Most East Coasters experienced their first Earthquake on Tuesday, and now we all sit in anticipation for Hurricane Irene which will hit the New York area Saturday as a Category 1 storm. Any thoughts/survival tactics folks want to share.

I live in Connecticut and as of now it looks like we are gonna get 100 mile per hour winds and maybe a foot of rain. I dread it. 20 years ago (August 20,1991)we got hit with Hurricane Bob.Even though this has been down graded to a level 1 I still dread this weekend!
I'm a little scared because people are telling me to batten down the hatches but I have no battens or hatches. Very worrisome.
In all seriousness my plan is to bring in the outdoor furniture and just stay inside all day. I'll check the cubbards tonight and maybe do a little grocery shopping.
I've been thinking that a movie marathan is called for this weekend. Does anyone know if Category 6 or Category 7 are available on Netflix instant viewing? I recently re-discovered "Young Indiana Jones Chronicles" on Netflix instant viewing. I'll probably spend the weekend with Sean Patrick Flannery.
If you have electricity. Why does this have to happen when it will affect Sunday night. That's when all my stories are on!
My mother and I were trying to decide if we want to eat all kinds of trashy food for dinner on Sunday or celebrate the hurricane in style with a roasted leg of lamb. I'm pulling for the lamb myself.
Otherwise we're just doing what Eris is doing: bringing in all outdoor furniture and pool accoutrements. And hoping our neighbors' tree doesn't come crashing down into our pool.
We're near the East River, and NYC's "danger zone" map puts us in the middle category of danger.
Eris, keep an eye out for a young Alec Mapa as Ho Chi Minh (I'm not kidding) in the Paris episode with T.E. Lawrence.
If you have electricity.
My back up plan is to have my ereader and my ipod fully charged.
When my electricity went out last week I sat in my car and charged everything.

I'm scheduled to be flying home on Sunday evening. I have a feeling I may be spending an extra night in Memphis.
My parents live on the NJ shore and I'll be visiting them this weekend. We'll be taking the necessary precautions (securing the outside furniture, stocking up on essentials, etc), but we're not going too far unless it seems we absolutely have to. The shore seems to get a hurricane warning twice a year, and it usually ends up being a moderately bad rainstorm.
Surprisingly, I'm not nervous. I was supposed to go to a local lake on Sunday for a party, but I doubt that is happening now.
Battening down the hatches at our shore house...and snuggling in for the storm. This is our last weekend before vacation, so it'd be nice to be able to get some stuff done.
I better get to the liquor store!!
Unfortunately, we still have water in the basement from Sunday's rain...so hoping this one keeps a distance.

Always my first thought in a situation like this! I stocked up before the blizzard this winter and am sure glad I did.
I grew up on the Gulf coast of Florida, so I'm sort of calm about the whole thing.
I actually, perversely enough, enjoyed being trapped inside when hurricanes or tropical storms hit. My younger self found it sort of exciting. And then going out after it passes, and seeing the downed trees but no one around. It was sort of cool.
But then again, I'm weird.
I lived in Miami for 11 years and lived through my fair share of hurricanes. When I moved back up north I figured that for the most part I was done with them. Boy was I wrong! Just my luck!
I'm not nervous but I also know if I don't prepare for it something will happen and I'll be sorry.
My biggest preparation will be to take out all of the window air conditioners. I just got back in town from being away all summer, so food shopping needs to happen anyway.
So Carlos what you're saying is ... this is your fault.
Nevermind.
I live a block from the ocean on the south shore of Long Island. Should I be flipping out or something? No seriously, I feel like people are overreacting. If it happens, it'll happen. Most of the coastal areas in New York (as far as I'm aware of) have excellent preparations.
EDIT: Just got a phone call from my city to prepare for an evacuation alert. *Eats words*
Gov. Christie just declared a State of Emergency and is urging people not to travel to the Jersey Shore this weekend. No mandatory evacuation yet; however, it's not off the table.
I'd feel better if he just got the TV show canceled.
I'm supposed to be moving in to college up in White Plains on Saturday, but my Monday classes have all been cancelled and we've been advised not to move in until then. I don't really know what I'm going to do yet.
Does anyone know where to get Steak-Ums? My brother used to make them when we had the rare hurricane party, and I'd like to make them for my hurricane party/orgy this weekend.
Earthquake AND a hurricane? Chicago is so boring. All we get are stupid blizzards.
Anyway, given the path, the hurricane is likely to drop quite a bit in intensity by the time it hits NY and NJ. It'll be a nasty storm, but probably not too destructive to the northeast.
