There was an article in my local newspaper about a family from my area going to the NYC Soho bakery to get them once a month. After reading what they do, is it really worth it? I know I like some of my own foods from NYC, but I couldn't imagine getting up to leave the house just to drive to get them and then go home. Then again, I also wouldn't be willing to drive into the city.

This just makes me feel bad for them. There are plenty of knock offs around the NYC area... Why not just settle for that?

For the same reason that some people don't settle for knock-off handbags that are all around the NYC area?
If somebody wants to go stand in line for something (and end up spending some time with his kids in the process) that's not for me to judge. Those people standing in line for something like that could ask the same question of those who spend their entire mornings in line for rush and SRO tickets.

The difference being that you *can* purchase a cronut elsewhere but you cannot rush a Broadway show except, well, on Broadway. True that it wouldn't be the original cronut but this pastry is being duplicated without effort all over the country and soon enough someone will figure out the original secret recipe. I'm not "judging." I'm simply reacting to the article and giving my opinion.

I just thought it was interesting too. I guess my other feeling is when waiting for tickets, you are going to be doing something else instead of just buying something and leaving. Maybe I just can't believe it because if I've ever had an obligation in the city that only lasted 30 minutes or so, I would find something else to do to make the commute more worth it for me.

I don't think so. My friend has conversations with the owner of the cronut place. He has the patent, and no knockoffs are allowed. Actually, I believe it. I was in Whole Foods one time, and they had some free samples of something like cut-up pieces of cake on the counter. I took one. FABULOUS! I asked what they were and the girl said it was their version of a cronut. Since that day, they no longer have them. They probably were told to stop with the knock offs. If anyone knows where there ARE knock offs in nYC, I'd like to know, because there's no way I'm getting up at the crack of dawn and going into Soho to stand in line for a donut

I don't know how they compare but the Crumbs Bake Shop has the Crumbnut which is their knock-off. Crumbs has a couple of locations around town.
If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

Blaxx, they are wonderful and fantastic. Not the best thing ever, but up there. You can reserve them online, but you have to be on that website at exactly 11am, they usually sell out for the next two weeks in under five minutes. Good luck!

I tried the crumbnut and it was maybe the most overrated piece of eating finery since the McRib.

thanks for the warning Borstal, as I was thinking of trying one of those.
Last week I had a donut I bought at Citarella. It may have been a cronut knock off but I don't know, as I never had a cronut. But it was good- a square shaped glazed on the outside and crispy, with peanut butter and jelly on the inside. Recommended if anyone lives near a Citarella.

At any local bakery or fresh market, Jane.... I get boxes of knock-offs at a local bakery here on the UES every Sunday morning. Very delicious. And cheaper than the real ones, too!

Glad to hear the crumbnut doesn't resemble the real thing. I live across the street from a Crumbs and finally tried one, and was so underwhelmed. But if I'm going to wait in line at 7 am, I better be getting a killer deal on some theater tickets, not an increase in my HDL.

really? My friend and I are constantly on the lookout for them but never find them. Hard to believe, but in our neighborhood, west village, there's a dearth of bakeries. I'll have to stick to Citarella for the time being.

Wow - they are still, months later, still popular?
I used to watch Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.
A few times I had the opportunity to be at restaurants that were showcased. I ordered the "OMG" food featured on the programs and guess what...it was far from "OMG". It was merely ok and unworthy of the applause, rants and raves.

ok, just did my errands. Must have gone into 9 different places which carry any bakery items. Not one knock off. Ended up back in Citarella for the peanut butter and jelly one.
