suicides I thought was extremely well written. Some people I know thought it was depressing but I thought it was beautiful, and one of the most accurate portrayals of teen life I've read in a book. It's a good movie too!

I'm up for a book club too!
In other news, 'Bel Canto' by Ann Patchett is gorgeous. I've read almost everything by Patchett and this one might be my favorite.

I second The Cider House Rules and My Sister's Keeper.
I also recommend The Tenth Circle and The Other Boleyn Girl. They may not make you cry (well TTC is sad), but they're both good.
And if you wanna go the theatre route, Without You, Anthony Rapp's autobiography, is so, so, so good and it WILL make you cry.
