What is it with latecomers to STP? When I went to a matinee in November, someone came in 15 minutes late and was seated during the performance in the center of the first row. Jeremy Piven mentioned it in his BC/EFA speech!
Why can't ushers refuse to open the theater doors for the latecomers until there's an appropriate pause in the production? Why are the latecomers (regardless of the theater or show) just allowed to wander in after the show has started? Anywhere?
A lot of shows DO have strict rules, and will only seat latecomers up until, or after a certain point, depending on when there's an appropriate pause. When Sweeney was running, latecomers weren't seated until forty minutes into the production, because that was the first applause break -- after Johanna.
Well, phooey on the Barrymore for allowing this to happen. It's hardly the first time during the run of STP, either, as has been noted.
The lack of personal accountability and the inability to take responsibility for your actions these days (ie., wait in the lobby until there's a break, if you can't be bothered to get to the theater on time) is something I find utterly appalling. Sorry if that sounds too strong, but it's a real hot button with me.
ETA: yes, I know some people are legitimately, unavoidably delayed, but far too many people just can't be bothered to plan ahead and show up reasonably in advance of the curtain going up.

They aren't. Not every show is as strict as Sweeney was, but the ushers don't just let someone walk in to take their seats whenever they wish. Latecomers are always escorted to their row by an usher at what the theatre has deemed an appropriate time.

It's not just the Barrymore. This problem doesn't just plague the shows Raul is in. Most shows aren't as strict about late seating as the O'Neill was for Sweeney. That was an extreme case because of the nature of the production, but I'd be willing to bet even the O'Neill isn't as strict now as it was then.
This has always been my favorite of the old Christmas carols, but Raúl just kicked up my love for it to new heights. From the ASTEP benefit at the Zipper Factory last night: O Holy Night/Noche Sagrada
If I could find an emphatic enough term for the levels of sexy, I would feel very accomplished. Alas, I cannot. But yeah, hot hot hot. I thought he sounded great, and not in a "especially for not having sung recently" kind of way. The concert was really wonderful overall... so many talented people all coming together for such an incredible cause was really awesome. Those not familiar with ASTEP should check it out, and consider supporting it in some way. The work they do is pretty incredible.
It seems that Sirius/XM is less than truthful in their advertising. They SAY that the Live on Broadway show is broadcast live from the Broadway Concierge every Wednesday at noon.
Well, it's not. Broadcast live, that is. Raúl was Seth's guest today, but instead of that live broadcast, we got a repeat of a show Seth did about "Annie".
I'm really bummed at missing this. I have to assume that EVENTUALLY it will get aired, but I can't find anything on Sirius' website to indicate when that might happen.
Did anybody go to the actual show? Can you report on what was talked about/sung?
It was a cute little interview, mainly telling stories we've heard before, like the storming off the stage during Taboo rehearsals and some stuff about tick...tick...BOOM! I got a little bit of video which I'll be uploading on YT later, which includes a funny little bit about Sondheim. Unfortunately my camera crapped out on me before he started singing, however, from where I was sitting (in the front row directly in front of the piano, meaning three feet from him as he sang) it probably would've just been a shot up his nose. Not cute.
He sang "Being Alive" and Seth convinced him to sing "Soliloquy", which as we all remember he sang at the Philharmonic concert. He sang both beautifully, but looked at the words over Seth's shoulder. "I'm so sorry I can't really perform this for you guys, because I need to look at the words!"
It was a fun little event, I'm glad I saw it :)
Face life with a little guts and lots of *glitter*
Well, if you're a cynic, I'm doubly so. I have to give them some credit, though - that's a rather original excuse. Mercury poisoning. I guess he got hold of some contaminated coke.
This could be a good thing in the long run. It'll create even MORE interest for the show, and it was already doing well in ticket sales. If they get a big name in, lots of people will come to see out of curiosity. And maybe there might be a chance to extend beyond Feb. 22nd!
