She said ... that who she dates is a very small part of who she is. Here's my thought on that, and I mean no malice to Jersey's friend, or anyone of my friends who feel similarly-
I've always felt that being gay is a huge part of who I am and that who I date is actually a rather small part of my being gay. Why? Perhaps because I was being taunted about being a fag and queer (and every other name) from about second grade on, long before I had any inkling of sexual desire and long LONG before I actually went on a date with a dude. Out of all the taunting or abuse I've received for being gay (and perhaps I'm a rarity, but I've still received a lot, even into adulthood) I was almost never with another gay guy at the time, but I was still defined by homosexuality, and told I was other or wrong or sinful or gross or whatever because of it. Or people just entitled to call me names or threaten my safety because they either saw me sitting at bus stop with my legs crossed or they heard me talking and deiced I had a faggy voice or mannerisms. My entire frigging life.
I get that people don't want to be defined by their sexuality, but the opposition HAS defined me by my sexuality for my entire life and F*CK them. I have no shame in being gay, I think my being gay HAS informed a lot of my personality and some of the best parts of me, and I am happy to being boiled down to my sexuality, since that's what has happened for 30+ years anyway.
I've spent most of my adult life NOT dating anyone, but still being gay (and still apparently pissing of the world at large for it) so with all due respect to those who think otherwise, being gay
is a major part of who I am.
