Mabel, you did WW?! You're, like, the skinniest person ever!
Tiff, I admire your efforts, I couldn't last an hour without carbs. Don't feel bad about slipping! I've decided that it really isn't worth it to stress about every single calorie. Life is no fun if you can't enjoy foods you love.
And The Pillowman closes in September, so you wouldn't be able to see it in October anyway.
Lets see...questions on my test: Describe in detail the roles of a personal manager, agent, lawyer, and business manager. Describe their roles in relation to touring. (Those made up a great deal of the test, which is good because I know that stuff). Name 5 departments of a record company and describe what they do (A&R, distribution, etc.). Describe how personal managers, agents, lawyers, and business managers are paid. All that stuff wasn't bad, but I had trouble with the specific New Zealand questions. Like, name and describe two opportunities to unsigned New Zealand artists provided by New Zealand On Air. And more stuff like that, which I wasn't familiar with until I took this course and I'm still a little shaky on. Anyway, I guess it wasn't so bad. And grading is different here: 80%-100% is considered an A. So I'm sure I didn't do all that poorly. It's 20% of my grade, though, so it is pretty important.

Good grief. It's 2:50am and I haven't the least bit of desire to go to sleep yet. Why? Because I just finished watching "Saw" and my imagination is far too over-active tonight. Have you gals seen it? It scared the utter crap out of me although in retrospect, it's not that much of a visually gory movie - it's the quick cuts, graininess, jolty camera work and loud screaming (not to mention the most unimaginably awful torture devices!) that make the movie so effective.

To make things worse, I'm a teeth-grinder when I sleep, but that bear-trap mechanism on that girl's jaw has made me paranoid.

movies don't normally have this effect on me! Maybe I'll try watching Princess Bride to lull me into unconsciousness. Toodles until later on today! (#1 & Mabs, I'll respond to your post once I'm better rested!)

Awww, thanks, Elphie! You're a peach! Welcome Back, SmEllie! Oddly enough, I slimmed down quite a bit at school (though I never have been, and never will be, a size zero or anything crazy like that!). Especially the past two years, having my own kitchen/doing my own cooking. I like cooking, but not when I have to do it for every meal, every day, and as a result I started eating less. Not like I'm starving myself or anything...far from it, but more like I'm eating what should actually be a portion of chicken and an actual portion of rice, and I'd fill in the rest w/ veggies, because they're so easy to cook w/ this little micro steamer I've got. That, and I walk a hell of a lot more when I'm in the city. I've definitely put on some lbs this summer. I spend so much time just sitting at my desk, and when I get home I just feel like vegging and I've gotten back on the "mmmm, this is good, I think I'll go back for seconds" kick. Bad!

Tiff, I didn't see saw. I'm definitely not one for horror movies. I love a good suspense movie, but I just can't handle the uber-gory. Well, you said this wasn't so gory, but I still don't think I could handle it. I'm a big wimp! I hope The Princess Bride did the trick!

Elphie, that's kind of interesting w/ the grading system! What does it drop to after 80%?? Is 70-80 still a C or do they go crazy and have 60-80 as D? Oh wait, I forgot B...hmmm...Anyway, it sounds like you knew enough of the stuff to feel confident about it! Just the NZ stuff that might have been a bit foggy. You'll be fine! Welcome Back, SmEllie!

ETA: From The Boston Globe:

U2 at Fenway in '06?
By Carol Beggy & Mark Shanahan, Globe Staff | August 18, 2005

Before Mick Jagger has even set foot on the stage at Fenway Park, the whispering has begun about next summer's boffo shows at the ballpark. How do you follow Bruce Springsteen, Jimmy Buffett, and the Rolling Stones? How does U2 sound? Word is the Irish lads, who are on a never-ending tour to promote 'How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb," are nearing a deal to occupy the outfield next summer for two nights. Neither the Sox nor Clear Channel would comment yesterday, but the band has demonstrated it's a big fan of Boston. In May, Bono and the boys played three sold-out shows here, and they're returning for two more at TD Banknorth Garden Oct. 3 and 4. But wait, there's more. According to the trade publication Pollstar, U2 is bound for Boston yet again in December, playing shows at the new Garden on Dec. 4 and 5.

EATA: Blech!!!! Word on the street is there are about to be two more support acts announced soon: Super Furry Animals and Kanye West. Who the hell are SFA? Never heard of 'em? And Kanye West? Yeah, rap does zilch for me, so not too thrilled about that. Oh well, looks like happy hour it shall be!!

Kayne West? Isn't he a country singer? Or am I thinking Keith Urban...Oh hell, either way, shots of vodka for us before the show!

Good GOD, MORE U2 shows in Boston?? MORE?? Eventually Boston's gonna get sick of the boys! Oversaturation isn't a good thing. They should always leave the audience wanting more. Then again, with that many shows, the setlists are bound to become more and more creative. There's going to have to be an "I Will Follow" somewhere in the mix. Looks like you're gonna hafta start saving up some moola, Mabs!

Elphie, 80-100 for an A?? Wow! So the GPAs there should be really stellar, right? What IS the difference between a personal manager and an agent? Does the manager have more to do with protecting the artist's creative integrity and direction of his/her career while the agent is more focussed on negotiating finances?

Oooh, hooray! I'm bored out of my mind! This gives me a good 5 minutes worth of typing to keep me occupied! I could just ramble on and on, and that'd only leave me w/ a 1/2 hour or so before I have to leave! Goody!

Tiff, you dolt! Kanye West is a rapper!! Or were you being facetious and that went right over my head?!? Though rap is right up there w/ country on my "avoid like the plague" music.

And the Boston/Fenway gig isn't supposed to be until next summer. There are some people thinking that they may be recording a new album quickly, a la Zooropa, and they'll release that w/in the next year, and that leg will be a US stadium tour to support the new album. Frankly, I have my doubts that any of that will happen. I predict Australia, then maybe South America and then they take another 5 year hiatus before we see anything from them again...well, other than Bono politicing, of course!

Anything else?...Nope! I think that's it...How's day 4 on Atkins? It is day 4, right? Go, Tiff, GO! You can do it!

Day 4 is going okay. I've realized the way to not be tempted to eat carbs is to sleep a lot and wake up late in the day so I've got less opportunity to eat anything. *sigh*

I booked a PA job for tomorrow - The Cleaner, that Lucy Liu and Nicollette Sheridan movie. Sort of nervous about it - the people who called me sound like those fast-talking, self-important, fake Hollywood types.

Not being facetious - I've heard of Kanye West, and a couple of my friends went to his concert last year, but I know nothing about rap or country music. Neither Keith nor Kanye are very big in Canada - we have better taste than that. (Celine excluded.)

I'm doubtful about another album as well. As cool as the concept of a stadium tour sounds (and the 'look' of them when you watch clips or whatever), it doesn't really appeal to me unless you've got stellar seats close to the stage (and really, tere aren't any reserved seats close to the stage unless you get a really angled side view) or you've got GA and are willing to camp out for days to be in the first 2 rows by the stage. (I think anything past tenth row in a stadium is pointless.)

Et tu? How are you doing today? I'm heading out to pic up some of my Europe photos, but I'll be back later. I've only just started editing and cropping the U2 concert photos! Aww, memories.

Hmmm...I think the side of pasta would do you in, my friend! Seriously, while I give you props, I just don't know how you do it?!

Well, I never know when you're pulling my leg, so I figured I'd double check on the Kanye West thing. He seems kind of pompous and obnoxious to me, but it takes all kinds, I suppose. So it looks like it could be him or the Fabu Furry Critters or whoever the hell they are. ZZZZZZZZZZ...hardly seems fair when other folks got such good openers.

I'm pretty bored at work...shock! I've got 20,000 thingies and some change to type up in the next week. Don't think it's going to happen. No one's really going to care if I don't finish it, but I would have liked to have finished this file.

I was toodling around travelocity, and saw some flights from Vancouver to NY for around $500. Nothing stellar, but still better than the $800 you were mentioning before.

Be sure to post some pix from Europe!!! YAY!

Is that travelocity.com or .ca? Because the .com prices are in US$, and you have to times that by 1.3 to get the Canadian equivalent. Can I eat Mabel's arm with a side of pasta?

UGH! It was .com...blast! I guess that'd bump it up to around $600. How impossible would Seattle be? Because I just looked that up and it's in the $250-300 US range. How far is it for you? Could you finangle a ride?...Do you still have a student ID that you could use? I was looking at www.quickcoach.com and they have a round trip bus to the airport in Seattle for students for $52 (US, I'm assuming, since it's .com) It's $74 for adults, btw.

I work at West Point (Military Academy). Ooooh, and I may be working/interning at All My Children in the fall, if all else fails. *knock on wood*...not that I want to work on a soap! Blech! But beggars can't be choosers, right?!

I didn't know you work at West Point! Isn't that in...*thinking* Washington, DC/Philly? I visited there on a tour of the east in 2001, but I don't remember where exactly it is.

Oh yay, so you got the internship for AMC? (Or was it Guilding Light before?) Is this a New Line production? I didn't know AMC filmed in NYC!

I'm considering Seattle too, but it's unlikely the folks would give me a ride down there (mom doesn't want me to go, and dad doesn't know and once he does, he'll be pissed), and the only shuttle bus that connects Vancouver Intl to Seatac Airport doesn't have any buses that will get me there or pick me up at the appropriate time if I choose the cheapest of flights. Can I eat Mabel's arm with a side of pasta? Any other ideas? (By the way, I totally forgot about those LV tickets, so I should look into selling them ASAP! When does U2 do their first show in America again? I figure that's when the hype will be back and I'll get hte best price.)

Ok, here's my little find for the afternoon...I edited my last post, putting it in...www.quickcoach.com

They have shuttles that get to Seattle's airport at 7:30 and 10:30 PM. The cheapest flight to NY is an overnight flight that leaves Thursday at midnight in Seattle and arrives in NYC the next morning around 10 am. That way, you could sleep on the flight and get a whole day in the city on Friday, rather than leaving Friday morning and wasting most of a day (and paying $100++ more) I haven't checked return flights, but this one's $233 US.

The shuttle is $54 US w/ a student ID. Does yours have a date on it?? Could you still use it?

*continues scheming away*

Oh, and West Point is in NY state (an hour train ride from NYC)

New Line Cinema fell through entirely, but they said they'd hold my resume for future reference (yeah right!)

All My Children is a US soap opera on ABC...which means discounts at Disney (dunno if that includes interns as well) and there'd be an outside chance that I could go to the Daytime Emmys if the show was nominated for writing, since that's the dept I'd be in (I believe my friend who works there says they've brought their interns in the past...or maybe I'm just making that up!)

ETA: Still at the $233 US price, they have a flight leaving Tuesday at noon, that'd get you into Seattle at 5 pm...the last shuttle to Vancouver leaves at 7pm...that'd be doable, right? Assuming everything runs on time! Or there's a flight at 5pm that gets into Seattle at 10:20, and the first shuttle back to Vancouver is at midnight, so that wouldn't be so ridiculous either...Just a thought!

EATA: That'd put you in under $400 CA, w/ airfare and the shuttle!!! Can I eat Mabel's arm with a side of pasta?

Oh well, I've (sort of) caught up...

Super Furry Animals are a slightly eccentric Welsh rock band who actually aren't half bad, but I suppose you were hoping for at least someone you've heard of! Anyway, I'm sure they'll put on a good show and they're lively enough.

I saw The Pillowman when I was in the US last month, and I totally understand your obsession (?) with it. Martin McDonough is one of the best playwrights around (He's Irish y'know!), and the acting was superb all round. I'm sorry to hear it's closing.

For the sake of conversation...

I've got that Franz Ferdinand/Scissor Sisters/Maroon 5 concert I think I told you about next Wednesday which should be amazing!
I had a ticket to see Eminem at Slane (as in the U2 DVD), which was cancelled today, but I'm not too pissed off as I never really wanted to go anyway...but ssh! I'm also going to see Arthur Miller's play 'A View from the Bridge' tomorrow night, starring Chris Meloni of Law and Order fame. It's a terrific play and I watch Law and Order religiously, so that should be fun.

Good luck with all your planning and scheming, Mabel & Tiff!

Hey Jez!!! Long time no see!!! How's it going?!? You still owe us a blow by blow recount of your Dublin show! Can I eat Mabel's arm with a side of pasta?

Yeah, I guess we've been kind of chatty lately. Basically, I'm extremely bored at my summer job, so I amuse myself posting long, drawn out recounts of my various trials and tribulations. #1Elphie's studying abroad in NZ, so she's keeping us up to date w/ everything down under, Tiff's been doing some very exciting sounding PAing on a bunch of films in Vancouver (I'm super jealous), and Ellie has finally decided to grace us w/ her presence after being away for weeks! There's a lot to read, but alas, very little of it is U2 related.

Tiff, I'm going to go back and post links to the flights, or flight #'s or something to break it down a little more.

Howdy stranger! How are ya? You still owe us a concert review! Can I eat Mabel's arm with a side of pasta?

Mabs, you just might be a genius! I was looking at quickcoach (they were the ones who didn't have any good schedules if I was leaving on Friday) but I didn't consider going on Thursday night instead of Friday morning. I have a student ID still, and I have a coupon for QuickCoach I've been holding on to (I don't know if I can get 50% off instead of buy-one-get-one-free though). Lemme check those itineraries on travelocity.com. I normally don't like travelocity because their prices tend to be higher than expedia.ca, which is my lover. (I go on there far too often.)

Can you check travelocity.com/.ca times for leaving/returning on Thursday night/Monday late morning, and I'll do the same for expedia.com/.ca?

Yeah, October's the U2 fest...I don't know if SFA is opening there or not though. They're supposed to support for 5 dates (though it hasn't been announced where yet) and Kanye West is supposed to be supporting several dates as well. Ech...doesn't do much for me, to be perfectly honest, but whatever. Tiff and I are going on 10/8 (and Ellie and her friends have seats that night as well in a different, much better section) and 10/10. I also went crazy and bought a pair (all three dates are behind the stage) for 10/14. *blush*

Tiff, here's what I've got (for a potential option):

Thursday 10/6/05, Departs SEA at 11:55 pm (there's a shuttle that gets to SEA at either 7:30 or 10:30...dunno if 10:30 would be cutting it close??) United, Flight 307/670, Arrives in NYC (LGA) at 10:04am on 10/7 (1 change in Chicago)

Flight from SEA to LGA

Then, you've got 2 choices on Tuesday:

1.) United Flight 679/535, which leaves LGA at noon and arrives in Seattle at 5:07pm (change in Chicago)...there's a shuttle to Vancouver from the airport at 7pm

2.) United Flight 689/943, leaves LGA at 5:05pm, arrives in Seattle at 10:19pm (also, change in Chicago)...shuttle to Vancouver at midnight.

I have high hopes for it - I've read it but never seen it performed live before.

How did you get on with the Franz album by the way? I meant to drop you a note to say I really enjoyed the CDs you sent me - I've listened to them a lot to get my U2-live fix!

Good to know about SFA, should they open at MSG. "Eccentric Welsh rock band" sounds interesting!

I managed the first two dates manning multiple computers in the lab in my dorm. I was only planning on buying one pair, so I got 10/8, the first date that came up, and just after I put in my cc info, 10/10 popped up w/ a pair of 218 (much closer than the 409s for 10/Can I eat Mabel's arm with a side of pasta? and I just couldn't resist. Then I found the 10/14 tix on interference, and bought them for me and my mom, since she really, really wanted to go in Boston, but I couldn't find any extras...but, come to find out, the folks booked a vacation in FL a couple days before I bought the U2 tix, leaving the same day as the concert. Oh well, it's the 5th of 5 shows at MSG in one week, it should be an exciting show!

I've got a very busy few weeks there...U2x3, The Rolling Stones, Coldplay (I know, I know...everyone but me and Elphie seem to think they suck, but I like them!) and I would have bought tix for Franz Ferdinand for a friend and I (they're playing The Theater at MSG on 10/16 and 10/17) but the tix were almost twice as much as the other dates on their tour, so I decided to pass...can't bring myself to pay almost as much for FF as I paid for U2. Oh well, I think I'll be concert'd out. I swear, I'd gone to like 1/year for the past 5 years. I guess I'm making up for lost time now!

And wasn't The Pillowman AMAZING?!?!? I'd read some of McDonagh's plays, but this was the first I've actually seen.

ETA: Bye, Jez! I'd love to hear about View! I wish I'd seen it when they revived it a few seasons ago w/ Anthony Lapaglia and Alison Janey. Kicking myself for missing The Iceman Cometh w/ Kevin Spacey too. ARG!

Wow, you guys posted a lot in my absence! I'll go back and read everything later, but I just wanted to say that Super Furry Animals are pretty good. I've heard some of their music and like what I've heard. So don't knock 'em before you hear 'em!

ETA: okay, I can add more now. Here's the grading scheme:
A=80-100
B=65-80
C=50-65
D=failing. below 50

Those are broken down into +s and -s as well. When my grades are sent back to my school in the U.S., I'm pretty sure they only see the letter grade, which is great for me!

Let's see, what else...Tiff, I hope you manage to make it out to NYC in the fall. And Mabs, congrats on AMC! I think that would be pretty interesting regardless of whether or not you're a soap fan. My grandmother would be so jealous. Can I eat Mabel's arm with a side of pasta? She loves that show; she watches it everyday. And it must be nice to at least have something lined up.
