The Healthcare.gov website is horrible!

Obama should be forgiven for lying to the American people about ACA. He should also be forgiven for refusing to negotiate in good faith. His version of given and take is you give & I take. He actually said , with a straight face , that America can spend more money even though we are 15 TRILLION in debt.

You than have Mr Clueless Harry Reid who also said with a straight face that all American want to pay more in taxes but the bad repulicans are stopping it. He was referring to the 51% of those who pay taxes opposed to the 49% of the population who pay not a dime.

Roxy, the 47% who do not pay federal taxes still pay SS and Medicare taxes, sales taxes and real estate taxes. And Obama has been bending over backwards for the Republicans only to run into a brick wall because Republicans have no interest in any negotiations. As usual, you got your facts wrong.

Joe How is this trolling? its a huge story by a huge respected journalist and show

i did answer your question, but i guess since it wasnt the way you liked it it was ignored. I will answer again though

the fact that people got killed is troubling enough, whether under Bush, Lincoln or Obama. the problem here unlike other times is
1) the coverup which like watergate as all my professors say was worse than the crime

In response to the original topic at hand I have a problem with the way ACA has been implemented.

It reeks of disorganization. It's inexcusable.

I think it's wrong that many who already have health care coverage will be losing it only to have to sign up with another insurance carrier and may face higher premiums.

That to me is counter productive.

I thought the whole idea was to give people WHO DID NOT ALREADY HAVE HEALTH INSURANCE COVERAGE the opportunity to obtain it under this new act at an affordable cost.

It's not fair that people who have health insurance coverage and have had it and have been paying for it out of pocket for years are being penalized this way.

It's a disgrace.

Which goes back to my point, Carlos: the intent behind it is admirable (and I support it), but the the guts of it are ugly. It's a poorly formed law and even more poorly executed. Whether it's 10 million Americans or 100 million Americans, no citizen should be forced to explore "new options" in the open marketplace. But, that is why this aspect (along with the individual mandate) is so necessary for the ACA. Without it, only the most needy will sign up with the government's exchange. They need the younger, healthy individuals to enroll too. As they will pay for all of those who need it most. On top of that, it's well documented what the ACA is doing to medical professionals.

I still say the single payer is the way to go, with the government outsourcing its control of the exchange operations to a private entity. Medical professionals will still be negatively impacted by this monumental switch, but at least it will be a universal switch; where *everyone* has to go into the same pool so that there are not "some winners, and some losers" (as stated by the former HHS exchange director)

Doctors are avoiding Obamacare like the plague. There will be more patients seeing fewer doctors.

If Democrats really were serious about reducing costs, they would embrace tort reform. Many doctors do unnecessary tests (known as defensive medicine)to avoid getting sued. These tests drive up insurance rates. Their malpractice insurance rates are astronomical. Reducing frivolous lawsuits will reduce insurance costs but unfortunately the Dems are in the hip pocket of trial lawyers. NYS will not get anywhere near it as Dem politician Sheldon Silver always blocks it. Coincidentally he also works for a personal injury law firm.

Seems to be a bit of a conflict of interest Shelly.

Most people who call for tort reform haven't got the slightest idea what it is or how it could meaningfully affect the cost of anything.

It's just a slogan.

The Healthcare.gov website is horrible!

Did anyone else here get a policy cancelled? I did. Fortunately I have another EXCELLENT policy in place (due to a change in job status), so I am OK for now.

Anyhow, I was able to get into the healthcare.gov website to check out prices in case I eventually do lose my policy. Talk about sticker shock. The website provides estimates for a "silver" policy and my premium would be about double what I currently pay, and my out of pocket costs would be about 4 times my current rate. However, the estimates given are low-ball since they only provide 2 age brackets and they quote based on the lowest age within the bracket, so my actual costs would likely be higher. The rates quoted also include any subsidies for which one might be eligible. This is not so affordable. :-/

Has anyone else (besides Besty) who has a policy that they like been able to do a comparison between your current policy and what is being offered under ACA? I was wondering if anyone else is going through sticker shock.

It took me 10 minutes to sign up last night. I'll have insurance for the first time in years and it's well within my budget.

I went back to the healthcare.gov website and there is a link that leads to a calculator to see if you might qualify for subsidies. That link actually takes you to a Kaiser website where based on your location, income, and age, they calculate estimated subsidies. Unfortunately in my case, should I lose my current policy, my estimated costs for a similar plan will increase dramatically.

Lauren, you mentioned that your current policy came as a result of the change in your job situation. If you are getting this policy through your job, then it's a group policy and your employer pays a part of it. Individual policies are always much more expensive than a group policy.

Thanks for the link, Reg.

My soon-to-be-former carrier (Blue Cross) didn't send a letter saying I would be automatically enrolled in a new plan, and I actually question the legality of that. "Do nothing" does not equal consent to an entirely new contracted policy. I would assume many law suits will follow for them.

Blue Cross did offer me three new ACA policies. They didn't suggest the Healthcare.gov website, but rather their own, direct website. I can't say I blame them for that. They are in a business after all, and other businesses don't give you links to their competition. Still, I don't like the idea that they don't tell you about the tax credit you could get through the government site---but by doing that, they would also open the door for their competitors, since it is a "marketplace" site.

Update on my own situation. I finally got through to the advanced center today. They told me they can't make any changes to my existing application (no editing or deleting) until November 15th, but they would be happy to help me do one or the other then.

So I'm calling back on the 15th now, which leaves me one month until my current plan is cancelled.

By the way, none of these ACA plans kick in until January 1st, or so I'm told via their website. Which means if Blue Cross and other current carriers cancel plans before that date, they are forcing people (like me) into a gap in coverage. I will be uninsured for the last two weeks of the year. Fun stuff.

President Clinton seems to agree with those of us who say The President needs to live up to his promise....
***

Former President Bill Clinton waded into the ongoing controversy over President Barack Obama’s troubled promise that those who like their health insurance can keep it, encouraging the president to uphold that commitment.

“I personally believe, even if it takes a change in the law the president should honor the commitment that the federal government made to those people and let them keep what they got,” Clinton, who Obama once dubbed “Secretary of Explaining Stuff,” said in an interview with OZY Media founder Carlos Watson published Tuesday.

In recent weeks Obama has been frantically trying to extricate himself from that pledge, which has not held up for millions of Americans on low-quality plans who are receiving cancellation notices.

“Now, if you had one of these plans before the Affordable Care Act came into law and you really liked that plan, what we said was you can keep it if it hasn’t changed since the law passed,” Obama told supporters last Monday. But his message had evolved by the end of the week, as mounting pressure from some in his own party led him to apologize to those who feel misled.
