A $3 tip on a $7.50 meal? I appreciate his need to spread the love around, but if you're on a budget, a 40% tip is rather extravagant.

IMHO, these are IN ORDER OF IMPORTANCE.
Everything else, including triple play cable, TV, Telephone, cell phone, home supplies, entertainment, eating out, movies theatre, gifts, travel, fees, legal......that's ALL XTRA.
If you can pay all your BILLS FIRST, and you have ANY dough left over, I applaud you. Your salary must be well over 75,000, and your rent super low, OR you're in debt like most of us.
Otherwise, I have no sympathy. Over tipping?????? REally???? Drinking and eating out?????? No weekly savings?????

I am also guilty of being one of those ex-servers who over tip because I know most people who under tip or don't tip at all. This isn't the thread, but servers still have to tip out their bussers, bartenders, etc. Also, I always tip cash.
Anyway, I also don't get the roll overs. This isn't 2001 and it isn't Cingular. If you have ten dollars leftover, I think he should add the 15.
That's the part of his "journey" that I have no beef with. I am also a former server and I know it's next to impossible to not overtip for me. When I lived in Chicago I had a delivery guy who once argued with me because he said I tipped too much.
But again, because there's no real endgame in his mind, and because - like we all have said - he gives zero context as to what brought him to $25 and what exactly that $250 is earmarked for.
I mean, if he really wanted to be doing something, he could take that fuzzy leftover every money and put it in a savings account. That's an actual goal. This is just... like a list of how he spends money. And $775 is quite a decent chunk of change for theatre and eating out, even for someone who lives in New York.
And without an endgame point to it all, it ends up being the worst kind of blog, really. It's just him telling us which empanada he had for lunch and how much it costs. I don't even bore people in my real life with crap minutia like that. Is he so self-absorbed that he thinks the world at large gives a fluck about his cheese sandwich?

The thing with the tipping, it seems like from this so far that the extra $2 he wanted to give would not have hurt his budget, the way he is doing it.
I agree that if he put the leftover money into savings or something, that could teach a small lesson. But, this blog really should just be about dining for cheap in NYC. That's all he seems to be doing. And insulting a lot of people with his stereotypes.
