LOL
Their BAD movies (and there are some stinkers) are better than today's "GOOD" ones.
At least to me.

"Mamma Mia is better than TDK? By any stretch of any imagination?"
Yes, jerby, it is.
At least I enjoyed Mamma Mia to a large degree.
TDK was an "entertainmnet void."

Well, I'm with the other 96% of the planet who loved it. So, no, I can't see your point. I'm sorry you hated it.
Maybe if Nolan had made it a B&W musical starring Myrna Loy? Or a crappy 2008 film starring Meryl Streep?

Yes, jerby. Maybe that would have helped.
I won't hide behind percentages like you. I'll stand up with my own opinion instead of being snotty.

Besty, my admiration for your taste in movies just grew even more (and I already thought you have an excellent taste in movies).
I honestly couldn't agree more with you, although I didn't necessarily enjoy Maggie Gyllenhall (I just can't stand the actual role).
I was bored out of my mind.
This is exactly what I told my date after we got out of the theatre. And yes, Heath Ledger is the film's only raison d’etre. As I said before, the movie should have been about him. It's a problem when you want the Joke to kill Batman quickly.
I am one of those people who loved MAMMA MIA, at least that movie didn't have one boring moment.

Snotty? No, snotty would be hoping you have to work on the Blu-Ray for the film---hours and hours!! :P

God! If I had a nickel for every lousy movie I had to work on.
I'd be retired by now.
It's just part of being a Hollywood ho'. I just close my eyes and think of the paycheck.
ray---I saw your post on it earlier in this thread. If only I'd read it sooner!!! I might have saved those hours for something better... like cleaning out the cat box or watching the lawn grow.
EDIT: And Maggie wasn't brilliant or anything. She was just an interesting actress in a non-interesting role.

Just do me a favor--when you work on the Mamma Mia BR, could ya re edit it for them? That might help. That and Dominic Cooper in 1080p.

Seen it three times now, and it's still wonderful.
I can't see anyone beating Ledger's performance for the Oscar. He's utterly sensational.

Well, I finally saw it and I must say I was underwhelmed. I just couldn't get caught up in it. To me, it was clearly Chicago, not "Gotham City". The Batman "voice" was irritating to the point of distraction. The tone of the whole film was so rooted in "realism", I felt like the Bat-gadgets and the Joker were simply super-imposed over a contemporary Chicago action flick. It didn't take me into the world of Batman for a single minute. And to top it all off, it was at least half an hour too long. I'm sorry, but I was actually bored. I enjoyed Batman Begins as it was a welcome departure from Schumacher's cheap Six Flags attractions, but other than Ledger's performance, which was brilliant, there was almost nothing I enjoyed about The Dark Knight.
I'm agree with best12bars 100% on this one. I get why it's a huge moneymaker. The film could have been the worst movie ever made and it would still rake in the dough. I just don't get the critical raves.
But then, I also didn't like There's Something About Mary.

I think what you guys may be feeling is a "Too Much Hype" syndrome. It's inevitable for any critically praised film and certainly any film that won the Best Picture Oscar.
Revisit the movie in about a year or two and see if you feel the same way.

Cruel, nearly 3 weeks later and i still cannot get over how boring this movie was. The chance of me ever watching it again, it will never happen!
Wanted was at least a better movie than this, and that is with plot holes you could drive a truck, a train, two planes and 40 fat people through.

Couldn't agree more, Rosscoe. You'd have to pay me (or offer me some other goodies) to make me sit through this movie ever again. It has nothing to do with the hype, I just wanted it to entertain me, period, that's all... needless to say I wish I could have taken a book and a flashlight to read during the whole thing. Ugh.
And okay, I did love Ledger's performance (perhaps because of the big contrast between his outrageous, creepy, great performance and the rest of the dull movie and dull roles) but I think it's way too soon to say that no one could beat him at the Oscars. I even think it's too soon to say that he will get a nod (though I'm sure he will).

Posted: 8/6/08 at 6:51amI have to agree with Ray with respect to Ledger. It IS a good performance, but what's noteworthy is that it's so much better than anything else he's done. Reminiscent of Basinger in LA Confidential, who walked away with an Oscar.

I still don't know why this movie was so "boring." It's not like there wasn't anything going on all the time.
I will say that a lot of the day - players' performances in the ferry scene were kind of laughable but that is to be expected.

Perhaps "boring" is the wrong word. Maybe "monotonous"? Yes, things were happening, but that's not the sole reason a movie is interesting. As much as you claim to know about films, I would think you would identify with that simple fact.
