Hah, no. I get it. I'm pretty arbitrary with that sort of thing, anyway. I'll eat products with glycerin and mono- and diglycerides because those can also come from a vegetable-based source. It's all a process of rationalization.

re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, part 13 1/2

It's made from animal collagen.

What's vodka sauce? I assumed one thing, but the meat part through me off. re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, part 13 1/2

It's tomato-based, I think. But much thinner than marinara and the usual pasta sauce.

Maybe I'll e-mail her. I can usually fend for myself well enough, but as I've gotten more adventurous with my food, I've accumulated a bunch of really obscure questions lately.

that's how I rationalize not worrying about rennet in cheese... some rennet is non-animal based.

And animal hooves, ew. Oh well, I just can't give up my frosted cinnamon pop tarts & other gelatin containing foods.

re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, part 13 1/2

Emcee, I'm no expert, but I think that something has changed in McDonald's fries. They don't taste the same to me anymore, but I don't know if it's mental or an actual change in the fries.

Doesn't vodka sauce have cheese in it?
#681

re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, part 13 1/2

Sorry, I edited to correct. Not animal hooves, just animal bones. Um, if that makes it any better. re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, part 13 1/2

Vodka sauce is really a cream sauce, at least in my understanding, but it has tomato, vodka, and usually prosciutto in it. To make it, you make a basic cream sauce, then add vodka and tomato paste.

I'm wondering how to make a non-dairy cream base, although I think they make non-dairy creamers now. You could use that, soy butter, and some flour to thicken it. It does usually have cheese in it too, I don't know if there's any substitute for that, really

Yeah. I feel like if you don't make some rationalizations like that, you might as well be a vegan, because animal products and byproducts are so widespread. I also think purchasing and using products like lotion with animal byproducts is technically on the same level as eating them, but again, I just can't bring myself to sacrifice using my favorite beauty products (and for that matter, wearing leather shoes, etc.). I'm only going to live once, and in that life, I want to use my Hempz lotion. At least the hemp extract is plant-based. re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, part 13 1/2

ETA: Gelatin is actually made from the bones, hooves, skin, and connective tissue a.k.a. collagen (e.g. tendons) of animals.

I'm slowly starting to do more research into which companies practice animal testing, and start weeding those out of my life. I try to be as careful as I can, but I know there are inevitably some that I miss and buy anyway. It even bothered me that they tested that new allergy drug on Edible Enemies on rats, even though it's an important medical advancement.

Gelatin is made of hooves, as far as I know...

re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, part 13 1/2

Yeah, I agree that if you don't draw the line somewhere you might as well be vegan. I'm not the most "pure" vegetarian, as demonstrated by my refusal to give up gelatin. I handle leather/suede in the way that I won't wear jackets or pants or other large items, but I do wear/use leather & suede shoes/purses/etc. It doesn't really make sense, but it's just the personal boundry I've decided upon.

I could drive myself crazy trying to give up more and more non-vegetarian things, but like you said Siamese, i'm only going to live once, and I love my suede boots damnit.

You know, I thought they did taste a little bit different, but figured that with my throat closing, I wasn't the best judge. re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, part 13 1/2 They've been telling me that nothing has changed. Not just recently, but that the fries have never changed, which given very publicly-available information, is a bold-faced lie.

Most of those non-dairy creamers actually do have dairy in them -- ironically, the exact protein to which many people with dairy allergies are allergic to. They were originally created and promoted as "non-dairy" for the sake of people who avoid dairy because of the fat content. There's a substitute for almost anything now, though. The only thing I can't seem to find one for is condensed milk. I met someone over the summer who was a very highly trained chef and knew some people who were food scientists. He said someone like that could probably figure out an alternative, but that for a lot of reasons, it's potentially impossible.

re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, part 13 1/2

I don't bother either. I eat fish, but not other kinds of meat. But there's so much other processed crap in food these days, it would take way more time than I'm willing to dedicate to filter out literally everything that was at one point derived from the death of an animal. I'm sure I've eaten bread that has wheat where the cow pulling the plow dropped dead on the field from heatstroke, but if I did that research for every piece of food I put in my mouth, I'd starve before I found out all the answers.

It even bothered me that they tested that new allergy drug on Edible Enemies on rats, even though it's an important medical advancement.

That bothered me too. re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, part 13 1/2

Emcee, I meant non dairy creamers like the one by Silk. I'm not sure if those contain traces of milk, but I'm fairly sure that they don't.

It's easy to drive yourself crazy with these types of issues. It all comes down to your level of comfort, and how much one is willing to sacrifice. Everyone has a tipping point

re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, part 13 1/2

Really? I'll be the first to admit that I don't know that much about animal testing, other than I know some methods employed really are cruel and probably unnecessary, but I'm completely for it if the product (especially medicines) can't initially be tested on humans and if it can ultimately benefit millions of people. It seems like a fair trade-off to me.
#691

re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, part 13 1/2

Most people I know feel that way. And on an intellectual level, I understand and respect that. But they won't be using this new allergy vaccine, for example, to benefit the rats they're testing it on - so why should they suffer for it?

Emcee - you can actually make a substitute for condensed milk in a few different ways. I've never tried them, though, so I don't know how they'd compare to the real thing.

re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, part 13 1/2

I wonder if they work. The reason you can't really create a "real" substitute is because milk substitues don't naturally separate into "parts" the way milk does. It's primarily an issue with baking, so the concern is that if it's just not constituted the same way, the whole thing won't come out right. I'd be willing to try, though.

And yeah, the Silk non-dairy creamer is really non-dairy. It's one of very few!

#693

re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, part 13 1/2

so why should they be sacrificed for it?

Well, I guess it really all comes down to whether or not one believes that humans are, in some way, on a higher level than animals and thus are entitled to more privileges. I personally do, but I respect the opposing opinion as well.
#694

re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, part 13 1/2

Yeah, baking is tricky. I kind of want to try some vegan recipes and see how they compare. Only because omitting wheat, eggs, and dairy changes the structure of batter so much - I'm curious to see how it tastes.

Those Cherrybrook cake mixes (BEST. CUPCAKES. EVER.) are dairy-free and egg-free. Vegan baked are interesting; sometimes they're REALLY good, but other times they taste sort of like nothing, because of everything that's omitted from them. A lot of the good vegan cookies have a sort of fruity taste to them as opposed to say, chocolate, because of all the fruit juices that are used. They're pretty good, though. I've just recently found a new company that makes some great cookies.

re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, part 13 1/2

There's a vegan restaurant in New Haven that I went to a while ago that had the most amazing baked goods I've ever had. I was kind of worried that the desserts would be lacking flavor and the texture would be weird, but they were so very yummy.

re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, part 13 1/2

I've always thought that sweets would be the trickiest things to do vegan... I don't think I ever would go vegan, but I'd be interested to try some vegan desserts, for curiosity sake.

While I wouldn't give up dairy & eggs, I would love to only buy local/free range milk & eggs. I'll probably do it when I'm living on my own, but I know that it's generally more expensive, so that could be an issue.

re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, part 13 1/2

My problem with animal testing is the fact that too often, it's unnecessarily done out of laziness, rather than a concern for protecting humans. Medications are one thing, but what about make-up? They test their products on animals because it's cheaper, easier and less regulated than testing on humans. Emcee's lab mouse is bred to be taught for a semester, then killed because they can't see any further purpose for them. These aren't toys, these are living beings. I don't even like mice, but much like dissection in biology classes, there's something messed up about breeding animals for the sole purpose of killing them so kids across America can do something that could have been just as easily taught by a computer program.

re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, part 13 1/2

With regards to all things non-medicine, I'd personally judge it on a case-by-case basis. I don't have a problem with animal testing if they're testing a new ingredient in something and/or the company has reason to believe there's even a slim chance their new product might cause a severe reaction, but from the little I've read, a lot of animal testing is performed unnecessarily. Of course, it's difficult to judge on a case-by-case basis if the consumers aren't fully aware of all the information surrounding a product, and if you feel strongly about the issue, it's probably easier to make more of a general anti-testing statement. However, as a general rule, I do have a major problem with animal dissections in schools on principle, and I think teachers saying that those who object can do an alternate assignment is such a cop-out. Like any middle- or high-school kid is going to want to be the one outcast.

I want to take my lab buddy home. re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, part 13 1/2 The rats we're using basically exist so that we can see the processes we're studying in class. The experiments we're doing with them show things that were proven a century ago -- these rats aren't bred for new research, or research that will yield answers to any of our important questions. The ONLY exist so we can use them for our own purposes -- and that's the case with a lot of reseach animals, I suppose, but the fact that this isn't a necessary purpose makes me sad.
