The Academy to General America, concerning 'The Dark Knight' and 'Wall-E': F//K OFF!!! We're going with THE READER!!! The Holocaust Movie!!! And the mediocre Holocaust Movie!!! YAY FOR US!!!
And once again: F//K OFF, AMERICA!!!
WALL-E and THE DARK KNIGHT did not deserve Best Picture nods! (Someone had to say it.)
Since they considered The Reader a leading performance, Kate can only be nominated once in that category (a stupid rule, since it doesn't apply to writers or directors, or anyone else for that matter).
So she got a leading nod for The Reader and not for Rev. Road.
I'm going out on a limb (not a huge one actually) and say now that Benjamin Button will win Best Pic.
It leads the pack this year with 13 nominations and has grossed over $100 million already at the box office.
And that's fine by me. It's my choice for Best Pic this year, regardless.
I agree with you besty. Slumdog is a really only an mediocre picture.
I'm also predicting Winslet and Ledger.
Not calling the actor or supporting actress yet.
besty, why did they stop nominating actors for more than one film? I'm not talking about Jane Gaynor, who won Best Actress the first year for SEVENTH HEAVEN, STREET ANGEL, and SUNRISE, collectively. But Norma Shearer was nominated for both THEIR OWN DESIRE and THE DIVORCEE, respectively, winning for the latter.
I would say Best Actor is between Sean Penn and Mickey Roarke.
Best Supporting Actress ... not sure, but I think Penelope Cruz.
I agree on the actor besty, but I can't guess which one will get it.
I think the edge goes to Rourke b/c Penn already has an Oscar, but I'm not betting on it.
If Button is the sweeper, it's always possible Henson could get it, too.
SM2----They stopped it back in the late '30s I believe. Back when more movies were being made by the big stars in a single year. I think when they added the supporting actress categories in 1936, they also thought there were enough awards for actors.
It's stupid, because a director can be nominated for two movies. So can a writer or composer or art director, etc.
I think they need to get rid of the rule, honestly. It's a hold-over from a bygone era. MGM isn't making 52 movies this year.
Button got 13 noms!
Now that Kate (THE READER) is no longer in the running, I'm gonna go for Crúz (VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA), too. I was not at all impressed by Adams (DOUBT) or Henson (BENJAMIN BUTTON). Viola Davis was the best thing in DOUBT, so that could be her biggest competition. I haven't seen THE WRESTLER, but I don't see Tomei bringing home Oscar.
If they really want to honor Slumdog, they'll give Boyle Best Director and still give the Best Pic to Button.
I really liked Slumdog Millionaire. But it's not a best picture. As charming and "charged" as certain moments are in the film, it's also riddled with implausibilities (particularly in the last half hour) and major holes in the plot and narrative. It still works, but only on a level of (say) Strictly Ballroom, which wasn't a Best Pic (or even nominated) either.
Tomei won't win, but I wish she would.
first off, can't believe Benjamin Button got 13 noms. Not all that brilliant. Two: glad Reader got the last slot in best picture. sad that Walle isn't there though. Three: no Clint Eastwood at all. little surprised. anyone else?
I'm just really glad Tomei got nominated. It's her third nomination now. No flash-in-the-pan, she!
Dre---I disagree about Button completely, but I do wonder what happened to Eastwood for Best Actor!
Tomei won an Oscar for My Cousin Vinny. (not saying she shouldn't have one now, just saying)
Brad Pitt did no acting, Henson deserves the award, screenplay wasn't brilliant, makeup was pretty good (mainly on Blanchett), costumes were really good. and that's about all the main ones. Music was eh, direction not too bad, art direction: no idea.
I am very surprised that Eastwood was overlooked.
Not disappointed, just surprised.
Also, surprised TDK was not nominated for film or director.
Again, not disappointed, just surprised.
can someone explain to me why Tropic Thunder was nominated for something? I thought it was suppose to be a crappy summer blockbuster hit.
I'm shocked but not insulted that you're surprised but not disappointed.
can someone explain to me why Tropic Thunder was nominated for something?
Because Robert Downey, Jr. had a great year.
Other reactions:
/Well, at least Heath Ledger will win THE DARK KNIGHT something.
/Horray for DOUBT's four acting nominations (Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman [YAY!], Viola David, and Amy Adams)!
/Wow, Clint Eastwood didn't get nominated this year. Who knew?
I really liked Slumdog Millionaire. But it's not a best picture. I looked at the film as a fairy tale, which is why the implausibilities didn't bother me. Slumdog affected me more than any other movie this year, certainly more than Button, which, for as much as I wanted to love it, was overlong and didn't add up to a satisfying whole for me. I would give the Oscar to the exhilerating Frost/Nixon or Milk before I'd give it to overcooked Oscar-bait, Button.
In my opinion the biggest, surprise and snub was the exclusion of Bruce Springsteen for Best Original Song. That was a headscratcher.
then nominate him for Iron Man, which I heard is a better film.
A) You didn't see Iron Man.
B) He was brilliant in Tropic Thunder.
I'm very happy about Tomeii's nomination. It's a much deserved nod for her wonderful work in the film.
