Oh, god this is killing me. Do I get Destiny's Child tickets in Vancouver or not? LAST! SHOW! EVER! September 10! There's still some decent seats available at C$63 (which, plus fees, will be in the basically-unaffordable range)...New York trip's more important but this is the last! Show! Ever!
Aie, what to do??
I am not a Destiny's Child fan, and I am seen them live and came out of ths show thinking, "Okay, whatever?"
They are a very talented group, but thanks to media saturation I am OVER THEM. It is at the point now where I get irritated if I see them.
Also, I wouldn't count on this being their last concert ever, but more like their last concert until Kelli and Michelle need another payday.
All these things aside, if you are fan and really feel like they'll seriously retire and it doesn't effect your NY trip, it's probably worth it.
Hmmm...I had no idea you could get SRO for RENT, even if it's not sold out. Geez, if that's still the case, I'd go for that and then sneak to a seat! They've been doing ok, but not selling out (maybe on the weekends?)
Ooooh, Pat! Buckled under the iPod fever! *shakes head* Did you open it yet or are you still just letting it sit there and tempt you?
Tiff, I'm not so keen on Destiny's Child, so I think that decision would be significantly easier for me...and if this is going to be a make or break sort of thing w/ NYC, then I think you know my answer. Beyonce or Bono? Michelle or mabel? That other one or our other one...what's her name? Oh, Ellie! While it would be amazingly fun to be at their "last show ever" (but do we reallybelieve this??) it does sound a bit steep after fees, etc. If tix are still available on TM, maybe you could swing by the arena before the concert and pick something up from scalpers at less than face?
Oh, and Q is still as funny, even when you know the jokes. I won the lotto twice, and the first time I didn't know any of the songs (other than "If You Were Gay," that they'd performed at Broadway on Broadway) and I loved it. The second time, I had bought the CD and listened to it a ton (and I'd already seen it, duh!) and I still had a blast...oh damn, I've seen it 3 times! I also bought a ticket in the very last row to see John Tartaglia's last. Still mucho fun!
Nope, I haven't opened it yet. The thing is still sitting in the box with the band staring at me - no, calling out to me to free them from their cellophane prison.
I am still torn on this. It's mainly the Podcasts that I am interested in, but I have found that I can burn the podcasts onto CD and then transfer them onto MD. I recently bought a very nice minidisc recorder for coughboolegingcough and I suppose I could use it similarly to the way I'd use an Ipod and not be out $300.00.
Sometimes I hate feeling responsible.
I am going to work early this morning to get some extra work in on a project I am doing (read: overtime) and it will give me some time to think about this purchase.
Now - I am going to leave it up to you guys to give me some friendly advice. :)
Oooh, overtime is always good!
I'm not really sure what I'd do w/ the iPod situation. How big is a minidisc player/recorder? About the same size as an iPod? And how much are minidiscs? Would it end up costing you an arm and a leg to convert all your music to minidisc? Or would you really only be interested in the Podcasts, in which case, it's not like you'd probably be going copy-crazy.
I should get back to packing, but I don't think I have the strength...maybe I'll do some more laundry. Ech.
Yeah, I'm not a Destiny's Child fan either - I enjoy some of their songs, but I don't own any of their CDs (I've just downloaded a few songs) and their ubiquitousness, while not at obnoxious Jessica Simpson-proportions, is grating. I'm just happy that Vancouver gets a somewhat landmark concert here and wanna be around to experience it. I can't entirely suspend my disbelief that they'll be back. (How long as Cher been doing 'farewell tours' again?)
Okay, that makes the decision easier. Bono over Beyonce! Mabel over Michelle! Ellie over her-less-famous-and-unattractive-counterpart (both are a toss-up...take 'em or leave 'em).
Now I need to be talked out of the Oasis, Green Day, the Killers and the Canucks season opener! (I really want to see the Canucks.)
Patronus, do you already have all your *coughbootlegcough* equipment for your Podcast? Is there sufficient space on there for all the recordings and CDs you'll want to have? If so, you might as well return the iPod for now, and wait for the price to go down. (And *coughkeepmeinmindifyou'rebootleggingU2cough*)
Mabel, weren't you just packing a week ago to go home?? Now you're packing to come back to the city?? Sucks to be you!
Oh, and BTW, Nikki and Sivon are probably looking for an apartment together in the fall - if you're looking for roommates for your January semester, you might want to keep them in mind, and see if you three can find a place you'll all enjoy in the new year! Save you a bit of money, eh?
Oh my f*cking God, I heedlessly agreed to PA for a show tomorrow before asking where the location is, and now I'm screwed. I'm working until 12:45am tonight, will get home at 1am, go to sleep at 1:30am, wake up at 3:30am, drive to the bus stop and catch it at 4:45am, change buses and arrive at the f*cking FERRY TERMINAL at 6:11, and get onto set at 7am. I have to cross 3 'burbs and then the freakin' location is in the boonies! It's not even a town! I want to cry. I honestly do.
I had the same dilemma , Tiff! Destiny's Child played here in June, and I knew it was probably my last time to see them. I'm not really a huge fan, so in the end I didn't go. But I kinda wish I had now. Their last concert ever is worth going to if only for the curiosity value! Especially when it's in your hometown.
And Patronus, you don't need an iPod to get Podcasts - just download them onto iTunes and listen to them on your computer!
But an iPod is definitely worth having too.
EDIT - Aw, don't cry Tiff! I'm sure it'll be worth it come payday...it'll help fund all these concerts!
EDIT#2 - By the way, is anybody else as excited as me about Kate Bush releasing an album this November??

Awww, Tiff...drop us a note when you get back from the shoot in the nameless void out there in BC!! Is it at least for a movie that's of interest??
Damn, you've got a lot of noteworthy folks up there. I don't know who I'd choose to see, and who I'd nix. I've made myself an "only in Manhattan" rule (because fees and travel tends to double the price of the ticket for NJ or wherever) so Green Day and The Killers got nixed for me. Oasis is playing on Staten Island (hmmm...so are The Killers, on a different day though) as part of a music fest next month. I think I need to scope it out to see if it's something I could get away just listening to from outside.
How much are tix to see the Canucks' opener, and can you even get tix?? I mean, come on, they've been gone for a year. That'd be who I'd go for if I were a big hockey fan. If I could've snagged season opener tix for the Red Sox (I'll use them, since I'm not a huge Bruins/hockey fan) and it was between them and Green Day or The Killers (no need to toss Destiny's Child into that equation...I swear they'll be back. I give them 3 years) I'd definitely go for the Sox.
At the very least, Beyonce is bound to be back - and she's the main one anyway!
How big is a minidisc player/recorder? About the same size as an iPod? And how much are minidiscs? Would it end up costing you an arm and a leg to convert all your music to minidisc?
They make discs that are as big as a Gig, for about $7.00. In general, on a regular disc I can fit about 10 full CDs. It is all rewritable though, so the expense is relative. On the 1GB disc I could probably get around 35 CDs on it.
It's less convineient, but definately more cost effective.
I can actually listen to a podcast on my MD Player, but it's a pain in the butt. I have to burn it onto a CD and then transfer it to the Minidisc, The fact of the matter is, I can almost listen to a 30 minute podcost in the same amount of time it would take to transfer it.
Again though, I am not sure it's worth $300 to get around that.
I have decided to return the IPod. Mostly because I don't need it considering I have the MD which dispite being a little less convenient can do the same type of thing and I feel kind of sleazy spending that money given what's going on in Louisiana right now. I've decided to return it and make a donation to the American Red Cross. My company is actually giving $2 for every $1 donated by employees, so that's pretty amazing.
(And *coughkeepmeinmindifyou'rebootleggingU2cough*)
Oh, you are already in the loop there, Tiff. In fact, I have already chatted with mabel about meeting up on Tuesday morning following the Monday 11/19 show to get you chica's your ::coughcopiescough:: and she is having me do some dubbing for you.
Hey all! I didn't have time to read through all your posts, but I'm back! My family and I went exploring for a week. We saw lots of Lord of the Rings filming sites, went on a jetboat ride, canoed down a big river, went skiing, went bungy jumping...it was a busy week. But it was fun! This is seriously the most beautiful place in the world. And now I'm back to reality (almost; school starts again on Monday).
Pat, I have a U2 iPod and I love it. It's 20gb, though, and it's almost full. I don't know if it would be worth it for you; I got it as a gift, but I probably wouldn't have paid full-price for it myself.
Welcome back Elphie!
Sounds like a beautiful place, indeed.
The IPod is still here taunting me until I return it tomorrow (unless I have another change of heart). It keeps saying - "the economy is going to suffer a hit...you help the country by buying me...open me up and play me!!!!"
Damn seductive electronis.
Hey folks. Quick one here. Turns out my call time has been pulled to 4am on the ferry, and I'm supposed to be bumming a ride off some guy I don't know at 3am. He was supposed to call me tonight and didn't, so I'm praying he'll call me when he wakes up. I just got home from work an hour ago. Now I get no sleep because in half an hour, I need to get ready for...work. I'm hating this. I'm totally hating this. I'm going to wind up being a highly-caffeinated major bitch on set tomorrow. This is the first time I've NOT wanted to work on a film set. Can't I just quit and freeload of Mabel?
And yeah, I guess it's sort of a film of interest. It's a remake of a movie that had starred Christopher Lee, called 'Wicker Man', and now it's starring Nicolas Cage and Ellen Burstyn. I've always liked Ellen B. Nicolas Cage's persona kind of creeps me out, but I guess his acting's okay, if you go for the dead-eyed monotone thing. Apparently when we're shooting on the freakin' island, he and his wife stay on an 80 foot yacht at the dock instead of commuting back and forth.
#1! How was bungy-jumping? It's on my list of things to do! What did you see from LotR?
Patronus, don't give in! The prices are bound to drop, and you've got a perfectly good MD player as it is! Just because it's shiny and pretty and has autographs etched into it...who needs that?
(I DO!
Aw, sorry Tiff, sounds like you have a sucky day ahead of you. I hope it isn't too bad. Sounds like a good cast, though, so maybe that'll make it interesting. I like Ellen Burstyn as well. And remember that you're making money so that you can go to NY! Your job is still going okay, right?
Bungy jumping was fun! I did it at the site of the first bungy jump, where it was invented. It's over a river (River Anduin in LotR) and I told them I wanted to *brush* the water with my hands (they give you an option). I ended up getting dunked from the waist up (and remember it's winter here). But it was fun, you should definitely do it. Maybe I'll post pictures later. It's so scary when you're standing there right before the jump looking down. But I love that adrenaline rush.
We saw tons of LotR sites, but I'll cover the highlights for me. The Ford of Bruinen, where Arwen rides Frodo across the river away from those scary bad guys on horseback dressed in black (what are they called?) who get swept up in the river; some Rivendell sites, River Anduin, Fanghorn Forest...I don't even remember them all. But it was cool. Everything was absolutely beautiful. We also saw where they filmed some of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (coming out this winter). The scecnery here seems like the perfect setting for fantasy movies like those. I could definitely see it as being the perfect Narnia.
Patronus, I'm sure Tiff's right, the price will drop and soon they'll come out with an even better version. Be strong!
Mabs, are you back in NYC yet? I hope you had a great time at home!
And so the looongest day of my life gets worse. I now haven't slept because I was supposed to have been picked up at 3 and catch the ferry at 4. Instead, I stayed up all night, didn't receive a call until I had to phone my boss at 3:15 to see where the hell this ride was, didn't get another call until 3:40, which was the ride saying he was "5 minutes away". Waited until 4:45, in which the ride didn't answer any of my 20 calls to his cell. Called back my boss, and now we're thinking my ride may have gotten into a car accident on the highway coming into my suburb. Crappier news is my boss won't just let me not come into work, he wants me to public transit it to catch the "last" ferry at 7am. Missed the bus to do that. Hoping I'm free. Nope, there's an 8am ferry for the background actors, and I have to catch that one instead. So now I've been up for 19 hours, and I haven't even started my 15 hours of work yet. I feel like Al Pacino in Insomnia.
I'll put a little perspective on this since I shouldn't complain, seeing what the folks in New Orleans are going through. But my god, I need some sleep.
Pardon the incoherency. I'm an absolute zombie right now.
Yikes, sounds like you have a lot on your plate Tiff. Hang in there and remember it's all about the good fight to get to New York.
Thanks for the further words of encouragement on my extremely trivial IPod apoplexy guys, I appreciate that! I am definately take it back, but I am going to be pouty about it.
So, since I arrived on this thread WAY late, I was hoping that you could give me the cliff notes version about you guys that I may have missed. I am pieces bits and pieces together about you, but sometimes the stories just fly right over my head.
So after being left hanging for over four hours, I just gave up and decided not to go to the shoot. They kept altering their instructions to try and accomodate, but after a while, it just wasn't worth the trouble. I have a feeling they'll never call me for work, ever again. Oh well, 'The Cleaner' called me to work every day next week, so screw you, 'Wicker Man'! (I'm kinda bummed to not see Ellen Burstyn though.)
Patronus, whatdya wanna know about us? Aren't we all open books? Hmm...in Cliff Notes, I'm Tiffany, a recent university grad in Criminology living in Vancouver, but hoping to re-locate to New York in a few years. I used to be an immigration officer and rock climbing instructor, but now I'm working at a pharmacy job I hate and as a production assistant in film. Presently single, but have had some of the truly worst dates in the history of mankind. Out of the people on BWW, Sivon (aka Broadway_Star_Tomorrow) is the only member I've met in person, but I've maintained online friendships with people outside of the BWW medium.
Mabel's name isn't really Mabel (it's actually a prettier name that that!), and she's met #1Elphie (surprisingly, also not her real name!) in person. They both really love Billy Crudup, The Pillowman and go to shows once in a while together. Mabs is an English major at a university I should probably let her specify if she wants to on her own terms. She's working for a theatre company and is also frantically looking for an internship position for next year. (And she's had some pretty great opportunities and some interesting interviews!) She's also very generous with her *coughbootlegcough* sharing, and I can credit 90% of my music *coughfootwearcough* to her.
#1Elphie normally lives in New York, but she's in New Zealand until November, and she's taking a class about the Music Industry! (I think her major is English, though.) I have her to thank for one of my copies of the Best Of 1990-2000! She's also a Wicked fan (who'd'a thunk?) but we're nice to her anyway.
Ellie3 is a sociopath. She passes herself off as 19, but conservative estimates actually make him closer to 47. She's a U2 bandwagon fan, and her loyalties actually lie with Billie Joe and Celine Dion. For some inexplicable reason, we still let her come on this thread...until she posts photos of Celine Dion pre-eyebrow tweezing days, and then we let the thread die until she takes the hint. She claims that she's an English Lit major at Yale, but we suspect she's referring to the Yale Community College & Porn Emporium, adjacent to the AM/PM in New Hampshire, not New Haven.
Don't believe a word that comes out of Ellie's mouth. We humor her because her doctors told us to, and because her meds are in short supply. She's a dirty trollop with bad taste. (And I don't just mean her personal preferences - she actually tastes as bad as she smells.)
Grownupgroupie pops on once in a while (a 30-year-old spring chicken who saw U2 in California this year), as does Jezebel, but I don't know much about him, aside from living in Dublin and seeing what was purportedly once of the best setlists from the Vertigo tour thus far!
(PS. Ellie and I actually get on quite well, but our vicious sense of humor and snarky zingers leave some people unsure, present company excluded. Occasionally, we refer to each other as 'Big' and 'Little Sis', and from here on out I'll probably push that a little more until it makes her uncomfortable, so she thinks I'm as deranged as Sy from 'One Hour Photo'. Oh, and she makes fun of my weight, and I make fun of her being flatchested. But that's neither here nor there.)
Good recaps, Tiff. Couldn't have put it better msyelf.
Sorry about your awful day. That really sucks. Did you sleep the rest of the day?
15 minutes ago I turned 21 here. And I'm sad because my family left earlier tonight. And I miss them already. And tomorrow (or today, I guess) on my birthday I'll be working like crazy to make up for the week of vacationing I did because classes start again on Monday. Yuck. BTW, on a happier note, I love the pink thread title!
Great synopsis, Tiff! I wasn't sure of a lot of it myself. Now that I'm fully educated, I feel so much better.
Happy birthday, Elphie! Don't be too sad, and try to enjoy yourself as you only turn 21 once. I meant to ask you - is teh TV show Shortland Street still on in NZ? They show it here, and I was briefly addicted to it, much to my shame.
And argh - I just found out that Foo Fighters will be playing here, but unfortunately I have tickets to see Blondie on the same night! What do you guys think...should I forget about Blondie and get FF tickets? I love them both!
And c'mon, somebody here has to be excited about the return of Kate Bush!
Kate Bush? The purse designer? No...that's Kate Spade. The model? No...that's Lauren Bush. Okay, you got me. Who's Kate Bush?
Happy 21st, #1! What's the legal drinking age in NZ? 18? (Because I'm sure you've had nary a drop of liquor on your lips, you law-abiding citizen, you!) Wait till you come back to the States in the fall, and then you can REALLY feel like an adult! Your parents were only there for a few days?? Why didn't they stay longer? Are they travelling around Australia or Fiji as well? Seems like too long a flight to take if they're not exploring the other areas as well!
Screw the Foo Fighters! I LOVE Blondie! (I like the Foo Fighters a lot too, but Blondie??)
And Jez, you should tell US more about yourself!
ETA: Mabel, check out www.hbo.com. At the bottom, there's a link to 'Jobs' and right now, Time-Warner has 91 jobs and internships listed for the New York area! (Which covers HBO, Time-Warner, New Line, etc.)
Ugh!!! Happy Birthday, Elphie!!! I totally forgot about you been so much ahead of us here, stateside. I was going to send you a card or something...guess, it wouldn't have gotten there on time no matter what. This past week just went by so fast!!! I'll get something belated together for ya! Sometimes those cards are just as fun.
I'm back in NY state (as of noon or so) and then it's off to the city tomorrow. I move in on Monday morning, and that should be...interesting. I've seriously overpacked. I'm at least third generation (on my mom's side) of compulsive over-packers. I managed to ex-out 2 big-ish boxes and a suitcase of clothes. I was allotted by the folks one meager bag to put shoes in, so that was a bitch (and I'm not even a shoe person!) *sigh* I need to reassess my SH*T and pick out stuff that I know I don't wear anymore and donate it to the Salvation Army. I just end up getting so iffy about what I can bring myself to part w/...along w/ being an overpacker, I'm a serious packrat.
Hmmm...what else to fill in for Pat about myself that I don't mind posting on a message board. Ummm...I'm going to be a senior this year and I'm freaking out, because I still don't know what I want to do when I graduate. Ideally, I'd love to work in film or theater, but I don't knojw what I'd do. I went on several interviews this summer, and I didn't end up getting any of them, which is sad/frustrating/scary. I do have a (tentative) internship at All My Children, and I'm waiting to get my call back on an interview for Theatre Talk at PBS. They've already gotten in touch and said they're interested and want to see me, which makes me feel sadly proud of myself. It's rather pathetic...What else, I think I've well-documented my woes over my depressing summer job. I interned at NAT on The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui my fresman year, and that'll probably end up being the highlight of my "working" experience. It's a damn shame that couldn't have fallen sometime further along than my 2nd week of university. I wish I could have made more of that opportunity, but alas, I'm thrilled to have had such a crazy experience at all. Eye contact w/ Al Pacino, my friend!!! Oh, and this isn't any sad attempt at name dropping, but it does come up every now and then...the little pop tart JoJO (who Elphie always mistakes for JoHo, appropriately enough) is my 2nd cousin. It came up somewhere as a joke that maybe she'd open for U2 in the fall, and I couldn't resist telling the crew. Oh, and Tiff even got to work w/ the little trouper on one of her films!!! I seem to recall that she thinks she looked a smidge on the trampy side. I haven't seen her at a family function for a few years though.
Guess that's about it for now. Happy birthday again, Elphie!! I'd love to see pictures sometime if you get a chance! I'm glad you had fun w/ your family, and that "grazing" of the water sounds thrilling. I think I'd be too chicken to do it though (especially w/ the water that freezing! Brrrrr, you nut!)
What?? Are you serious? I can't believe you haven't heard of Kate Bush! Although I keep forgetting you're all on the other side of the world - so maybe that has something to do with it.
She has released albums in the US though, as far as I'm aware. Her first record came out in the late 70s - Wuthering Heights - and became a huge hit on this side of the Atlantic. Since then, she's released seven albums (every single one of them beyond excellent), including perhaps her finest moment - Hounds of Love. I think that was her most successful effort in the States, so maybe you've heard of it.
Her style of music is difficult to describe - it's very diverse, with a lot of different influences. It's very melodramatic, I suppose you could say, with rocky, ethnic and tender moments. Every song is crammed with emotion. She's sort of the frontrunner for the likes of Tori Amos, Bjork, Sarah McLachlan etc. Some of her more well known songs might be Wuthering Heights, Running Up That Hill, Wow, Babooshka...am I ringing any bells?
She released her last album in 1993, and since then has been a virtual recluse. Until now, that is!! Earlier this week, the announcement came that a brand new album would be released in November, her first in twelve years. I'm a huge fan, as perhaps you've gathered, and I am BEYOND excited. And it's a double album no less!
You all should check her stuff out if you can - trust me, you will not regret it! Well...saying that, I suppose her music isn't for everyone - but I think it's utter genius.
All of the above has been of little or no interest to you all I'm sure, but I can't help but spread the Kate Bush message! Sorry for rambling, but really - look her up!!!
(That's her in my new avatar, by the way...)
And yeah, I think I'll stick with my Blondie tix. It's a much better, more intimate venue - better to be inches away from Debbie Harry than miles away from Dave Grohl, right? Right?
Just a quickie to say:
1.) I've heard of Kate Bush, but I can't say that I know of any of her music, offhand. I'll have to keep my eyes peeled.
2.) Jez, glad to hear you're sticking w/ the Blondie tix. I enjoy the Foo Fighters, but come on, it'd Debbie Harry!
3.) U2's November stint on SNL is re-airing tonight. Too bad I think I'll be out by 10 or so. I don't think I'll make it (and I don't think I taped it any of the other times it aired...maybe I'll have to pop one in).
HAHA. Jez, I'm addicted to Shortland Street. My flatmates make fun of me for it. It's such good trashy tv! I don't watch it all that much, though, because we've only got 1 tv and usually no one else will let me. But yes, it's still going!
I've heard of Kate Bush but aren't really familiar with her music, either.
Mabs, good luck moving in and beginning your senior year! What's your roommate like? Hopefully you've already roomed with all the psychos so you'll be with a somewhat normal person now!
And thanks all for the B-day wishes! I got some cool presents from the fam, mostly Broadway-related. Tickets to The Woman in White (2nd row!) and the London cast recording, the new Sweet Charity cast recording, and Sherie Rene's Men I've Had (and, non-theatre related, the complete first season of The O.C. on dvd!). So presents cheered me up.
