Well, that's just the risk I'm willing to make to meet our dear Tiffy!!

Uh oh, I sense potential problems on the rommate front...VERY LONG!!!Tell me if I'm overreacting here.

So, I thought the bf situation might become a situation, as he was here all day Monday while I was moving in, and he was here when I came in Tuesday morning (didn't spend Monday night here). But, I figured, whatever, I wasn't here, knock yourself out. So, yesterday, he was pretty much here whenever she was. I went out for most of the afternoon, but I think they were gone that whole time too. I went grocery shopping and they came in shortly after I got in. He was here all evening, playing video games and stuff...ok, fine. We go the the floor meeting, come back, and he comes back down, and they watched TV (my TV, mind you...I fully expect to share it, but I'm just sayin') while we were chatting online and I made Pat some CDs. Whatever. So, I've got a 9am class, and I was coming off 2 SH*Tty nights' sleep, and I went to bed around 11:30. At midnight, he goes into the bathroom and takes a shower...in our room. He lives four flights up! Why aren't you taking a shower in your own room? It's not like he's living in the Brooklyn dorms (it would still be annoying, but still, wtf?)...then he leaves, lets himself back in and spends the night w/ the roomie on the bottom bunk and quickly falls asleep, snoring. So, I was livid and wide awake, due to excessive, loud snoring, until at least 3am (that was the last time I checked my cell phone for the time). So, he's basically living here and keeping his clothes in his own room upstairs (sweet deal for his roommate...maybe I should move in there?). He's got a towel here, a toothbrush, shampoo...the whole nine yards. I'm sorry, but I signed up for a double. I don't expect her to never have guests or anything (that'd be ridiculous), but I've pretty much got another roommate now. I'm paying for a double, and you know, I'd kind of like to get what I (er, my parents) paid for.

I only had a minute to chat w/ her before I had to go to class and she had to get ready for work, but I said that we'd have to all get together and sort something out. What do you think is reasonable? She asked if it'd be ok for him to spend the night sometimes. I don't really want him to (he's nice and everything, but come on). What would you say if fair? Once a week? Assuming I get Theater Talk or AMC works out (or maybe even Inside the Actors Studio that's going to be filming at PU now) I'm going to be gone pretty much every day from 9am until 6 or 9pm. I really just want to come home, get a bite to eat, do some reading/writing, and go to bed. I don't want to deal w/ roommie and the bf as a constant factor. If they wanted to live together permanently, they should have gotten an apartment, or one of them should have gotten a single, right? Am I being a bitch/totally out of line? Even though I don't want him here that much, shouldn't she be at his place at least 1/2 the time? I don't want him essentially living here 3-4 days/week, but I don't think it's fair that his roommate's basically got a single (well, assuming he has a double...think I might have to check that out).

I've been walked all over for the past 3 years, and I'm sorry that one of my nicer roommates is going to have to bear the brunt of my pent up annoyance over being taken advantage of by a slew of previous rommates, but I really think I've got to put my foot down.

I think that you have every right to be annoyed, Mabel!

However, I think you should tread carefully rather than being too confrontational. You say she's nice enough - so maybe she'd respond better to a reasoned calm request better than you laying down the law. You have a point to make, but make it nicely! You don't want to lose a potential friend, or worse - create a potential enemy.

Also, I don't think it's a good idea to set limit on the boyfriend's 'sleepovers'. I think a looser approach may be best - perhaps suggest "occasionally". If things don't work out, then you can get a bit stricter with the boundaries.

Hope that helps! <font color=red>Big Apple, here I come! (Almost.) Good luck, anyway!

Glad to see all your arrangement have been made for New York, Tiff & Ellie - I'm quite envious, truth be told! Once is most definitely not enough to see U2 live, and MSG is one magnificent venue. I saw Madonna there last year, and it was phenomonal! I may be going to NY again later this year to see family, and I'm seriously considering revolving the trip around the November shows...it's totally worth it, right? I wonder if I'll be able to find reasonably priced tickets on eBay - I assume it IS sold out? Oh well, it's only an idea.

Ooh, Jez, you should definitely try to come in November! Then you, Pat, and I will have our own little BWW contingent at the U2 concert. It'll make me less bummed about not being there in October. <font color=red>Big Apple, here I come! (Almost.) And I'm sure you'd be able to find tickets on Interference (well, for 11/21 I bet). I'm still looking for 11/22.
Anyone heard anything about openers for MSG November?

Sorry about the roomie situation, Mabs. Hopefully it'll get better; that was just the first night, right? They're probably just catching up with each other after the summer. Maybe just agree with him staying over on weekends and see how that goes for a while? Tell you it makes you uncomfortable; I'm sure she'll be understanding. I would probably be pissed as well.

1. Early wrap time today. Woo! I think I've got heatstroke, but I'm just happen to have only worked 13 hours today! Thank GOD! Unfortunately, it's another 6am call tomorrow. <font color=red>Big Apple, here I come! (Almost.)

2. I'm having panic attacks over this New York thing. Not in terms of backing out, but in terms of planning. Here is the dilemma:

I can get roundtrip airfare between Seattle and JFK for C$309 (incl. taxes, etc.). I'll have to take a shuttle down from Vancouver to Seattle, which will cost US$53 (=C$64ish). The shuttle times are sort of crappy in terms of working with my flight itinerary, and since both of the flights are direct flights, I'm not expecting much in the way of delays. Right now, the shuttle going to Seattle will arrive at their airport at 7:30pm, but my flight isn't until 11:30pm. The shuttle coming back to Vancouver will leave Seattle at 1pm, but I arrive at 10am. That's 7 hours of waiting (six, if we consider I needed 1 hour before departure to check into Seattle), and with the unreliable border lineups and whatnot, it seems a bit inconvenient.

On the other hand, I can get a direct flight (on a better airline - Cathay Pacific) from Vancouver to New York departing on Oct 7 (and arriving at 9:30pm, as opposed to my overnight flight from Seattle, which would arrive at 7:30am) and returning Oct 15 at 11:15pm (which sort of makes up for the time I'm losing when I arrive on the 7th). Thing is, it'll cost me C$513 (incl. taxes), which is about C$140 more than what the Seattle flight and shuttle will cost me.

So the question is, is it worth spending the extra $140 but having a better and more reliable airline and not having to bust my ass to Seattle and back? (Keep in mind the Vancouver airport is 10 minutes from my house.) Will $140 be the breaking point??

What do you think? I need your advice stat!

(And now I'll respond to Mabel's post.)

First to the roommie "situation." I'll certainly try to be as even-keeled about this as possible, and I'm sure a lot of it had to do w/ post-summer catching up, etc...though the full array of bathroom gear and the mini suitcase full of clothes that he's left does make me think that they were planning on milking this for all it's worth. And what I was getting at w/ the once a week bit, was more just a general idea of an approx time that seems quasi-reasonable. Bottom line, I don't want another full-time roommate. Sorry, folks. I guess we'll see what happens after we chat. I just didn't want to let this go, because I've done that before...saying, oh, I'm sure it'll just be an occasional thing...whatever that thing may be, a bf over all the time, people being freakishly filthy (and I'm certainly not the cleanest person in the world, so that's definitely saying something), or whatever. Anyway, I usually let it go, and say next time I'll say something, and before you know it, I find myself reasoning that "oh, it's the middle of October, and the semester's clicking along, I'll just wait it out," and I end up letting things slip further out of hand. And I'm sure the fact that I'm running on about 10 hours of sleep in the past 72 hours doesn't make me the most cheery, accomodating person in sorting this stuff out.

Anyway, I'm just back from the Coldplay concert. We had nosebleeds, but they really weren't that bad at all. 423, I think. They were certainly high, but we were at a pretty good angle to the stage, so that was a huge plus. Rilo Kiley, the opening band was pretty good (though I felt kind of bad for them, because there weren't many people there at all). Actually, the arena looked fairly empty right until they put the lights out for Coldplay. I was sitting there thinking "sold out my ass!" Then, as soon as they turned the lights on w/ Coldplay it was packed!!! I don't know how they all filled in so fast. It was rather strange.

The setlist, I think, was:

Square One
Politik
Yellow
God Put A Smile Upon Your Face
Speed Of Sound
Low
A Rush of Blood to the Head
Everything's Not Lost
White Shadows
The Scientist
Til Kingdom Come
Ring of Fire (Johnny Cash Cover)
Don't Panic
Clocks
Talk

Encore:
Swallowed In The Sea
In My Place
Fix You

I guess they played Green Eyes last night instead of Don't Panic. I would have LOVED to have heard that!

More later.

That sounds like a pretty good setlist! There are some great classics in there. The only one from X&Y that I would have been bummed about not being there is "A Message." "Til Kindom Come" going into "Ring of Fire" sounds cool. I'm glad you had fun!

Tiff, if I were you, I would spring for the Vancouver flights. That's a lot of time that you'd be spending in the airport if you did the Seattle thing, and it really doesn't sound like much fun. You might as well splurge and make it the best trip possible.

OMFG, Gwen Stefani is doing a show in Vancouver in November, and tickets go on sale this Saturday.

a) This makes the decision to not see Destiny's Child that much easier. (Gwen's tickets are cheaper, and I WORSHIP Gwen whereas I'm merely slightly more than 'meh' to Beyonce and her background singers.)

b) This makes the decision to leave from Seattle or Vancouver that much harder. The show is going to cost me around $60, which on top of the unanticipated $140 makes $200 that I didn't expect to blow! Mmm...okay, so Seattle it is?

(BTW, for those following at home, I calculated that with a 4-hour bus ride each way to Seattle plus the 6 hours of waiting at an airport, that's really only $10/hr that I would spend to save on toddling around doing nothing! Sooo...where does that leave me?)

Coldplay sounded like a good show, Mabs! Who'd you go with? Was this at MSG?

And I've already discussed the roomie situation with Mabel, so for me to not advise her at length on here isn't an indication of me being selfish. (An idea though - how about I stay for as long with you as her boyfriend stays with her? It would be like three's company! Just...with a fourth wheel. (Him. Not me.)) <font color=red>Big Apple, here I come! (Almost.)

Seriously though, can't he at least be banished to the couch? What if you limit him to, say, one or two nights a week?

I'd love it if I could banish him to the couch, so I wouldn't hear the snoring (maybe I should buy him some of those Breathe Right nasal strips??) He wasn't here last night, and I got a lovely night sleep...well, until the call at 7:30 from my mom asking me where the hell my friend from the concert was (our parents work together, and I guess her father hadn't been able to get in touch w/ her and was getting worried)...I went w/ a friend from home, who goes to school in Rhode Island, and I guess she had an early class that she couldn't miss, so she took a 3am bus back to RI that would get her in in time for someone to pick her up on the way to class (kind of crazy if you ask me) but I did end up getting in touch w/ her and she was in RI, had been fetched, and was safe and sound. I guess the wait was pretty uneventful, other than one odd drunken man that got a little too chatty around 2am.

Coldplay was excellent. They really put on a great show. Great, great energy, which I was kind of surprised about. They had a pretty sripped down set, just a big screen in the back that alternated between having 4 squares of closeups of the band and other random stuff. During White Shadows, they showed the band, but as a negative (you know, like photo negatives) which was kind of cool. Oh, and during In My Place, Chris Martin leaped off the stage, and (w/ a security guy in front of and behind him) ran down along the edge of the floor and up to a little perch in the middle/back of the floor and sang a chunk of the song from there. The crowd went CRAZY!!!

Ooooh!!! And we saw the whole band (minus Chris Martin, of course) just strolling down the street before the show. My friend's train came in at 6, and I was having a hell of a time finding her at Penn. They didn't have what track she arrived at on the screen, and she was telling me on the phone that she was in front of a Hudson News (well, there are about a dozen Hudson News stands at Penn Station!) so it took a while for me to find her, but as fate would have it, by the time we hooked up and walked out, we ran smack into Will, Johnny, and Guy! There was no one really on the street, and I saw Will and Guy walking towards us together, gave my friend a smack and we gawked at them as they walked down the street behind us. Then Johnny Buckland walked right past us and jumped over a little baricade to head backstage, I guess. Of course, I didn't have anything to get signed, and I forgot about my camera in the bag, so it was a bit of a wasted opportunity...but it was very cool to see them, just strolling down the street.

So, Seattle it is, Tiff?? I'm sure it won't be so bad. Just snag a couple of magazines or something, and think about Bono and Gwen and the little sacrifice you're making for them. <font color=red>Big Apple, here I come! (Almost.)

Hope you work things out with your roommate, Mabel. Glad to hear Coldplay were great - pity you didn't see Chris, Gwyneth and Apple!

And oh, one more NZ question, Elphie! There's a singer called Bic Runga who's really big here, and she's from New Zealand...is she actually popular in her home country?

And glad to hear Shortland Street is still going! Love the theme tune - "Is it you or is it me? Lately I've been lost it seems, I think a change is what I need....Shortlaaaaand Street..." <font color=red>Big Apple, here I come! (Almost.)

I knew there was something else about the Coldplay concert I was going to say...On our way out, we were walking down the stairs and there were a couple of British guys chatting behind us. I heard one of them say "That was the best gig I've ever seen," and the other guy asked him if he'd ever seen U2. The first guy said no, he hadn't, so the 2nd guy said, "Well, then I challenge you on that then." <font color=red>Big Apple, here I come! (Almost.)

Mabel, what a shi**y roommate situation.

I agree that treading softly on this is the way to go. The last thing you want to do is create a roommate from hell situation that makes the entire stay together uncomfortable.

You could put in the Falsettos cast recording and have it get "stuck" at the part where Marvin sings "Why is he always here?!!?!?"

Seriously though I think mentioning it intially was a good idea and now see how it plays out. The fact that he wasn't there last night is a pretty good sign, no?

Jezebel, I think it would be cool if you came to town for U2! Tickets are definately sold out, but eBay or Brokers could land you a seat and if you just need one it might not be so bad.

Look for the 11/21 show for sure. I think nearly everyone in this thread is going to be there for that show.

Pat thinks that I'm nearly everyone in this thread. That makes me feel special. All you October people don't matter. <font color=red>Big Apple, here I come! (Almost.)
And Jez, if you happen to find a pair for 11/22 and are looking for someone to take, I'm available. <font color=red>Big Apple, here I come! (Almost.)

That's cool about Coldplay, Mabs! You've already got Guy's autograph, so you only missed out on Will and Johnny. It must have been exciting to see them, though! Was Gwyneth at the concert?

And yep, Jez, Bic Runga is pretty big here. Bic Runga and Anika Moa (y'all should check her out, she's amazing, especially her new cd Stolen Hill) are the pride of New Zealand in the music biz.

Rilo Kiley opened, and I rather liked them. I couldn't make out most of the lyrics, but they were pretty good. I think I'll have to check out their CD(s). The lead singer was a trip. I wish they'd turned on the screens, so I could have seen her getup up close. It looked like she had on hot pants, a bra, and fishnets everywhere else; all the while kicking it in some crazy heels.

It was indeed very cool seeing Johnny and Will. I did a bit of gawking and then they were gone.

I'm still keeping my eyes peeled for a pair of tix for 11/21...just because I'm crazy enough to go to that many shows. I think I need professional help!

On a side note, it's 8 on a Thursday, and I am beyond tired. It's kind sad if I'm in bed by 10pm w/o having class tomorrow or anything.

I've never even heard of Rilo Kiley, but they sound lively enough! Maybe if HobbitMan wore hot pants, a bra, and fishnets it would make K***e vaguely interesting. Is it 100% offical that they'll be opening in October? On all nights?

And I know how you feel about being tired! I'm always tired.

Saving this from teetering onto the 3rd page.

From interference:

Who: Bono & Professor Jeffrey Sachs
What: Inaugaral Daniel Patrick Moynahan Lecture - "The End of Poverty"
When: October 5th, 6:00pm
Where: Skirball Center, Campus of NYU

Who's going, you may ask???

<--------

<font color=red>Big Apple, here I come! (Almost.)

I think Bono's just doing an introduction for Sachs, but I'm sure it'll be interesting anyway. I wonder if I could get reimbursed through Honors? I think they do that sometimes for lectures, etc. Hmmm.

ETA: I don't think it's been confirmed, but I've read that Patti Smith is opening for U2 at MSG in Novmeber.
