Thanks for the head's up on the U2 repeat, Mabel! I saw it just before I left for work, except I used a tape that only had 45 minutes left on it, so I just BARELY got all of Vertigo. Strangely (but luckily), the first 45 minutes were cut off when I initially taped this SNL, so I already had STYCMIOYO and the last performance on tape, so I really only needed 'Vertigo'.
Do you remember what was apparently performed after they went off air? It seems like they were starting 'All Because Of You' when it cut off. What else did they do?
And now that I've re-watched 'Vertigo'...am I imagining it, or did Bono caress Adam's back during, "All of this, all of this can be yours. All of this, all of this can be yours."? It appears that he slowly trails his hand from the middle to the small of Adam's back. And I got a teensy-tiny girlie boner when I saw it. I'm just sayin'.
I'm also presently reading "The Road to Pop" by Carter Alan. Has anyone read it before? I sort of prefer the Rolling Stones Files, because it's put in a chronological order, and the publication date is at the top of the article. Not to mention since it's a pretty comprehensive compilation of all of RS's coverage, the articles flow better and you can understand the band's personal and artistic progression much more clearly. In this book (which is actually based on interviews that Alan had with the band while DJing for a Boston radio station, Mabel!) I have no idea when the discussion is taking place. But meh.
Mabs, you have a roommate in the fall?? (<-- From what you've told me about your past roomies, do I need to sleep with one eye open, and with a medium-rare steak clutched in a deathgrip to my chest?)
Oh, and ummm...I donated a few hundred dollars to the Red Cross and Habitat For Humanity today. Almost as much as roundtrip airfare between Seattle and New York would cost. It was an impulse decision. No regrets, buuuut it probably didn't bring me any closer to getting my ass on a plane! If nothing's booked by Sept. 15, I'll probably call it a day. I was poring over the HBO jobs site. Lots of good opportunities. Did you check it out, Mabs?
i have an article in a magazine SOMEWHERE that tells of a website with airfares 50-75% off... ill have to find it...
Yes, please, CQ! Find it! And quick!

A belated 'Happy Birthday', Elphie! Hope you had a fab day.
And Patronus, while Tiff's recap is partly accurate, there are a few little details she's missed out. Mainly regarding her odor of fishing trawlers and the like...but maybe I'll fill you in later. After dinner - I wouldn't want to spoil your appetite!
And how come Mabel gets to specify her college on her own terms if she so chooses, yet mine is revealed to all the world? Blatant favoritism!

P.S. I've heard of Kate Bush. Very high voice, right? Some hippie-type aquaintances are mildly obsessed with her.

That picture was *just* what I needed right now, thanks Ellie.
*throws up on computer*
Did you see her meltdown on Larry King? I couldn't get the video to load on my computer but I read a transcript. Sounded like she was a bit...emotional.
And why haven't U2 announced an MSG opener for November?? They've announced a few others by now, just not my show! *whines* I don't want to end up with Kings of Leon again or, even worse, someone like Celine.

Hi, Elphie...I was just wondering where you had got to!
I did see Larry King and she was terrific, I thought! Try to load it again, 'cos I don't think the transcript really does it justice! She was emotional, yes, but who can blame her? Better than being a robot. Go Celine!, I say.
I suppose she deserves props for donating $1 million to relief efforts.
Are you back at school yet, Ellie?
And I recommend that everyone see The Woman in White when it opens because I've been listening to the London cast recording and I love it. I am an ALW fan, but I bet those of you who aren't so crazy about him will still enjoy it.

I like Evita and Phantom, but not sure about WIW. I'm sure the music's lovely, but is the actual story any good? Are you quite sure ALW hasn't lost his touch?
Not back at school yet - can't wait, though!
*grits teeth* I told Ellie she could post ONE photo of Celine, since she's now in my good books, what with her Larry King meltdown and all. (And moreso because idiots like a certain someone who said, "What does she care [about the New Orleans victims]? She's Canadian." is making me over-identify with our patriotic similarities!
Reading the transcript, I thought she seemed a bit wacko too, but watching it on TV makes a lot more sense. She doesn't seem as psychotic when you see her on screen...it was sort of a gradual meltdown, and Larry was being an insensitive moron. ("Do you want to sing a song for us?" while she's weeping! Idiot.)
I skipped WiW when I was in London. When does it open in New York?
I hope JoJo opens for U2 in November. I really do.
"I'm sure the music's lovely, but is the actual story any good?"
The story is amazing. I read the novel and I couldn't put it down. Seriously. I absolutely love the story. Which is pretty cool considering it (the novel) was written 150 years ago. And ALW hasn't lost his touch.
WiW opens in NY in October for previews (around the 12th maybe?) and November 18th (I think) officially. I'm seeing it the Sunday after Thanksgiving.
"I hope JoJo opens for U2 in November. I really do."
Oh yeah? Well...well...*sputters* at least I won't get stuck with Keane.
I'm an ALW sucker, I must admit. I've liked a few of his musicals a lot (I'm a POTO, JCS and Evita junkie). When does it open?
And you SO did not bring up K***e.

But how closely is the musical based on the book?
What would you say is the standout song from the score? The 'Don't Cry For Me, Argentina', if you will.
If Keane open in October (and it's official, isn't it?), I am not sitting through it. I'll be at the bar illegally sipping over-priced drinks, until HobbitMan has stopped whining.
Care to join me, Whiff? ( First round's on you!)
Did you just refer to Mr. Keane Guy (a.k.a. "Martin-lite") as HobbitMan? You are my new favorite person of the day, SmEllie. And yes, we shall be getting drunkified while Nic's bobbing her head to...to...(I was going to name a K***e song, but I realized I can't discern them from Coldplay ones...) I'll even let you sip on my Cosmo, as long as you bring the Purell and fix up your cold sore problems!
"When does it open?"
I answered what I thought in the post before yours, but I guess you were too upset by the Keane reminder to see that.
"But how closely is the musical based on the book?"
It differs a little; the book is 600+ pages, so obviously they had to cut down a lot. It's not a bad adaptation, though, considering the length and complexity of the novel. It seems slightly less suspenseful.
"What would you say is the standout song from the score?"
I don't know about that. I love "All for Laura." "You Can Get Away with Anything" is another great song. "I Believe my Heart" seems like it'll be a favorite for many, although it doesn't appeal to me as much as some of the others.
And Keane isn't that bad, gals! They've got some catchy tunes!
You're actually right. I was so blinded by your below-the-belt comment about K***e that I didn't notice your answer about WiW! What would you compare the WiW music to, style-wise? (POTO or JCS or Tech. Dream Coat?)
I wonder if Mabs or Ellie would be up for a New York Rangers game? Or is hockey an American no-no?

[talking sloooowly] Well, Dubya, it's sort of like baseball, except there's more than one 'bat' and we swing at the ground instead of the air. And the players are much, much hotter.
Sold?

Hot men? I'm there!
But really...sport? Hockey? What?
*groans* I love music, but I'm terrible at analysing and comparing it. I guess the score is like PotO (at least out of the ones you mentioned). I dunno. And it takes a few listens to get into it.
And since I won't be there, go ahead and drag Ellie and Mabel to a hockey game! Knowing that I won't have to sit through that will make me feel a little bit better about not being there with you gals.
I'm off to class!
ETA: Hot men? Sorry, I can't let that slide by. You can't even see them! They're covered in padding and have helmets on! At least in baseball they wear tight pants and you can see their faces!

Have fun in class, #1! (And yes, in baseball you can see their faces. That's the problem.)
Be back in a mo'! Just dumped dinner (literally), and I need to scrounge something to eat.
So, any news on NYC, Tiff? While I admire your generosity in donating so much money, I must admit that I did have a bit of a *headdesk* moment. Do you think it's still doable? Maybe you should hop on selling those tix (and why not toss in a kidney while you're at it)??
I'm all moved in. My roommate seems very nice. Much better than the array of nympho/germaphobe/pathological liar/fruitarian/strippers that I'm usually stuck with!! That's always a good sign. My room is small-ish. Suckage point #1 is the serious lack of storage space for clothes. We've each got 3 drawers in this built-in desk thing against the wall in the bedroom...and that's it. We usually have a 4 drawer bureau-type thing, a tall/thin closet to hang stuff in/put shoes or a laundry bag in, and a short 3 drawer end table, and a coat closet. Oh, I guess we do have a coat closet, so we have to share that, stuffing in all hang-able clothes and coats. I guess it's not so terrible, but I'm going to have my folks ship down some sweaters and stuff later, when it gets colder, and those will take up a hell of a lot of space.
I'm actually kind of looking forward to TWiW. I'm not a big ALW fan, but I have a friend that saw it in London and said it was great. I hope they have some sort of rush...I'd imagine they would, as the Marquis is one cavernous theater.
Anyway, I'm off to see if the bookstore is open so I can see what the damage will be.
Yeah, I am still mulling over my TWiW as well. I just can't make a decision on it.
I'll likely skip it.
Update on the NYC front: Called up my travel agent today and booked my flights! I'm scheduled to arrive early in NYC on 10/7 and leave early on 10/12. Nothing final until I pay tomorrow, but at least my foot's jamming the door (and confirming the price I got!). The ticket's non-refundable, so...
...I wish someone would put out an APB on Sivon (aka Broadway_Star_Tomorrow) so I can see if I can squat at her place for a few days and extend my visit until 10/14 (or, at the very least, divide the time between Mab's place and hers and still leave on 10/12). It's making me aggro. Would it seem stalker-ish to leave a message at the theatre she's performing in tonight?
And that's what's going on on the New York front. I think I can stil afford to go, Mabs. It's just a question of actually appeasing the parents so they don't think I'm wasting my money. I actually want to go on some interviews while I'm there, but I'm not going to get much done on the career-front if I'm only in town on a long weekend. Oh God, why can't I just get this over with?? I'm about to have a mini-meltdown.
Yay for having a normal roomie! Is she going to mind having me around for a few days? Define a 'small' dorm room. Will the three of us be spooning on a twin bed?? (And Ellie will videotape?)
I'm on 'The Cleaner' at 6am tomorrow, so I'll be calling it quits early tonight.
