The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, part three

I feel bad for the guy if he was hurt by something he read, especially since people on these boards are overly nasty and cynical at times, but unfortunately I think unflattering comments are made about every performer, especially those who happen to be better known. It's inevitable, I think. If he feels discouraged by reading stuff like that online (and really, who wouldn't?), it's best that he just stays away from boards like these. I remember Idina mentioning something to the same extent in one of the video blogs, too.

Certainly he and probably most performers should stay away. I wonder if he was blind-sided, as Anthony put it. I would imagine he got a lot of good feedback from initial screenings, partly because that's what happens a lot in Hollywood but partly because he actually did do a good job. The negative reactions might have come as quite a shock.

I've thought a lot about his performance in the movie. I still feel he did an excellent job - he was subtle for a lot of it, yet Roger as a character was very clear. But it wasn't the same Roger that a lot of people expected, for one thing, and I also think that Mark and Roger were slighted a bit in the editing. Roger is on stage during most of the show, even during scenes that he's not a part of, which makes him very central. That centrality was not reproduced in the movie, and I think Mark and Roger both suffered from the cuts, no matter how justified that may be in the grand scheme of things.

I was confused by the fact that Roger went from being the lead in the stage version to a backround character in the movie.

I agree. I always thought that ROGER was the supposed 'main character,' I guess. Roger's story through Mark's lense, with Mimi as the leading lady, Mark as another leading character, and the rest being a part of an ensemble of supporting characters. I thought this should have been fleshed out in the movie, but sadly, the cuts didn't work that way.

But that's really my opinion...

Oh well. I still love the movie, and I think Adam did a fabulous job with what he had.

Caught Jose Llana, Jeffrey Carlson and Phillip Bosco. Cute movie.

I've always felt that Mark is the... conventional lead, and considered Roger to be more of the romantic lead, sort of. I don't know that I felt his part was smaller in the movie, but I felt like you saw him less on film than you do on stage. I mean, other than the Mark/Roger fight, he didn't have any scenes removed to diminish his presence in the story. I think they were all treated a little bit more equally in the movie than they were on stage, actually. While there are three clear "main" parts, and I don't know where I'd place Benny, I felt like the distribution of screen time was fairly equal. I'm not sure why I felt that, honestly.

Hm, I thought Roger came across as the co-lead in the film (or at least every bit as much as he does onstage). The cuts didn't help, but they hurt Mark as well.

Looks like wrq left, but I hope you love Brokeback. I'm sure you've read how much it's gotten under my skin.

PS, I told my mom who Jeffrey was and she thought he was ugly. 5...4...3...Open Sesame! He came on screen and I cracked up. Hello, maturity.

I agree that the screen time was fairly equal, but that puts a character as shut down as Roger at a disadvantage. Here's what I would have possibly changed: include the information that April committed suicide and that love scene between them; cut to him when he comes in on "Because reason says...;" include one shot of him alone during "Without You."

I agree that a shot of Roger alone in Without You would've been useful.

And yeah, Elphie. I was like "he's cuter than that, I swear!" Anyway, it was a good break in the sickening, head-spinning thoughts I've been having all day.

Nia, I know you aren't here, but I almost rented Gone With the Wind today. I saw it and I thought of you. I hope you're feeling a little better and that tonight is less wacky.

I think that they not only should have included the Mark and Roger fight, but definitely shown that April killed herself. I think that them showing that he was with her when she found out that she was HIV positive and implying that she died of aids is definitely less powerful. That is such a pivotal moment for the character, even though you dont see it. I mean, it destroyed him. He comes home to find out all at once that only is his girlfriend dead, but he will die too. I don't know, that just bugged me that they changed how he found out about having aids. I think that the cuts took away from Roger and Mark's characters, and having those scenes in would have helped.

Something interesting about the suicide scene that my friend was told by Mackenzie Firgens: apparently it was in that very deep bathtub where Mimi is sitting when Roger finds her shivering during Without You. It was supposed to create some sort of parallel for him.

I didn't know that. Thats interesting, but it doesn't work unless you show that April had died of suicide. Im sure that anyone who didn't know the backstory assumed that she died of aids.

Wow, that's pretty interesting about the suicide scene. That would have definitely added quite a lot to the movie had it stayed in.

I'm thinking that the filmmakers became concerned about too much melodrama, especially so early in the film. Seeing someone with her wrists slit is quite different from hearing about it. Still, it would have been good to work it in somehow.

Even if they couldn't have the scene (too melodramatic, needed PG-13 rating, etc.), simply mentioning how April really died would have added a great deal to the depth of Roger's character. Anywho, I feel silly getting frustrated about this so long after the fact.

I think Chloe hit the nail on the head with Roger- since he's not a very noisy character, you're not going to notice him as much even if he's got the same amount of screen time as, say, Maureen. I felt like the movie lacked focus.

Poor Adam, someone decided that it would be "funny" to post that he died on a Rent LJ community.

I wish you were kidding, SD. Wow.

Nia, I agree. Even though it's stagey, I think something was lacking in not having him be more present throughout.

Oh... it was on the rent_the_movie community and said something like, "It just said on the news that Adam Pascal just died."

Freaky. Oh, and for anyone who's just scrolling through this thread... NO, he's not dead. Heh.
