It took me over an hour to get to work this morning. I tried to go a different way but that was flooded, so I tried to go the usual way but that was closed. A cop suggested I try 95N but the Rt1 ramp was closed. Finally, I got in touch with a coworker who made a suggestion and I was finally able to make it to work. Everyone is here except for two people and no one can get in touch with either of them.

My mother was on the road for two hours before she turned around and went home. The roads she takes to work flood in less rain than this so everywhere she went was closed.

I'm amazed at all the snide bull**** flying around the media this morning. In one breath they're snickering and pointing fingers at all the 'over-hyped nonsense' of the storm, while also blithely reporting a couple dozen deaths and huge amounts for damages.

What am I missing, except perhaps the further disintegration of any kind of civility or rationality?

Power now back on to do an update.

I also live near Schenectady. The Stockade area was flooded as of yesterday. No idea about the Mohawk River in that particular area but the Mohawk around Schoharie is a huge mess. My grandmother and her nurse were in Scotia over the bridge that connects from Sch'dy to Scotia between the Mohawk. I am just glad she is not alone.

I had work yesterday, seeing as how my idea of 'emergency travel' under the county's state of emergency included this job I went for my 11:30 to 8 shift. The power was completely shut down since 9:30 and since I work in a grocery store that meant total removal of nearly everything that is supposed to be frozen. From the cooler to the freezer to the cooling trucks everybody at work yesterday had to move stuff around that included a lot of repacking old cardboard boxes. We plan to report the stuff that cannot be saved as damage. The power finally came back on at 6 right after everything was pretty much removed from all departments. I had nothing to close with in my department so I got to leave an hour early. Just glad I am not working today. I can only imagine how much re-stocking is going on. With that said, I probably had some of my better moments in customer service although I cannot understand why anybody is grocery shopping for ingredients for tortilla soup in the middle of tropical storm where flooding, power lines, branches, were all over the roads.

My mother's side of the family in Long Island had mandatory evacuations. They all went up to my aunt's cabin in Kinderhook Lake. They're all fine but as far as they know their homes are just without power. I am hoping that is just the case.

My daughter called in to her grocery store job yesterday because she was home alone, had no power or water (well) and there were road issues on the route in. She lives a half hour from the store on a good day. We're hoping she doesn't get disciplined for it.

My partner works on the corner of Erie and State in Schenectady and he was able to get to work despite the fact that 890 was supposedly closed at certain points, but they're definitely on wait and see mode since there's a chance that the water from the Stockade could reach Erie Blvd.

I have no power now, & have not had it in about 24 hours now. They say that it will take days or weeks to get it back up. There are roads and areas flooded here, but nothing that stopped me from getting to town to run errands. Right now I'm doing a laptop/phone charge at McDonald's using their wifi. So odd that it seems areas that were supposed to get hit harder have power and all that. I'm inland in the northern most county of NJ, so that's why I'm surprised.

This is self updating so it's fairly current. It's only main roads in NJ but it's still helpful

So I just went over and back the Mohawk River and I have never seen it that high ever. Collins Park was under water, Jumpin' Jacks was under water, parts of the Stockade were under water, the Community College Parking lot was a quagmire, and the Glen Sanders Mansion with the scenic view of the river was partially flooded with the gazebo all but destroyed. I think it is safe to say Jumpin' Jacks will be closed before normal labor day end of season closure. Flooding stretched over the 890 exit even through the bus stations and the armory. Erie Blvd for now looked okay but the flow of the water from the river was as fast as I have ever seen it. Trees and the power lines were engulfed. It made for a lot of rubber-necking, traffic, and spectators taking photos (myself included) but in Rotterdam and Schalmont there are actual home evacuations going on.

The Pimping Of Irene

"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.” ~ Muhammad Ali

I just looked at the pictures on the TimesUnion website of the Scotia area and it's seriously one of the most frightening things I've seen. It's literally three miles away and down the hill from where I freaking live.

My partner says that Erie near where he is (corner of State) is getting iffy and could be very tricky later. OK now...presuming he's coming home up the State St hill...but as for getting to work tomorrow, all bets are off.

For those going around claiming that Irene was "nothing but hype" try telling that to former Skid Row member Sebastian Bach whose home in NJ of 21 years was "destroyed, condemned and deemed uninhabitable" by Irene.

Be grateful that nothing happened to your home, apartment, car or business because there are many in our area who cannot say the same. People need to stop living in their own little bubbles and realize that just because it didn't affect them it didn't affect someone else.

I don't think anyone--much less Christie and co.--had any idea that North Jersey would be much more affected than the shore. The focused most of their time and planning on what seemed like a sure thing, but it turned around and went in the opposite direction. I just got off the phone with a friend in Nutley who said that she's still without power and half the town is underwater.

That's Mother Nature for you. You just never know. You think she's going to turn East and she decides, "F*CK it, I'm going North". I've been through 5 hurricanes, including Katrina.

Yea, I live in the Stockade. Luckily where it's not flooded. I went back to see if I could get clothes for tomorrow, but all of the entrances were barricaded. I told the cops sitting there where I live and they said I couldn't drive in, but I could walk in. Had to park at a lot on Erie and walk over. I took some picturesof water on Ferry St as well as Washington (where I used to live, thank God no more) before going to my place. Lots of people and cars were still there. It was quite relaxing and peaceful, a lot of people walking around. Hoping the barricades are down tomorrow and power is restored!

I'm in southern Mass, with no power. I haven't seen a single electric company truck or heard a word about how long it'll be or what. Luckily, I have access to a generator.

The funny thing is the power company's website claims that 8% of my town is without power.... I suppose it's a big coincidence that each and every house I passed by when I went out about an hour ago had it's lights off. 8% my left foot.

So we lost power for a couple of hours and the tree outside my house that the power lines are extremely close to made it through the night. We had alot of flooding in my town and some people had to be evacuated...luckily we had only a leaky window to deal with. My grandfather's house in Sea Isle City made it through with a little water damage....the only thing between the house and the beach is the dune so they got lucky

I know nobody cares anymore, but we ended up getting power back tonight after being out for about 54 hours. I have not ventured anywhere but my local area, but it is still a huge mess here. Basically, route 46 is flooded in a lot of places, there is a sinkhole somewhere. Route 287 north partially collapsed by the Rockaway River. It's crazy. I have never seen things this bad up here.

A friend of mine got electricty back last night. Her work has been closed the past few days and she's a little scared to go. She works at a chocolate store with tons and tons of chocolate in freezers. With the power out the freezers were not working.

Also, the trouble the hurricane causes seems to be never ending as noted with the article I linked. Be careful of water, guys.

Finally back after getting our power on last night at the shore house. Deal Lake overflowed up to my front lawn, so much water in our basement with now way to pump. Thankful to Allenhurst Fire Dept. was able to provide power on Sunday to do it and a neighbor on Monday who lent us his generator. Very thankful to be so lucky considering the real devastation the storm caused so many.

Eff all those who are griping about the overhyping of the storm. I'm embarrassed for those fellow New Yorkers who are so self centered.

Absolutely, doodle. They're saying this could go down as one of the 10 costliest storms (not adjusted for inflation, I'm assuming) in U.S. history.

Those of us who got off easy should be grateful.

Yeah, besides a power outage, I would say I got off easy. I live up a hill not near any water, meaning flooding is very unlikely. I saw on the news that Paterson and Wallington were being evacuated last night because of the Passaic River.

I made the mistake of listening to Rush Limbaugh and Dennis Prager while running lunchtime errands on Monday (yes, local talk radio is that pathetic) and both were so supercilious and condescending I wanted to take them out behind the barn and knock their heads together.

Not that it would help, but I'd feel a hell of a lot better.
