Yep, the chocolate is insanely cheap because of the factory in town. And the quality is amazing; it's so much better than Cadbury chocolate in the U.S. I'd be happy to send some back to you, Tiff. Let me know. I'm definitely going to stock up before I leave and bring tons back home with me.
And mabs, I gotta go with your roomie. I only eat steak that is basically burnt. There can't be any pink in it. I have a real issue with undercooked meat. *ducks*

I like chocolate. And steak, but I'm with Elphie. Who wants to eat raw flesh? Like, ew. PLUS I saw on TV that sometimes there are little parasite eggs that aren't killed when steak is cooked rare, and they showed this man who had a 20 foot tapeworm pulled out of his intestine. 'Twas gross.
No need to duck, Elphie. Just don't make me eat it that way or make me feel guilty for not wanting to eat it that way. I don't like my steak to be gushing or anything, but yeah, I definitely gotta have pink in there! I usually walk away feeling like I'm some sort of freak of nature for not wanting my steak to be one step away from bricket. It's just not worth it. I'll wait it out and have a steak when I go home. And Tiff, it's a date for October. I'm not really sure of any great steak joints in the city, because my main dinner buddy is a vegetarian. We'll have to scope it out and find some place decent.
ETA: Looks like it's just you and me on the steak front, Tiff.
But, I mean, there's a difference between eating gray meat and medium/slightly pink meat. I get grossed out when it's so soft that it looks nearly raw and there's blood all over the plate, though.
Thanks for the offer, #1. Wait until the day I crack from Atkins, and you'll be getting a merry PM from me. Do you find things to be cheaper in NZ because of their currency?
BTW, Mabs, why not make a steak, and cut the perimeter out to give your roommate, and eat the center?
*sigh* Our food differences are a long story. A long, and (I'm going out on a limb here) boring story! Not really worth recounting here.
I'll believe you on that one, although if it involves wayward meat worms and holy water, I may expect you to divulge at some point! I was friends with a girl who was one of those self-righteous left-wing vegans who would get on her high horse daily about the evils and health risks of me eating NOT ONLY MEAT but by-products as well. We were at a Greek restaurant and sharing an entree once, which was calamari with Greek salad, rice, potato and pita. I was going to eat hte calamari and she'd have the rest. When the pita came, she sent it back because it had margarine on it. When the Greek salad came, she sent it back because of the feta cheese. (Why didn't she ask for no feta cheese? SHE ORDERED A GREEK SALAD!! That's like ordering a pizza and going, "Oh no, it has tomato sauce on it. Take it away!)) When the rice and calamari came on the same plate, she refused to eat it because the calamari had been touching some of the rice on the side. And she wouldn't eat the potato because it was cooked in the same oven as the roast lamb. (Not at the same time, mind you.)
You're preaching to the choir, honey! I lived w/ a fruitarian. She actually believed the carrots had feelings and were being killed, having their little souls quenched out when they were forcibly ripped from the ground. She would only eat fruit (this only lasted 4 days mind you, but STILL) because it had fallen freely, of its own will, when it was ready to leave its home in the tree and give itself to be eaten. Ummmm, yeah, I'm sure the fruit at the NYC bodega lovingly collected their fruit only after it had freely fallen off the tree. I'm sure that apple was forcibly ripped from the brances by some sharp clawed machine or roughly plucked off by workers. Give me a break!
I'm actually LOLing right now. I didn't know people like that really exist! When do you start dorming? Next week?
ETA: Poodlebear, how about 21 Club for my birthday? How symbolic, classy and delectable at the same time! (And at those prices, we'll be eating out of cans for the rest of the week, but still!)
*looks around*...Poodlebear...*points to self* Oh, me? Good friggin LORD!!! Tiff, my love, I just don't think it's in me to pay $50 for a steak. I'll keep my eyes peeled for a fun divey place. We'd have more fun being loud and obnoxious there anyway!
If I was going to have an oven in my kitchenette, I'd offer to make a steak. I can only do so much w/ my George Foreman. Steak really isn't it's specialty.
Yeah, the fruitarian thing was super crazy! The funniest part of it was the fact that she bought a sweatshirt from the book store during fruitarian week. I wouldn't give it a rest that she seemed to care more about potatos than the children that slaved away for 10 cents a day in a sweat-shop to make that sweatshirt!....and then I ate some carrots in front of her. I'm kind of evil that way.
Please tell me you prefaced the carrot-eating with a little bit of side-mouth talking, "Don't eat me and my brothers! Don't eat me and my brothers! Aaahh!! It hurts!!"----CHOMP
Dude. You've got a George Foreman? I've wanted one for the last 5 years and never got one. It's seriously the one appliance I've ever really wanted. Wait till you see my cooking ability. I can eat well, never said I could cook well! (But my Euro cooking is quite excellent!) Will you for sure be having a kitchenette, or will your dorm sisters be mooching offa us in the communal one as well?
Oooooh, I totally made "don't eat me!!!! Ahhhhh!!!" type pleas in a little carrot-y voice! I'm tres mean!
OMG, I don't know what I would have done w/o Georgie! It'd be a living hell! I'll definitely have a little kitchenette. I've got to bring my microwave (and George of course...and find a good place to hide him) and a 2 burner stove-top and a fridge. I'm not sure if the room I've got has a mini dorm fridge or a regular fridge w/ a freezer. I guess I'll find out soon enough. Move in is Sept. 5th.
Don't worry, although I prefer my steak a certain way, I would never impose my tastes on someone else.
I don't know how I'd survive with a fruitarian! And Tiff, that vegan friend of yours doesn't sound much better.
I think I've become a lot more open-minded as to what I eat since I've been here. I'm usually pretty picky, and have been able to get away with that. Here, because we take turns cooking, I'm stuck with some foods that I normally wouldn't go for. But I eat them (because my other option is to have bread for dinner), and I've discovered they aren't so bad!
We have a George Forman at home and in my flat here and I love it. Tiff, you should get one.
Tiff, the cost of living here is a lot cheaper than in the U.S. The average salary is really low, making everything pretty inexpensive. It's great. Of course it means I buy way too much stuff because I think, "Wow! That's so cheap! I can't pass up a price like that!" with everything. Clothes, food, etc.
Mabs, you move in the day after my bday!
I'm excited. I just turned in an essay that marks the end of my spurt of crazy work to do (it felt so good to get it out of my hands) and my family arrives in exactly one week from today!
Hooray for broadening your food horizons, and for unloading your essay, Elphie! I used to be a lot pickier before I went to school, but then it started to become too much of a hassle and I toned it down a little. Though I do still have my moments!
And yeah, I don't get fruitarians/vegans/whatever other crazy thing your can come up w/. I can understand not wanting to consume animal biproducts (to an extent) because of the mistreatment of animals, being cooped up in crampt quarters, etc. While that's not going to stop me from enjoying an omlette or having a slice of cheese, I can at least see that as a progression from vegetarianism...BUT, to think that it's wrong to take milk from cows, honey from bees, etc, because it's not ours to take??? That seems like a bit of a stretch. If the chicken's gonna lay the eggs anyway, why can't someone eat it?!?!?
Anyway, I'm off for the night. It's getting kind of late, and I have to drag my ass out of bed at 7am for work. Booo!!! But at least it'll be Friday! And it's Napoleon's b'day (as well as his last day at the office) so that should provide some good laughs!
Night ladies!!
Good night, Mabs! Do you realize the amount of time that you, #1 and I have spent on here today cumulatively? It's kind of horrifying. (Granted, it's been on and off today, right??)
#1, how long is each September? How's romance progressing with the Vermontian?
"#1, how long is each September?"
Sorry, I don't know what that means. Should I?
And the Vermontian has a girlfriend, so there's no hope there. We're buddies, though. He's gone a lot because he skis. We're all wondering how he manages to keep up w/ school because he's gone from Wednesday-Sunday skiing. Right now he's been gone for 9 days skiing (he has races or something). So it's like I hardly ever see him!
I've met a couple of cute Kiwi guys, but nothing to report on yet. I'll keep y'all updated.
And yes, we all have no lives.
Okay, I'm off. Night, gals!
"#1, how long is each September?"
Sorry, I don't know what that means. Should I?
Yeah, WTF?!?!? What does that mean, Tiff? Some wacky Canadian saying??
Yeah, I can't believe we spent so much time on here chatting last night!! Though, with the (glaring) exception of groupie, it was the first time in ages we've had everyone on here in one day! Even Jez, for goodness sake!
Vermont is gone from Wed-Sun?!? Every week?!?!? That's kind of crazy! Is he on some sort of team w/ the university? Must be nice!
OK, I'm tempted to go on a lengthy rant because I'm bored at work (and it's only quarter past 10!) but I'll spare you! Though, I will say that I'm significantly worried about my Stones tix, because after seeing the setup for Fenway it's one friggin monstrosity!!! I wonder if they'll change the setup for arenas, since even though this seems to be a primarily stadium tour, there are several arenas. I'm actually more worried about getting stuck w/ that extra ticket. No on will want to buy it if the show's got such a dodgy setup. Should have just bought a single! I think they play another arena before MSG, so we shall see how that's set up, I suppose...Oh, and still no opener for MSG. I'm getting a little freaked though, because for every Wilco/Pearl Jam/Beck, there's a Maroon 5/Jason Mraz/Los Lonley Boys (ugh! They were just announced for Chicago!) I checked schedules and Pearl Jam's in Ottawa the night of MSG, and I even checked Green Day (just for kicks) but they're in Ohio. Booo!!! With the announcement of LLB, I'm nervous that JoJo's going to be on the bill! Ooooh, though I could pull a "hey, we're totally related! Remember the cuz's graduation?!?!? Get me backstage!...MICK!!!!"
ETA:
BLAST!!! Someone was giving away free tix to see Neil Diamond at MSG and no one would go w/ me. Come on, how hilarious would that be?!?!? Bedazzled shirts, talk-singing, and screaming along to "Sweet Caroline"!!! I went through 5 people! *sigh* I could have gone for a good mindless evening of bad, yet catchy, music!
Arg! I totally would have gone to see Neil Diamond!
*whines* I wanna be in NYC!
Yeah, Vermont is gone ALL the time. He's on his school's ski team at home, and basically the whole team is here this semester, so they all go off together and train. They don't take attendance in classes here and a lot of people don't go to many of them (though I do, of course ). Most teachers put all the notes on Blackboard (an online site), so missing classes isn't a big deal if you just get the notes from what you missed.
I'm sure you'll be able to sell your Stones ticket. It's the Rolling Stones!
And yeah, if JoHo (I keep typing that by accident!) ends up opening, it would actually be good for you because you might be able to use that family connection to meet the band!
Awww, Elphie!!! We could have had such fun. I love how he doesn't sing anymore, he just kind talks through all his songs. "We're coming to America...Today." Hopefully there'll be all kinds of fun (free) stuff for us to do in the spring!
We have Blackboard at PU. Not many profs use it though. It's kind of convenient though. It's nice when they put up notes, etc. And that's kind of nice that they don't care if/when you go to class. They're really anal about it at PU (I think mainly because the classes are already pretty small, so if we weren't "required" to go to all classes, they'd get tired of teaching to a class of 5 people). I always kind of felt like if you can get away w/ just doing the readings, etc more power to you. I like miss class as little as possible, because if I'm paying such crazy prices for tuition, I might as well get the most out of it! Most of my classes and profs are decent...even though the general business side blows.

I saw JoHo on MTV's Cribs recently, she mentioned all her family were big Red Sox fans - that includes you, Mabel, right? You were mentioned on Cribs!
And I'd hazard a guess that Tiff meant 'How long is each essay?' instead of 'How long is each September?', although you never know - she is quite the eejit.
How long is each essay? Maybe. I don't know what else she could have meant. I'm glad no one else knows what she was talking about; it means I'm not crazy.
Mabs was mentioned on Cribs! We have a celebrity in our midst! So is JoHo's 'crib' nice?
I usually don't like to miss classes, either. I've only missed 2 here, because I accidentally slept through them.
I should go practice guitar now, but I can't make myself get up. Ug.

Well her 'crib' was okay, I suppose. It's really her parents, of course...she's only seven years old, after all.
Tiff - each September lasts thirty days.
Thirty days have September, April, June and November...all the rest have thirty-one, except for February, which...blah, blah, blah...
And go practice your guitar, Elphie! What standard are you up to? And what time is it in NZ, anyway - what are you, two months ahead of us, or something?
Now go! I'm off now, anyway...what other possible reason could one have for hanging around? Toodles!
It's 11:30am on Saturday morning.
I'm pretty bad at guitar, which is why I have to practice. I think the class that I'm in is too advanced for me, but it's the level they placed me in, so I gotta try and keep up. I don't practice enough. We're playing some good songs, though, like Memory.
ETA: Okay, I'm going now, bye all!
Updated On: 8/19/05 at 07:35 PM
Her "crib" was PATHETIC! We have a nicer fridge than she had (and that's saying someting)! And her bedroom was empty, save a twin bed and a Celtics pillow. *shakes head*
Now I have to go back and read the rest of your posts...I just had to get that out of my system ASAP!
ETA: Ooooh, I want to learn how to play the guitar, but I don't think I'd have the patience for it. One of these days I'll pick up a cheap one and play around w/ it for awhile.
Bye gals!
