I would have no problem imagining Biden as President. Having Palin as President still scares me. And not just because of her ideology.
I thought that while she didn't blow spit bubbles, she came across as a scared cat or some kind of rapid fire, fact spitting automaton. All the press focus on her intensive training worked against her. Every time she answered (particularly when she answered questions that weren't even asked in lieu of ones she'd memorized the answer to) I thought, "wow, they really did a good job of drilling this into her. and she really memorized it well."
I was actually impressed with her coordination of it all.
But the bottom line is I left feeling that she could
repeat an answer. But, if she hadn't been prepped, she wouldn't be able to
give an answer that actually came from her own knowledge and thought process. That's what's still missing.
If you watched her while Biden was taking, you could tell what her response was going to be. She would watch him until he mentioned a word in his answer that was one of her key words and you'd see her smile, suddenly knowing which memorized speechlette she'd drag up.
I think in the end, she reassured her base. Though they didn't need real reassurance of her competence anyway. Just that she wouldn't repeat her Couric debacle. After all, they aren't looking for intelligence, just someone that believes the same things they do. And Palin is the first and only one in this race, since Huckabee that does.
But nobody wins an election with their base. You need the independents. Period. And I think Biden's even tempered, intelligent, informed performance, layed out there next to her's, which, in my opinion, clearly demonstrates that she does not have a cohesive comprehension of our country, the world and its dynamics, is what will bring independents over to Obama's side.
I think this was a good debate for Dems and agree with whomever said that Biden mopped the floor with Palin, at least for the voters that will make a difference in this race.
