Hey, world - here I am!
As I posted last night we did lose power around 11pm. The lights came on after 4am and I was still awake. It was hard to get any sleep with no AC and being a little worried over what comes next. Once the power came back I was able to relax enough to fall asleep.
No real damage to report here - no flooding or loss of trees. Lost some branches but that's fairly minor. The grill didn't even get blown over (though I did block in it with the iron picnic chairs)
I peek out the front window just a bit ago and found a rabbit taking refuge in one of our bushes. Pleased to help the little guy.
I know a lot of people who did not take any of this seriously and others who feel let down. While my family came out unscathed I know there are people who have not. Rather than think about me I'm thinking about them.
Obviously there was more damage to livers last night than anything else.

HAS ANYONE HEARD ANYTHING FROM BILLY'S BAKERY?
The posts here are public domain, right? I'm planning on compiling them into a one-man show called DESPERATE CRIES: THE VOICES OF IRENE, directed by Eve Ensler.
Not sure if this got posted yet.
I love how the reporter comes close to losing it but doesn't. Give that guy a regional Emmy :)

Really?!
It's twue!

I was unfriended during the hurricane by someone from here!
The media were so redundantly over the top about all this. If I never see another correspondent standing in a foot-deep puddle of water like they have no where else to go it will be too soon.
By this morning, the reporters weren't even trying to mask their boredom with it all.

A wine and beer party broke out with my neighbors on the steps outside last night. Ugh!
But we made it through here in Jersey (Just over the Hudson). Some flooding as we are by a bay and only one tree down. Cable went out so we had no internet, tv or phone (Comcast package). It finally came back about 2 hours ago. But the electric didn't go out, thank God.
A friend posted that Jersey was soaked. I said that it needed a bath...

So living on the Mohawk River, they're now worried about a dam breaking that could cause MASSIVE flooding. The power went out around 7:30, and the neighborhood was pitch black. Cops were driving around asking us to remove our cars from the street. Decided to evacuate ourselves in case the water comes all the way up. Here's hoping for the best tomorrow morning, as we're preparing for the worst!
My parents were able to get back into their house at around 1:00 PM yesterday. They live on Long Beach Island, which was predicted to be one of the areas that would get hit hardest. The verdict: absolutely nothing. There was some street flooding, but this is a barrier island in New Jersey; the streets flood in some areas flood after a normal heavy rain. It turns out that they never even lost power and could have easily ridden the storm out with the lights on and the AC going, had our fearmongering governor not shut down their only safety route thirty hours before the actual storm was set to hit. Many restaurants, businesses, and groceries were open yesterday; all are expected to reopen today.
My thoughts go to the people in the areas that were actually affected.
Thanks!
