What a great episode... there was just enough drama and humor! This Dad and daughter thing has to work out, because I do like her and want them to go far... but if he doesn't learn how to stop patronizing and being rather pretentious, then they deserve to be eliminated.
Sad to see the married couple go, they were very optimistic, but I didn't imagine them lasting very long.

Posted: 11/12/07 at 7:24amI love how Ronald went off on Nicolas at the airport for being rude and disrespectful of the ticket agents, then TOTALLY berated his daughter for the rest of the leg. If I were her, I would have shoved that pole up his ass and quit. He is intolerable.

My thought at the end of the episode:
"Well, I guess God really doesn't care if the lesbian pastors win the Amazing Race."

That is why I loved the lesbian pastors...in the beginning of the episode, the admit that God isnt probably very concerned about whether they win this race or not. Finally some religious racers who realize that God has bigger fish to fry!
BUT...I cant stand how they strolled like it was a vacation...it's a race! MOVE! If you see that the bus is about to leave, run for it! Sheesh.
I hate the "father" and love the daughter...what to do? How do I root? I hold out NO hope that he will see the light about how he treats her.

Posted: 11/12/07 at 6:03pmI still can't decide who to like. So far everyone I liked has gotten the boot. I thought Ari bitchiness would be fun, and was partial to the lesbian ministers. Can't stand the dad. So I guess I'll root for the goth's...they will probably get kicked off next week.

The brother/sister team still seem mildly squicky - did he really call her "babydoll" or "babycakes" when they found the bikes?
Ick.
(And that Ronald/Christina drama completely brought out all of the Asian father issues I still harbour...had literal sympathy pains...I don't think he'll ever see the light, but I hope he gets his comeuppance and Christina takes his remarks with a grain of salt and grows a backbone.)

The recapper on Television Without Pity noted that for Goths, those two are awfully perky and chipper.
I call my dog "Baby girl." I don't make out with her, though.

She is totally having a breakdown! And is that camel really kicking that bowl THAT many times?!!
edit: But they just made it!

SO I finally got caught up and what can I say about the previous episode that hasn't been said. Apparently, Karma visited Bad Dad in the form of an ulcer and that is going to make the race pretty much suck for him for a while. Yikes.
Every freaking time I see "Marianna and Julia" on the screen, my brain sees "Marijuana". And as much as I loved Team Marijuana, and as much as they didn't deserve it considering how they coped with the barren camels, I won't be seeing Teram Marijuana again. No doubt Grandpa is equally, if not more, upset. Sounds like Team Marijuana served as his little blue pill from what he had to say about them, which...ew.
I do love the "Grandpa" shirt. It's so efficient. It not only provides a useful label for which to substitute his name, which we will not remember anyway, but it also eliminates the need to ask that cumbersome yet polite question, "Do you have grandkids?"
Well, we have found the shrieker this season and her name is Lorena. She really seemed to be invoking the spirit of Flo, especially in the way she had to relate every detail in a completely annoying and useless way by childishly WAAAH-ing such helpful things like, "It kicked the bowl!" or "It's moving!" to her partner, who really can't do anything to help. I mean, what could he say? Other than, "Stop f*cking shrieking! You're scaring the camel!", I mean. Honestly, if someone was trying to milk me and making those kind of sounds, I would kick her ass away, too. Seriously.
And just as in the true spirit of Team Flo, they managed to eke out in the end and not be eliminated. So we can be subjected to the awfulness of Team Shriek possibly to the very end. All I can say is, no wonder she wants to marry that guy. He's the only one still around after hearing that mess. Now we know why he likes to keep one foot out the door. Personally, I would have both feet firmly down the block. In another state, preferably.
Though I cannot STAND the blondes, who have rather disgustingly displayed their narrow-minded self-centeredness to the entire country, I did sympathize with their plight involving the cab driver. Con artists who prey on tourists unfamiliar with the culture and surroundings deserve jail time. But when I weigh the sins of the con artist against the behavior of the blondes, the back of my brain goes, "Hee!" So, there it is. And did she say they didn't have time to do their makeup? The closeup of the same shot tells us they had plenty of time to dip their faces in a bowl of Mary Kay before getting in the cab. They were perilously close to being Goths.
The other teams were fairly unremarkable, which is a bit of a letdown. I loved the Teach/Learn task. I probably would have gone with Learn as there was more of a known variable, which is how quickly you can memorize something. Teach totally relies upon the unknown, which is how well the kids could pick up on the words. But it was really cool to watch. I disagree that it was the "stereotypical Amazing Race in Africa episode" simply because of the Teach/Learn task. But honestly, what would you have them do differently?
#63re: THE AMAZING RACE 12 STARTS TONIGHT!
Posted: 11/19/07 at 10:49amI did not mean stereotypical by means of tasks that needed to be completed. I am talking about the teams reactions to Africa, nothing different than how they usually are.

I missed the first two episodes, so I finally thought I would catch up last night. Then, because I had DVR'd it, I missed the last 15 minutes thanks to the late start. I've decided I'm just not meant to see this season.

Calvin - Every season you have to record Amazing Race and Cold Case as it is ALWAYS preempted. Catch up! I think you can watch them on the CBS website as well. So far, it's shaping up to be a good season.
PS....GO DONKEYS!

Posted: 11/19/07 at 2:16pmMatt, I think you should amend that to, "Go donkeys AND camels!"

I loved the teach/learn task as well...but my instinct would be to teach, as kids have a better ability to grasp memorization than us fogeys. That said, I was surprised how few thanked their "kids" for the help! Some made an off hand "Thanks" to them and only the hernia's daughter reached out to awkwardly hug her "kid" which I thought was sweet.
The sweet contestants are always my favorites. The ones who seem interested in saying hello to the local just before the philimination...the one who doesnt shreak at the cab driver, but asks nicely to go fast fast fast and praises them if they go faster...that kind of thing....it helps if they're funny too.
That is what is so weird about the father/daughter team...hate him, love her...what to do?!

Lorena shreaking? It was like a hug from Jesus! I had nothing really against this team, but once this kind of behavior starts, I just want to see a smackdown by the end...which wasnt completely fulfilled since they were NOT eliminated, but the other team was almost as annoying, "They're right behind us...and they're running!" "Do you want to run?"
IT'S A FREAKING RACE!!! RUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I also noticed that she reached out to give her student a hug. That's not to say the others didn't, keep in mind this stuff is edited to play with our emotions (just my opinion).
I personally love that team and I think the dad will come around and redeem himself. He's already stated that he needs to work on it and admitted she's better at leading. Besides, he was singing an English war anthem while dragging camels in Africa... how can you be mad at that? LOL Too funny!

Posted: 11/19/07 at 3:55pmAfter last night's hideous display, Lorena deserves a dip in the Skank Tank.

I think it would be hard to find a pic of Lorena by herself, Dottie...but skank away!
Popular, I know that these are edited to toy with us, but they showed the "thank you" interactions of most of the couples and I think the kids deserved money, if not a hug or a handshake...they were the third part of their team! I loved the awkward hug Christina gave.

As far as the camels go, I do give them major props for not managing to crush Lorena's skull (as I would have done). BUT, it's not like they really had to do a whole lot but stand there. It's not like they CHOSE to stop giving milk. In that respect, the donkeys are way cooler. They were carrying and walking and running and when they were fed up with bullsh*t, those motherf*ckers just STOP and don't move until they feel like it. You really gotta respect that.
As for the hugging thing, well...I'm sorta iffy on that. I do believe a "thank you" is absolutely necessary, especially when the locals help you FINISH A TASK, but I really don't think a hug is the best idea in a foreign culture. You never know when it might be considered an insult, a tasteless offense, or even a threat of physical assault. I prefer to assume not everyone is touchy-feely, but a show of gratitude is most definitely required.
And Bad Dad is trying, so let's all just give him a chance. If he starts berating his daughter again, then may God have mercy on his digestive sytem. He may get smote with colonitis next.
Can we have a head-shaving fast-forward please? Just for the hippies? Caucasian dreds never EVER look cool. And the wool knit Peruvian shepherd's hat really only looks charming if you are a shepherd in Peru. With actual sheep. Otherwise, no.
Go donkeys!
God, I love those donkeys. I would love an entire episode of Lorena milking donkeys as they carry peat across a Peruvian shepherd's field (the hippies can attend so Rachel's hat will have some relevance) as Jason stands by and watches. They can compete against Zach/Flo and Jonathan/Victoria. And maybe Colon/Crusty just so we can get a sound byte that his donkey is broken. One full hour. No commercials.
