The 'Blue Tsunami'

"Trump pleaded repeatedly with Republicans to 'pretend, please, that I'm on the ballot.' They didn't. But Democrats did."

I like that quote from Newsweek.

Although I feel a sense of relief, I don't have a feeling of celebration because I have an understanding re: the HUGE amount of restoration that needs to be accomplished, and what a difficult task that is.

I'm keeping in mind that while that task gets underway, the US will still have to deal with Trump's interference and self-serving behaviors. There are still two more years of suffering ahead.

I agree with the Democratic strategy of prioritizing restoration first, retribution later. Still, I'm not looking forward to dealing with my disdain for Trump's administration for two more years ('lame duck', or not).

I know there's currently a lot to be grateful/thankful for, but a true 'payoff' won't be achieved for quite a while, yet.

The 'Blue Tsunami'

Let me wrap it up. The voters of the US showed they did not like high gas prices, tariffs and the war in Iran. They spoke volumes to Republicans in Congress that they got little done and were tired of things like government shutdowns when they were in power. Add to it some Trump fatigue and the storm was building. In addition, the Republicans had some awful candidates, and the perfect example was Darlene Graham of SC. She was given the seat when her brother died (Lindsay Graham) even though she had no qualifications for the job. Other Republicans did not run because Trump wanted her to be the candidate. The voters of SC smartly rejected her at the voting booth; they deserved somebody better to represent them. You know it is a bad night for Republicans when they lose Senate seats in Texas, NC and SC.

Let me add it was also a bad night for VP JD Vance. The magnitude of the loss hurts his chances of becoming the 2028 nominee for POTUS. Republican voters will look to candidates that are not so closely tied to Trump. This helps the possible candidacy of guys like DeSantis and Cruz. Even though Marco Rubio is Trump's Secretary of State, I don't think it will be held against him by voters like JD Vance. Rubio had great reputation in Senate (14 years) and was confirmed by the Senate for Secretary of State with 99-0 vote. By all accounts, he is doing a good job in that position.

What happens next? Well, Trump is a lame duck, and he will get nothing passed by legislation. He will try to get as many things as possible he wants by executive order. Expect most things to get challenged by some federal judge. The Democrats full of glee will try to pass their wish list of dreams and unfortunately for them Trump will be able to veto all or most of it. The main thing they will gain with their new power is stopping Trump from advancing his agenda. The Democrats will also want to do investigations and will we see impeachment #3. If they are smart, they would not go down this road. Most voters want them to make their lives better not trying to lock people up. Sure, there are a bunch of people that want Trump in jail but that is not going to happen.

Going forward, Democrats are well positioned for 2028 and Republicans are floundering. Will Democrats overreach and can Republicans find their way again as a party, we shall see. Socialists made gains and IMO that is scary. Does the US really want to become socialist like Venezuela?

That is all for now .

The 'Blue Tsunami'

The GOP is pure evil.

I hope it never recovers.

Anybody who voted for them in the last six elections should be ashamed of themselves.

The election of the first openly gay US senator, and the first Muslim senator. A moment of celebration. The real America is reclaiming itself.

I think for this moment, we can breathe a sigh of relief and allow ourselves to be happy and grateful. We all know what is ahead - but let us give ourselves this moment

Re: The 'Blue Tsunami'

I doubt we'll see another Trump impeachment. Even Democratic leadership knows it would be nothing more than political theater because they don't have the 67 votes in the Senate to convict. I do think we'll see people like Pete Hegseth impeached - as he should be.

I'm glad the country sent a strong rebuke to MAGA and the Trump administration. However, I've seen a lot of takes this morning that are crediting Zohran Mamdani as being the force that 'inspired the nation' to vote blue. I think that really downplays / ignores a lot of the often-unglamorous grassroots work that people like Stacey Abrams have done in places like Texas and Georgia.

Another do-nothing Obama-style response to winning big cannot be the case again. These people ran on DOING SOMETHING so...you know...do it. Prosecute these bastards and throw every last one of 'em in jail.

Hmmmmm.... I think it's important to be certain of what happened before rebuking so harshly.

I would LOVE to believe that voters cast their votes with "promoting fair treatment and full participation of all individuals, especially those historically marginalized or discriminated against" (DEI) in mind.

However -- It is also a very real possibility that voters simply took a "simplified" path and voted for Democrats across the entire ballot (in a backlash against Republicans/Trump) regardless of racial, religious, gender or LGBTQ representation.

LGBTQ:
Chris Pappas (Democrat)
MUSLIM:
Abdul El-Sayed (Democrat)
BLACK:
Keisha Lance Bottoms (Democrat)
David Crowley (Democrat)
Aaron Ford (Democrat)
Wes Moore (Democrat)
Byron Donalds (Republican)
HISPANIC:
Gina Hinojosa (Democrat)
Xavier Becerra (Democrat)
NATIVE AMERICAN:
Deb Haaland (Democrat)
FEMALE:
Amy Acton (Democrat)

It can't be ruled out that voters might have been more motivated by "backlash" than DEI.

---just askin' to keep that in mind

PS: I think it's important to recognize this list: First Openly Gay US Politicians (note the party affiliations!)

Also, I am mindful that Florida has a reputation for being Florida.

It’s actually not popular with moderates to do the impeachments and investigations. People see it as point scoring and not focusing on problem solving.

Did Jay celebrate that a black man became Governor of Florida. Of course, not because he is Republican. Did Jay celebrate that Georgia elected the first black female Governor in the US? Please describe what real America is to me, just would love to hear your definition. FYI - am a registered Independent because I have thought both parties have sucked for years.

Read the definition of bigot below Jay. Fits your statements in this thread perfectly. (GOP is evil)

Real America is a melting pot of all races, religions, and creeds. Not just the HQ of redneck white supremacist “Christians". I’m happy that our elected institutions better reflect this truth. The stars and stripes have been hijacked by fringe nutjobs who think THEY alone define what America means. No more.

What kind of a monster could take issue with that. Sigh.

Jay was happy at the election of the first openly gay senator and first Muslim senator. You asked him why he didn't celebrate the first black Governor of Florida. You could probably look at each state and pick some ethnicity, religion, or any feature that they have never voted. You could probably find a state that never had an Irish American governor. But why would you want to look at each and every one. He is noting something that has never happened in the Senate. That is noteworthy. It doesn't require him to look to each and every state and find something that might be "the first."

I wonder if anyone else feels this way, but every time I read your posts, it makes me think of yankeefan. Equally annoying.

Re: The 'Blue Tsunami'

I don’t really see much happening over the next two years. Maybe democrats can push for health care subsidies in the budget. The war in Iran is out of their control, removing Hegseth is not going to change a thing when Trump does whatever he wants regardless. So all we’re going to get is investigations that’ll probably end in pardons and a presidential election that is shortly under way.
