Yay Katie!!

The only time I've ever been able to lose that much weight in one week was when I had a bad case of the stomach flu and vomited for like 5 days straight.

Ok--I need advice. I'm a lil concerned:

I have gained the last 5 weeks. Ok--it could be muscle weight. But how much can you gain a week doing 3 days of cardio and 3 days of resistance with 3 pound hand weights?

So, I put a tape measure around my waist to see if that made sense of things. I've gained an inch in the last month or so. Could it be muscle building under fat?

So, my main question aside from the above is should I get a caliper or whatever the heck so I can measure my body fat? That would seem to be what I need to do to assess this IF the muscle is throwing things off.

Now, truth be told, I have gone over in points most of these past 5 weeks as well. I haven't really lost weight in 6 months--just going up and down between around 3 pounds. I am getting frustrated.

Jerby, is it possible that you just don't need to lose anymore? You look good, and with all that it just seems like you "ideal weight" may be where you are.
I have no idea really though.

Congratulations Katie! That is awesome. Weight Watchers of BroadwayWorld Unite

I am way behind on everyone else's stuff, but I know you are all doing well too.

Colleen, there is plenty of room in Stephen's pants. I have no idea what was up with the avatars though.

I stand corrected, you are as vapid as they say.

Not the first time I have heard someone say that after going into my pants. Weight Watchers of BroadwayWorld Unite

Anyway...

Congrats, Kitzy. Great progress in the first week!

The weird gains seem bizarre, Jerby. Is it time to lower your point total gain? I suspect it is that you are adding muscle though.

I hate to say that it doesn't sound like muscle gain there. An inch of muscle is ALOT to gain. And having gone over in points for the past five weeks points in the other direction. Have you changed your exercise routine as well, Jerby? Use this as a means to vary what you've been doing.

Caliper measurements are harder than they may appear. You've got to measure the inner and outer arms, thighs, and above, at and below your waist to get all the correct points in order to calculate the correct amount of muscle/fat mass one has...

jrb_actor, avoid the cyclical trap of frustration leading to over eating. eat less, and exercise more, varying your routine.
don't give in to your body's desire not to lose any more weight (the plateau) by increasing your caloric intake. shock your body by increasing the expenditure of calories to raise your matabolic rate. recommend that you do this in increments, e.g., if you are eating 5 cookies a night, eliminate one per night till you're down to 1 only, all the while increasing your excercise level.

edited to add: you can do it.

I wish it was as simple as late nite cookies. but it's not. I actually eat very routinely-which is why this program has been do easy for me.

the increase is because every week for the past 5 weeks there has been one - two ****ing events that I have had to attend where the routine gets blown to ****. and this week it's out of town guest and gay pride. and next week there are 2 events and then the week after it's july 4th and God knows what else. it's insanity lately.

but I will work it out.

don't work it out, work it off.

gay pride should cause you to watch what you eat, not to be careless with all your hard work so far.

it's not so much a matter of what as it is how much. I don't have that many points to play with so when I get hijacked into things, i'm screwed. it's not that i'm out having the monte cristo and the french fries and the fast food and the coldstones. that is what pisses me off. I am so behaved that when I go just a lil over with basic food and still gain, I get pissed. oh well, God blessed me with a ****ty metabolism.

i'll work it out.

god also blessed you with two things that no other living creature has: the power of will combined with the power of speach. you can say, "no, i've had enough," and mean it. you have demonstrated the determination to get your weight down to where you are now. you have it in you to get you down even further. to go the extra mile, or to add that extra 15 minutes every day of vigorous excercise to your routine. there are very few elements of one's life that is under one's control. what one puts in one's mouth is one of those that is. don't let events (pride, 4th of july, whatever) control your eating habits, train your eating habits to control events. when the going gets tough, the tough get going. you can do it.

This question is probably better suited for a nutritionist, but since I don't even have health insurance right now, that just ain't going to happen.

My regular caloric intake is around 1300 calories, I usually do 30-60 minutes of cardio 5 days a week, and about 30 minutes strength training 3 days a week.

However, Saturdays are big dance days for me. I dance for 2 1/2 straight hours, the first hour is very cardio intense, and the second hour and a half is about an hour strength focused and half hour cardio. After that I head straight to work where I am on my feet for 6 straight hours. Should I be considering taking in more calories on these days? I don't want my metabolism to be bottoming out throughout the day.

Thoughts?

The best thing you can do, if you're not on a planned diet is spread those calories out throughout the day.

Most people who want to keep their calorie intake low eat one or two healthy meals a day, and then skip something (breakfast or lunch). Not good, even if you're watching what you eat. Your body goes into "starvation" mode doing that, and it will hold onto the calories you DO take in for dear life.

You can eat the same amount of food each day, or even a bit more than usual... but "spread it out" so you're having smaller portions, but eating 5 or 6 times a day (like every 2-3 hours), and you'll find you aren't as hungry anymore and your body is being fed continuously. You won't get that dizzy, weak feeling. But you shouldn't have that "one big meal" anymore. Even dinner is a small portion. That will be the key. Your body is constantly processing food that way, and it will help increase your metabolism as a result.

Eat until you're not hungry anymore = Good.
Eat until you're full = Bad.

...And there's a big difference.

But honestly, colleen_lee, it sounds like you're doing very well already!

Colleen--on WW, when you exercise, you earn points for the day. Some people don't count them to try to lose faster. I count them as I NEED them lol.

I just went grocery shopping with my little sister and three of her friends for a birthday party and I'm alive! I would not have been able to do that six months ago.

I'm up like 8 pounds. SO not good.
Turns out almost ALL of it is water weight as a few days on the diet again has already nearly eliminated it.
Thank god.
