"What's the big moral dilemma? So people are making more money off them. So what?"
The big deal was Gibson's insistence on the one gorey version being released exactly as it was with no cuts and his uncompromising position on the matter under the instruction of Jesus. Now that he made a mint off it, he'll chop up the film however anyone wants to see it just for a buck.
Yeah, I should have been more clear: I'm not sure why people would have a problem with Spielberg or Lucas rereleasing their flicks.
I see the possible debate regarding 'The Passion.'

Having read all these posts, it escapes me what's at issue here. When did the film BUSINESS become something other than a business?????? Mel Gibson marketed a film idea to every single Hollywood studio and producer. Everyone of them told him to go the hell. He took $30 million of his own money to make a film. An enormous gamble. Why shouldn't he make every single cent that somebody is willing to spend? Why?
Remember when they used to show SOUND OF MUSIC every Easter?
My, how times have changed.

What's the big deal? You don't like the movie, don't go see it.

Well, what would Jesus do with all that money?!? Keep it? I think not.
I read that one of the differences in "Recut" will be showing Jesus' face as he is scourged rather than the scourging itself. Incidentally, "Recut" still received an "R" rating after the initial recutting.
Talk about exploiting Jesus' death. There's a place in hell for Mel.
I am firmly against piracy and a staunch defender of the rights of copyright owners, but I bought a bootleg copy of The Passion from one of those guys on Canal Street.
I still haven't watched it, but I know that, when I do, not a penny of my money is going into Mel Gibson's pocket.
Kudos to PalJoey...That's exactly how i purchase Eminem cd's

I don't have a clue what that has to do with anyting. It doesn't even make any sense. What does what Jesus would do with money have to do with somebody who made a movie? But never mind that, tell me what you know about HEALING THE CHILDREN? Go on. My guess is that you know nothing about it, or the millions that Mel Gibson has contributed to it, nor do you know anything about him or his charitable works; and that's because a person who is truly being charitable, doesn't have a press agent informing the world about it.
You are right Feodor; I was unaware of "Healing the Children" and Mel Gibson's financial involvement with it. Thank you for bringing it to my attention.
My point was that earning hundreds of millions of dollars primarily for one's personal gain from a film about Jesus hardly seems to be a Biblically-based spiritual practice. When that film is intended to be a historically and Biblically accurate account of events, it seems even less so. It is my understanding that Mel Gibson is a billionaire. Ten million dollars is far less than a Biblically described tithe on the the money that Mel Gibson has made off of this film.
Incidentally, as for its historical accuracy, scholars are mostly in agreement that Jesus was nailed through the wrists not the hand as depicted in the film, or at least the advertisements. (I did not see the film.) From what I understand, it is also believed that the cross used was a "Tau Cross."

I agree with you shamrockboy!!! I've always found Mel Gibson to be a bit of a bore, in films. Frankly, I hope he just goes off somewhere and spends his money, quietly. I thought THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST was a well-crafted film, but lacked any real engaging narrative, for me. Millions loved it. But there are plenty of films that millions loved that I didn't. I don't begrudge their success. I still don't get the outrage over this one. I was more outraged at MY FAIR LADY and ANNIE!!
Does this mean that the original version will now be known as "Bigger, Longer and Uncut?"
