Awwww...NYU edited her above response. Now my post doesn't make any sense. So...I'll have to tell you all what she said. Something about jrb's signature line saying it all. And here's my response:

Actually, it does.

Why does anyone care?

In any way, shape or form.

Hell...even the government did a study that claims gay marriage would create revenue for the government.

Where's the drawback?

The drawback, Robbiej, is that there's a vast tract of America out there who believe that giving rights to people with whom they disagree is the same as losing their own rights. so, with "compassion," they decry these rights as being morally outrageous and wrong and somehow manage to sleep at night, convinced that by conceiving an atmosphere of hate and mistrust in this society that they are somehow bettering it.

"Kerry believes we should work with our European allies to fight the war on terrorism. If we wait around for our allies to join us, there won't be a USA."

We don't have allies anymore. Bush thumbed his nose at the UN and basically said "f**k you" to any former allies who didn't sign on to his impulsive raid on the wrong country. When questions were asked, or reluctance displayed to sign on the Attack Iraq agenda, things got ugly and insults were hurled. (Anyone remember the movement to rename the French Fry?...and even on the Congressional level...) Now that it's become increasingly apparent just how ill-advised the Iraqi invasion was, no one is jumping in line to help clean up the mess and foot the bill. Huge surprise there.

*******

"There is no way Bush will make you getting married illegal even in the next 4 years. To me the entire issue seems to be about name calling. Someone who is gay obviously wants to get married, so they will argue with anyone who has an opposing view."

I think you are missing the point here,...it's not so much about WANTING to get married as it is about being able to CHOOSE to get married; to be able to participate in basic codified human bonding that has economic and legal protection for committed partners. For sure, this country has talked a good line about the separation of church and state, but it has consistently overlooked the minor contradictions and blurry edges where, for the most part, the "God" references were kept vague and inclusive in that they could refer to almost anyone's version of god. The terrifying change that has occurred over the past four years is that the concept of god, and the specific religious beliefs of a particular, and very conservative and zealous subgroup of Christians, are now influencing government policy....to the point of possibly altering the Constitution. The willingness of the Bush administration to restrict parity of rights to various groups based on the religious beliefs of those in power is an absolute violation of the principle of separation of church and state, and they are eroding the basic doctrines upon which this country was founded...with every click of the clock. It's time for them to go before irreparable damage has been done.

Ya know...I was spending a quiet evening watching The Capital Gang on CNN...and a couple of things made me think of PrincessMimi, NYU, and others who are parroting the Republican Party mantra of how we will be less safe if Kerry is elected. The question came up about how a terrorist attack between now and Election Day would almost certainly assure a Bush victory, and wouldn't the terrorists prefer that Kerry was in power? The answer was that it is apparent from reading militant Islamic sites, that they (the terrorists) would prefer to have Bush in power because he is so focused on Iraq that it takes pressure off elsewhere. The same is said for the alienation Bush's policies and attitude has cause with other countries. The splinting and lack of cooperation that has blossomed under Bush's watch, has created an environment favorable for the recruitment and energization of a new generation of anti-US terrorists.

So although we keep hearing how the only way to stay safe is to stick with Bush...that is really only being said by the Bush people. Hammering it home, over and over and over, as if saying it enough will make it true....

...or a Republican, as it were. You may not be registered as one, darlin', but you clearly have aligned yourself with their rhetoric.

Edited so that my reply to NYU makes sense, since once again she totally changed her statement. But the gist of it was that I need to get a life instead of judging what people post on a message board. (I should have known enough to cut and paste your statement.) So to that I replied:

Not for nothing, but you are the last person who should have the nerve to make that little statement. I have read your posts for months...I'm not making my assertions based on one comment...but rather on an entire body of "work". For instance, I'm thinking of your rather strong and harsh judgements levied against Puerto Rican women, and "trannies", as you so affectionately referred to them. And then there was your distaste for homosexual practices...the last time this came up, I did a search of your posts just to make sure I am on solid ground on this one...and I am.

When you post on a message board, you are putting what you say out there for critique and comment....much more so than the various people attempting to live their lives who periodically meet with your disapproval. So pathetic as my life may seem to you, this is how I choose to spend my Saturday evening and I'm okay with it. I defend your right to say anything you want to say. But I also defend my right to call you on it.

You're right, NYU, I do care too much. I care that we invaded the wrong country and I care that people are dying in the process. I care that that assh*le in office let the Assault Ban Treaty expire (despite his 2000 campaign promise...and oft repeated promises...to renew it...) and come Monday, any lunatic or terrorist will have no problem buying a Uzi. I care that 2/3 of the people on this board (well, ok....I have no idea what percent...) or at least a significant portion of them can't marry the person of their choice. Let's see, I care a whole lot that people are living in poverty and can't afford healthcare, and yes, I care that if the current administration has its way, women will no longer have the right to choose whether to become a mother.

I have a fine life, thanks. I'm just trying to hang onto it...and would be much happier if others had the same rights that I enjoy.

Such a profound retort as always, nyu.

I also find this whole "if there is an attack, Bush will win" stuff to be very ironic. Bush is running on the notion that he protects us from terrorism. Cheney says (and I know he TRIED to take this back--but not very well) that electing Kerry will cause a terrorist attack. So, how will another attack on Bush's watch help him? It's very confusing logic.

Because the prospects of another 4 years of the status quo is too much to bear.

Because no one should have their rights taken away from them, enshrined in the document that is supposed to guarentee all of our rights.

Because we're fed up with people who don't piece together coherent arguments to defend their point of view, or at least concede that the opposing side has a point in what they are saying.

That, and so much more is the reason why we're bitchy.
