Most all films have an international appeal. Babel is a film that speaks to everyone universally.
StageManager2, there's no need to be rude. We were having a discussion.
munk, THE DEPARTED is absolutely a drama. How is it NOT a drama? And I agree, THE DEPARTED shouldn't be nominated - but we aren't talking personal opinion here. We're talking "would be" not "should be."
And I'm sure THE QUEEN will get tons of votes. Just not as many as THE DEPARTED, DREAMGIRLS, BABEL, or LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE. In my opinion, it's a great film. A solid film. Great performances by Sheen and Mirren. But it's not as appeasing as other films this year, such as THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND, DREAMGIRLS, BABEL, LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE, etc. Let's just say for the heck of it that THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND and THE QUEEN are both equal in the quality of its movie-making, screenplay, performances, etc. Which would you award Best Picture to? My vote would go to THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND. Comes down to taste. And from what I hear, the taste of the Academy isn't so much for THE QUEEN as it is for the other four films.
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."
