"For instance, I know tons of gays his age who don't think we need marriage equality. They're young and aren't thinking about marriage...maybe thinking they'll never want to get married cause playing around in the bar scene is so fun and what it's all about and why would any gay want to get married? They think life will be as it is forever and they'll always be running around the bars having fun...and some of them may."
I just saw this attitude with an actor in one of my recent shows. He couldn't understand why one of his friends who was the same age as him (23) was talking about getting engaged with the guy that he had only been dating nine months. And of course this is an engagement, not saying "we're having our ceremony tomorrow after only dating nine months." This actor said he thinks too many of "the gays" (which he is one of, and is a term I loathe) are just viewing marriage as the next trendy thing, and nobody should be getting married that young, you aren't ready, blah, blah, blah.
I will tell you from my personal experience, I met the man who would become my fiancé right before I turned 24. By the time we had been dating six months I knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life with him. Sadly that did not happen and he is no longer with us due to a drunk driver, which probably made this actor's rant about nobody being ready to be married at that age even more infuriating. To apply your own mentality and life experience (or lack thereof) to everybody around you is just as small minded as those he thought were keeping him down. I told him that if I could get even one more day back with my fiancee where we could be officially engaged here in NY knowing that we could have a real marriage that would at least be recognized in this state I would do anything for that opportunity.
Maybe his friend was making a mistake, but that's part of the fight for equality. We should be able to make the same mistakes that our straight friends and family get to make.
F**K the Uncle Toms in our own community (the author of that article included). Dan Cathy didn't just say he and his company support the view of "traditional" marriage. They put their money where their mouth is! He didn't just express a belief, anybody can say whatever they want, I don't care. But as soon as he donated money to actively deny other people the same rights that he has he lost any support he may have ever had.
