(i) Fiona Apple
(ii) Another vote for Adam.
(iii) Definately, Discotheque *
(iv) Not at all. I love Sam Jackson. Overexposed, perhaps - but not overrated.
*I am joking of course. I gotta go with Sunday Bloody Sunday as well.
-Hmmm...I think I'd like a formal (re)teaming of U2 and REM. I know they had that Achtung for the People thing in the 90s, but I don't remember, did they actually perform together or did they just perform a couple of each other's songs? I have a recording of Stipe singing One.
-Awww, I feel bad for Adam, so I'll be a rebel and say Larry. I know it's wrong in so many ways, but I just can't have this be a unanamous Adam bashing. Let's just say he gets the nod for not being festive enough to let loose in the Discotheque music video.
-Sunday Bloody Sunday, I think...and though it certainly isn't the best, I must give some mention to Gloria.
-Yay for Sam Jackson. I love it when he's on Conan. Very, very funny. Epitome of cool...Yay.
Just back from the Bono Sachs lecture at NYU. Excellent! I'll post more later...along w/ the Pacino review. But for now, I've got to get something to eat. 9:17, and I've had a bowl of ceral and a turkey sandwich all day. No snacks or anything!
Oh, phew, Pat! You scared me with that mention of Discotheque.
Mabs, you must be starving!
I just ate a whole package of cookies and I feel like I'm going to throw up now.
I want to hear all about the lecture!
What does everyone think of Bono's chances at winning the Nobel Prize?
I was a bit famished indeed, Elph! What kind of cookies did you have? Yummy NZ cookies? I've got some delish mint-cream cheese brownies. If you're lucky Tiff, I won't have scarfed them all by Friday.
The lecture was great. I picked up my ticket around 5:15 and saw a crowd gathered down the block, so I waited for Bono to come in. He got there at about 10 to 6 and signed a bunch of stuff. I didn't get anything signed though. I brought my Bomb book thing, but even one person deep behind the baricade, I couldn't get it up there to be signed. I was a bit miffed by the slew of NYU students that kind of shoved their way inside the baricades (I was actually rather shocked that security was so lax w/ them!) and got stuff signed...namely their notebooks, because they were just stopping by passing on the street.
Bono only spoke for 15-20 minutes, introducing Jeffrey Sachs. He was great though. Funny, engaging, etc. And Jeffrey Sachs' lecture was just wonderful. Definitely a lot to digest, but powerful, depressing, and inspiring at the same time.
I waited outside after the lecture as well, but Bono didn't sign this time...not particularly surprising. He did wave and flash the peace sign though...oh, and Edge came out before him and waved to everyone. I didn't get any pix, because my camera is really crappy, and I figured other people on interference will have better shots.
I think Bono's chances are pretty slim. I don't think they'll give it to a celeb, considering most people are so annoyed when they take up a cause...which is sad, because it seems like he's done some really great work this year. I honestly am not particularly well versed in many of the other nominees work/contributions, so I don't really know. It'd certainly be wild if he did though! They made mention of it several times tonight. Sachs said he should be up for 4 Nobel Prizes: Physics (just joking, saying something about bending the divide between the left and right and trying to bring them together, etc) Economics, Literature, and finally the Nobel Peace Prize.
Very interesting evening. I'm glad Bono was there, because I probably wouldn't have gone otherwise...I'm very glad I made it. Definitely well worth it.
ETA: I forgot...After the lecture, they presented Bono and Sachs w/ NYU jackets. Bono immediately took off his jacket and put it on, as did Sachs, and they kind of posed, showing off the backs of the jackets (New York University)...oh, and some crazy person yelled out for them to play One Tree Hill on Saturday...if only!!!
Sounds great, Mabs! I'm sorry you couldn't get an autograph, but it must have been so cool to hear him speak.
I ate a package of TimTams. They're always talking about them at setlist parties on Interference, and now I know why! They are SO good. I eat them all the time. I'll bring some back for you!
One last post before shoving off to bed. I was a bit bummed about being so close to getting Bono's autograph and missing out, but no biggie. I think Tiff and I are going to give it a whirl at MSG sometime this week. Ellie, you and your Yaley friends up for it on Sat? Oh, nevermind. I think I heard they usually show up around 2, and I've got that NYU class until 3:30 on Saturday (still need to find out exactly where that is!)...Anyway, I was glad to see some guy a couple rows in front of me at the lecture got an old 45 of Out of Control signed! I'd be very curious to see how much that baby is worth, considering the sleeve said U2-3, so it must've been from 79 or so! How lucky!!!
And I would absolutely adore some TimTams. I don't now what they are, but if they're good enough to get you to eat a whole package, that's a big ol' thumbs up in my book!!
You're doing a spankin' good job at SLEEPING, Nic!
(BTW, good news and bad news - good news - I got an interview with the Rent tour producer!! Bad news - he wants the interview on Sunday morning. Gun? Head? Please? But I'd rather this than not getting an interview at all! I just don't wanna sacrifice Bono!)
Re: Bono's chance at the Nobel - slim, but more likely than Bob Geldof, because Bob and Bono are equally recognized as the faces of Live 8, but Bono's had a more consistent record of activism.
What the hell are these TimTam things?
I know, it's very sad, Tiff...but to be fair, when I left you on AIM, I was going to finish a chapter, not leaving to go to bed, so I just popped back on after finishing reading for the night...so there!
I would think that Bono would have better shot than Geldof this year...I mean they both contributed a great deal to the organization of Live8; Bono made great efforts to bring debt relief in Africa attention to the attention of World leaders for the G8 summit; he and Ali launched an eco-(and by eco I mean both enviromnentally and economically) friendly clothing line; he has served as the front man for the One campaign, for which has registered some 2 million people, etc, etc. I still don't think it'll happen, but I guess we'll see tomorrow.
I leave for the airport in 40 minutes!
(i) Who would you most like to see U2 collaborate with?
Well Paul McCartney's already done, so I'd say...Gwen Stefani? Or would that be weird? (Maybe if they go back to their 90s heyday!)
(ii) You're Paul McGuinness. Times are hard. You find you have no option but to fire one of the boys to cut costs. Who goes?
Larry. I would've said Adam, but the taking-a-bullet-for-Bono story at the R&RHoF has endeared him to me for life.
(iii) What's your favorite U2 album opener?
Zoo Station. I crank it up. Awesome.
(iv) Samuel L. Jackson. Over-rated?
Totally. Good in Pulp Fiction, meh in everything else. Doesn't warrant the ego he has.
Technically, I guess U2've collaborated w/ Gwen as well, as she joined them on stage for What's Going On? a few times on Elevation. I don't know if I have any of those boots or not? Hmmm.
Have a safe trip, Tiff. Get your ass on that plane!!!
That's true - I don't think I've ever heard it. I would still kill for an Elevation DVD with both of them! KILL!
Oops, I think I missed my shuttle.
Actually, I'm having second thoughts about this trip. Perhaps you should just sell my tickets, Nic.
Just kidding! See you soon!
Not funny! NOT FUNNY!!!
At least if you did miss that shuttle you can skip BB and go later, right?! Hope your iPod's charged!!!
iPod is charged and I'm heading out the door now for the airport! BYE!!!
Bye, Tiff!! See in the am!
ETA: My new avatar cracks me up!!! *pats self on back*
heehee. Great av, mabs!
Tiff, when you see this message you'll be in New York, so WELCOME TO NYC! (am I allowed to 'welcome' someone if I'm not there?)
I'm so jealous of y'all. Think of me while you're watching the boys perform!
TimTams are amazing. They are also the bane of my existence because I can't stop eating them and I've gained so much weight since I got here. They have a chocolate cookie, a layer of chocolate icing, another chocolate cookie, all covered in milk chocolate. That's the best description I can give, but it doesn't do them justice. Jez, where are you? Do they have TimTams in Ireland?
Can you folks remind me which concerts you're seeing? I mean which dates? Ellie, you're going on Saturday, right?
Hey Elph! We'll SO be thinking of you this week. It just doesn't seem right that you aren't here with us.
How not thrilled am I that they've just released all these frigging warnings for the subway!?!?! Boooo!!! Ordinarily I'd take this opportunity to stay huddled away downtown (which would actually be rather easy, since I've got a load of stuff to do), but thanks to Tiff and U2, I shall be forced to overcome my leeriness, buck up, and face the turnstiles. I'm sure I'll feel fine after that ride tomorrow morning up to the Shubert (always gotta get that first ride under your belt...it was the same going back on the subway after the London attacks). I'd almost rather they didn't tell us, even if there are rumblings about something happening. You can't do anything about it. You can't stop someone from walking on a subway train w/ a bomb in their backpack. And you can't stay huddled up at home and not get around the city (and I can't afford to take cabs), so why bother? Why freak people out if there's really nothing that can be done about it? Yeah, I guess it's a good idea to have people keeping their eyes peeled, but still.
Elph, Tiff, Ellie and I are going on Saturday, and then Tiff and I are going again on Monday and next Friday (MSGV...or is it VI w/ May??) Whatever it is, it should be AMAZING!!!
Poor Tiff, terrorist warnings and rain all week. What a vacation!! ...OK, this subway thing can't be that important. CNN 's big story of the hour is TomKat's freaky baby.
Guess that's it for now...I'm so excited for Conan tonight!! I've got my tape all cued up.

hehe, of course elph. welcome away!
and from ME: WELCOME TO NEW YORK CITYYYYY! *waves from my longgiland house 20 miles from you* just look out the window and admire the LIGHTS!
AAAHHHH!!!! Edge is doing In the Year 2000 on Conan!!! This is going to be classic!!!
ETA: A quick review of Conan for Elphie, since she missed it. They did 4 songs: ABoY, Orginal (w/ strings), a BEAUTIFUL acoustic version of Stuck in a Moment (w/ Larry, Adam, and Conan's brass section coming in at the end) and ended w/ Vertigo (which ended up getting cut off for Carson Daly.
They did In the Year 2000 w/ Edge...VERY funny (and Bono even came out at the end of the segment to do a couple). Then, they interviewed all 4 guys, which ended up being kind of awkward. Bono didn't seem very into it. He was much more animated at the NYU lecture. I wonder if he was nervous? And they had another segment w/ just Bono devoted entirely to discussion of the One Campaign, Bono's work, the Nobel Peace Prize, etc. *thumbs up to Conan*
That's it. I'm off to bed, since I have to get up at the ass crack of dawn to get in line for SRO for Spamalot tomo...er this morning. Night all. I'll post a quickie tomorrow when I retrieve Tiff. I hope she made her flight. It was really looking like it would be a close call w/ Blood Brothers in Seattle.
Thanks for the recap, Mabs! Sounds like a good set, I can't wait to watch it in November.
Fu*k! I missed Conan. I knew I was supposed to Tivo something.
Jealous you are in the city, Tiff! Have a great time guys!
Hola! It's Tiff. I've hijacked Nicole's account again! Where's Satan and #2Elphie?
Ha...ha?
Oh, I jest. But it is me, and I made it here in one piece (unfortunately for Nic).
yay! Have a great time at Spamalot tonight!
ETA: If possible, could you gals check out the Box Office line at the U2 concerts, particularly on Friday? Like take note of how long the line is and when people got there? I'm just wondering how hard it'll be to get tickets through the B.O. the day of the show.

Oops, sorry I didn't read your post until now. Well, I drove by MSG today around 10:30am and there were only MAYBE 30 people in the GA line and really nobody at the BO (unless they were just milling around and hovering). I would say getting there around noon is a safe bet, but I may be able to tell you better tomorrow. Nic and I are thinking of bringing our LPs (I picked up a WAR LP today!!) to MSG and trying to get them signed - either before sound check or after the show. Dunno how much time I'll have. But you know, I think on Interference, they said 10/7 were on TicketMaster today? (I just saw the title, "10/7 tickets on Ticketmaster" but I didn't click.)
Oh no, Patronus! It's okay, I missed it too, but it seems like the interview was kind of SH*T and Bono was having an off-night, Mr. Congeniality-wise.
Toodle-oo!
BTW, *****SET LIST SPOILERS*****
Tonight's set list was pretty great, although I really dislike that The Ocean has become a fixture. There were a couple of medleys (I'm not a 'Hands That Built America' fan though), and Fast Cars AND Crumbs were played! I won't tell Nic though (as she snoozes) since she'll be choked that it won't be played tonight then. They also closed with '40' and 'With Or Without You' instead of 'Yahweh', which makes me happy, but I never figured WOWY being a real closing song.
Tata for now!
Up at an ungodly hour (especially after being up until 4 or so!), and dragging poor Tiff around w/ me! This is like my week of poor timing. Let's have a special class at NYU when Tiff's here. Let's have "U2 Week" fall right at the beginning of midterms. Let's have a mandatory floor meeting (complete w/ fines for missing) announced yesterday for 10/10 at 10, when we've got our 200-level seats that we bought in MARCH!!! Need I go on?
2U was...amusing. I think it got us extra psyched for tonight though, so that's a good thing. I'm sure we'll post more on this later, but for now...there were times when they'd be totally fine, sound pretty decent, etc...then, all of a sudden, "Bono" would just hideously miss a note. Seriously, to the point where I pulled my glasses off my head at one point to see if the glass wasn't cracked! Bad will seriously never be the same for me! His "wide awakes" were cringeworthy! *shudder*
Anyway, gotta go. Have to finish my cereal and take a quick shower/be out of the door by quarter of 9.
Technically, I guess U2've collaborated w/ Gwen as well, as she joined them on stage for What's Going On? a few times on Elevation. I don't know if I have any of those boots or not? Hmmm.
If you still have the Staples Center Elevation show that I was at (sadly, I fear it was one of the lost ones) she did What's Going On? With U2 there.
(Speaking of which, did you ever try going to the post office to see if they have packages that had problems or anything like that?)
It was pretty cool. In fact, I'd forgotten about it until now.
Glad to hear you guys are having fun!
