Texas Chainsaw Massacre Special Edition 2DVD!

I just got the special edition 2DVD pack, and it's filled with some great stuff, including an hour and fifteen minute "making of and comparison with the original film!"

this is a much better buy than the single disc dvd out there!

did anyone like or hate this film?

I enjoyed it. and now i appreciate it even more, learning about the behind the scenes aspects and that the cinematographer from the original did the remake!

Some how watching people getting chopped up is not my idea of entertainment. I never cared for any of the "slash and hack" movies.

Are we talking about the original or the recent remake?

I had grown up being told that [the original] was a true story--that happened in Texas. I have family members who swear they remember when it happened. But, I keep reading that none of it is true--that it is merely based off of Ed Gein of Wisconsin and his murder of 2 girls so that he could wear they skin to make himself a woman---hence, inspiration for Silence of the Lambs.

Anyone with more info?

The original Texax Chainsaw was LOOSELY based on the story of Ed Gein. And in my opinion happens to be one of the scariest movies ever made.
However, I think the recent remake was one of the WORST movies of last year. Not scary or creepy...just gross and gory. The original did not rely on gross outs to scare the audience...in fact there was little gore at all. The remake was just a splatter fest. One of the few movies in recent memory that I really wanted to walk out on...

There was NO Chainsaw Massacre in Texas, although people talk like there was. They made it up. It's based on Ed Gein and Tobe Hooper thought it would be cool to see people get chopped up by a chainsaw. But it's entirely a work of fiction.

That being said, the remake was terrible, a slick and insipid take on a classic movie. The original worked because it felt almost like a snuff film with an uneasy sense of reality around it. This was just another horror movie with crappy modern angst added to Leatherface and lacking all the real unsettling vibe of the original.

I was looking forward to the remake but by the end of it the only thing I liked was Jessica Biel's wardrobe.

well it is based on the story of ed gein and how he killed two woman and made clothing and masks out of their skin = leatherface. gein also ate his victims, he also dug up dead women and was a necrofeliac.

also one day in the 70's tobe hopper was at hardware store and the line was insane, so his mind wandered to the chainsaw section and he thought to himself, "i just need to chainsw these people down so i can get to the front"

a mixture of ed gein, leatherface, cannibalism and chainsaws made the texas chainsaw massacre.

i enjoyed the new remake. the most intense scene was in the van with the cop and the kid as the cop asks him to reenact the suicide. you know the actor playing the kid actually made himself gag and that's his REAL vomit you see on the scene!

I was on the edge of my seat with suspense. i didn't think the movie was gory. it actually cut away from the violence and gore instead of showing it!! (they even talk about how the movie was supposed to be rated x for all the blood and gore but they edited it for an r rating) i think it's mostly R for the sick storyline rather than gore. i was mostly afraid of the sheriff, and the weirdo families than i was of leatherface. the whole film had this sick and twisted atmosphere that was bone chilling.

but still, would YOU really throw up on camera to intensify the scene?

In the making of documentary they talked about that scene in detail and they show the behind the scenes of the actor literally vomiting on tape. He took several takes of the scene, and each time vomiting in fear of being killed! Now THAT'S in the moment, lemme tell you. And THIS is the scene that scared me the MOST!!!

i usually throw up no matter what scene i'm in and whether the script calls for it or not. it just helps get me in the mood.

not to mention all the physical pain the actors had to go through to make the picture, watching the making of segment really made me appreciate the film a lot more.

Maybe we saw different versions of the movie (don't continue to read if you still haven't eaten Dof). The movie I saw contained a scene that showed (in graphic detail) a man get his leg sawed off below the knee, then get dreagged into a basement (tearing off a fingernail on the way) where he was placed onto a meathook. Then...just for kicks Leatherface rubs salt into his bloody stump. Not to mention we get to see the results of a gunshot wound to the head...complete with the camera zooming through the gaping wound. Now if this is what you consider cutting away from the violence and gore...I hate to see what you do consider a gory movie....

well i'm talking about the scene where he hangs the guy up by his arms and then uses the chainsaw on him, in the original edit leatherface places the chainsaw between his legs and cuts him all the way up so that he splits in half and there's a shot of his intestines falling to the floor!

or the actual meathook scene wasn't very graphic... until he tried to get off of it, now THAT was gross! Updated On: 4/4/04 at 05:47 PM

you should actually check it out. a very rare horror film today in the senses that it is not a comedy in any way.

meaning the nightmare and jason frnachise turned to a laugh fest to counteract the gore.

this remake is intense, and stomach turning. it's eerie and seat clenching from the very first scene, to the last minute. there's no laughs, no time to relax. you are forced to think about what you would do in this situation. it's an all out psychologically twisted film that gets under your skin.

in the line of Seven and other pychological horror films
totally recommended

well, that tears it, i surely won't be seeing it now that i know that it will force me to think about what i would do if i were stranded with a bunch of useless friends and being attacked by an clan of inbred rednecks who like to eat human flesh and wear it too. avoiding having to think about this scenario is precisely why i opted not to go to the democratic national convention this year!

cool, that's your opinion and you, ofcourse are entitled to it.
i guess it IS gross, it could have been more gross, and gross means different things to different people.

I found it neither gross nor disturbing. Gross is fairly subjective but I've seen plenty of horror movies and nothing in this flick was anything new or unsightly. I've seen plenty of limbs get severed, in my day.

But, no, it was too polished to be disturbing. The sets looked like sets, the characters were over the top and put on and unconvincing and, sadly, poor Jessica Biel had to keep thinking everyone was going to help her when even the most ignorant of audience member knew they weren't. The original didn't rely on such physical and dramatic caricature to get its 'creepiness' across and the grainy film stock and straight-forward camera work gave it that hint of documentary that 'Blair Witch' would eventually exploit to huge box office and notoriety.

This remake was all style and no tone. It was just another horror movie with pretty Hollywood kids running around in circles and a newbie director who let his director's eye get in the way of making something genuine and freaky. All those shots in the woods with the light coming through the trees? Sure, nice shots but they killed the world of the movie because they were so obviously shots set up by a movie director and they contradicted his attempts in other scenes to give a sort of gritty realism to the piece.

See now, there was only one actual set.The trailer where Jessica Biel ends up only to be drugged is a set. Every other scene was shot on location.

Nothing precious, plain to see, don't make a fuss over me. Not loud, not soft, but somewhere inbetween. Say sorry, just let it be the word you mean.
