"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

I have not seen some of the Oscar films out now, and of course there are many yet to open. I have no idea.

I wouldn't discount Diane Lane or Ben Affleck for HOLLYWOODLAND just yet.

I didn't love FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS. I thought it was well made, but not best picture material. I would stick UNITED 93 or LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE in there over FLAGS. BABEL as well.

Nicole Kidman in FUR could also be a strong contender. I've heard she is quite good.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

'The Prestige' for Adapted Screenplay, definately.

I don't think UNITED 93 was Oscar worthy at all.

BTW - at this point, of course, nearly all predictions are based on buzz.

I second Ed Harris, and add the young woman who plays his copywriter (Diane Kruger is her name)- she gives a brilliant performance. Also - Perfume is well acted considering it's "Sweeney Todd" like storyline. I also think the film Notorious might get a couple nods.

I haven't seen many movies this year, but my vote goes to Leo for best actor. Am I the only one who remembers the "Titanic" snub? *wipes away tear*

*sigh* michel gondry should be nominated for science of sleep but that won't happen.

that was such an underrated, overlooked gem of a film.

it's so great. it's finally michel gondry breaking free of charlie kaufman to become his own director. it's like his "knives out" video stretched out to 90 minutes....and who said that was a bad thing?

I still hope for Richard Griffiths as a Best Supporting Actor...

In addition, I really wouldn't count out:

Bening and Clayburgh for Running For Scissors
Breslin and Carrell for Little Miss Sunshine
Streep for Prada
Palmer for Akeelah
Gosling and Epps for Half Nelson
United 93 for Best Picture and Director
and a number of acting noms for The Departed

And I am willing to predict now that unless Dreamgirls is The Second Coming, The Departed will win Best Director.

I didn't think UNITED 93 was that good!! It was just like the Lifetime movie...WHY is everyone saying it's an Oscar contender???

Well, if you are following the buzz, it is a contender. Plus, it got stunning reviews. I haven't even seen most of those films. I haven't even seen The Departed. It's ALL about buzz when it comes to predictions.

Best Actress
Cate Blanchett, The Good German
Penelope Cruz, Volver
Helen Mirren, The Queen (she's got this in the bag)
Meryl Streep, The Devil Wears Prada (I have a feeling...)
Kate Winslet, Little Children

I'm hoping for Gretchen Mol to be nominated. With a campaign and some critics awards, it could happen.

I'm not sure about all the Volver noms. It is not one of Almodovar's best. And I expect more noms for Little Miss Sunshine, which was one of the best reviewed films so far this year. I think it will scoop up some Golden Globes as well, though Borat is a shoo-in for the GG for Best Pictures Musical or Comedy unless Dreamgirls is a huge sensation.

I see History Boys, For Your Consideration and Little Miss Sunshine taking ISA's as opposed to Oscars. Although Griffith's could pull out an Oscar nod I think.
