What's up with this? I thought the original release was Mel Gibson's ultimate vision. Now it's being rereleased for a "new audience"? DVD sales not what you expected, Mel? I thought the whole point of the film was his unflappable conviction to keeping the film as it was.

Frankly he's just taking a page from the George Lucas/Steven Spielberg Handbook, sell it to em, and then sell it to em again. Truthfully, you can knock that movie for all sorts of legitimate reasons, but the numbers of dollars it has brought in is simply not one of them.
My question is, without every single frame that Mel put in the original release, is it still exactly as it was written in the Bible? I know Mel said The Holy Ghost was his co-director, does this mean She'll want her credit removed from the new print?
I didn't see it the first time, and I don't plan to see it now.
I'm sure Mel is just joking around, resurrecting the film in time for Easter. It sure does say a lot about his committment to his magnificent opus. Is this the kinder-gentler-yet-still-amazingly-accurate depiction? Or just dubbed in English? At least George Lucas/Steven Spielberg put a few years between releases.
He just wants more money. He's a bastard.

Oh please, time does not lessen the Spielberg/Lucas hucksterism. And any idiot Star Wars fan who has been complaining that the first trilogy didn't include the "original" release and really believes that Lucas will NEVER allow it to be seen again just hasn't learned a thing in the last 25+ years. Once you've all bought the first DVD version, he'll release the "original" by "popular demand."
Apparently they (meaning Christian groups) want him to re-release it every year around Easter. And he's considering it.
I just think that "The Passion Recut" is an interesting choice of title. They could just say "reflogged" if they really wanted to.

I don't think DVD sales was an issue for this film.
Spielberg didn't make a dime off of SCHINDLER's success - he donated it all. You know damn well that Gibson is pocketing everything.

Actually, I don't know that damn well, munk, and how do you know that? Perhaps he is donating it to his wacked out extreme Catholic sect. Or maybe even to a charity that helps people "with the frame of an AIDS patient."
And Spielberg may have donated his Schindler's money, but what about the "Special Edition" of Close Encounters. Sell it to 'em, and sell it to 'em again.

Who cares what he did with the money, he can do whatever the hell he wants with it.
My friend sent me an article on it. I'm not talking about CLOSE ENCOUNTERS, I'm talking about reigious movies like SCHINDLER and PASSION - both grossing insane amounts of money. Speilberg donated all the the profits to different places, but it is reported that Gibson kept all of it. If he had donated some, it would be in the news. That's all I'm saying, no need to get testy.
This is another (un-necessary) attempt on Mel Gibson's part to make money off of a story everyone knows. Once was enough.
What, didn't he make enough money the first time around?

You guys realize the movie has been substantially edited for this release, right? It's not just another release of the same exact thing.
How much more do we actually need to see. I thought the first one more then captured what happened to Jesus. How much more beating and killing do we need to see?

That's the whole thing. Apparently a lot of people wanted to see it but chose not to due to all the gore. Now it's being re-released with a lot of it cut out.

People complained (surprise, surprise) that it was too gorey and so that's why Mel's reissuing. I went to a private college and when we examined the Easter text, we also studied the history of crucifixion, and it was really disturbing... I can't even begin to imagine how your body affixiates itself!! Heavy stuff!!
Who doesn't want to see more blood and guts flying? An extra 20 minutes of blessed violence!
I just read that he is putting in the cut musical numbers. All for the Best and Could We Start Again, Please are only two of them.
I heard that as well. The finale is going to be just spectacular - right as they hoist Jesus and the crucifix into the full upright position, DEFYING GRAVITY will play. Jesus will sing most of it, and it's supposed to be one of the most asounting closings of a film since GIGLI.
Who cares if people re-release movies? There are a ton of movies I'd love to see on the big screen with professional sound, rather than on a TV set.
What's the big moral dilemma? So people are making more money off them. So what?

The only way I'd see it is if the "re-cut" version spliced in Eric Idle on the cross next door, singing "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life"!
