Are you guys also trying to rush for Rent, or just increasing Patty's chance of getting picked?
And surely you're all going to the Rent midnight screening, correct??
The plan is for all of us to buy SRO to Rent, but the entries in the lotto are all for Pat and *A*, unless we somehow pull multiple wins.
I bought the tickets for the tribe to hit the movie at midnight earlier today.
Sounds great. Who's doing the sightseeing around Central Park etc? I still say, P and *A*, that Chinatown and Greenwich is worth an afternoon of walking around. It's just fun and lively, and has some cheap, cheap, cheap deals on clothes, accessories and food (the latter especially, which Nicole was very happy about).

Hi Tiff!
Re: shopping... like shopping shopping or Chinatown shopping? Cuz not so much on the former, but on the latter I could do with a fake Prada bag or something... Though I wouldn't say no if I found a decently priced pair of True Religion jeans...
I think Stephen has rounded up about a bajillion people to try the Rent lotto for us, but it would be awesome if more than one of us won so we could make a thing of it.
Sorry for the incoherent post... it's late!
Chinatown shopping! So much fun! Nic and I were telling Stephen that wandering around, finding deals on Canal Street was actually one of the funnest parts of my trip. The adventure to actually get a fake Prada bag (like I finally did, after 5 different voyages into alleys, apartments, office buildings and rundown warehouses) was almost more fun than the bag itself! Also, it seems like the vendors (predominantly Asian) marked up the prices more for white people because they knew they'd pay more than Asian customers for the bag - so stick to your guns and bargain low. They'll give it to you, more often than not. At one of the places, the vendor bargained with this woman and got from $60 down to a "low" price of $40 and she was thrilled, but I managed to get my Prada from the same guy starting at $45 down to $15. (And I treasure it!)
Pat, I saw this and thought of you.
Dancing Barefoot poll...
Nic: How exciting that there is even a discussion. At least I know I am not the only person who'd like to hear.
Tiff: Just another example of the strife the white man suffers while trying to get a cheap bag.
MOTHERF*CKER!!! It's supposed to rain on Monday now. So now I'm looking at hours in line w/ rain...in the cold. BLAST! The things I do for you, U2! I'm going to be sick over my damn vacation.
Mabel, I always forget that your av is not just a really fat dog. I have seen hundreds of posts from you and everytime I think "fat dog, wait cat ear, no that's a cat, and a dog, funny" I am that sad about remembering things. End of random comments.
I also love U2, but I have never seen them live. I thought about getting tickets but it was just too much cash.
It was funny watching my sister's husband bargain on a Louis Viton from the street, at first the guy was obviously "Southern tourist, I will get lots of cash." Dustin goes "$20" man "$65" "20" "45" nope 20, and the man wound up giving to him and throwing in another bag in the end.
Yeah, gotta love the naugty pets! When I went the the BWW Happy Hour, everyone was just like "Mabel? Mabel...OH! With the dog and cat avatar!"
Canal St. w/ the knock-off bags was definitely good times, I must stay. Though I almost had a panic attack when they whisked Tiff into that first random building and she was gone for 15-20 minutes. I was kind of freaking out, obsessively checking my phone for the time or some panicky text message. Twas an adventrue, for sure.
I've always loved U2, but they got me seriously hooked after their free concert last year in Brooklyn. I'd never seen them in concert before that, but boy have I made up for lost time in the past year! Oh well, I suppose it's a somewhat more healthy way of blowing my extra cash than the typical college senior pastime of getting hammered every other night of the week. At least that's what I'll tell myself.
FANTASTIC! Rain on the one day of the week that I essentially have a free day. Sounds PERFECT!
I am thinking of going down to Ellen to do standby since Rent is on that day. Would that be a complete fruitless waste of time?
Well, I'd say there will be a whole hell of a lot of people. I'd say get there as early as possible, and with any luck, if it's totally not do-able, maybe there'll at least be someone there in charge to let you know that they aren't giving out standby (or they're only giving away 36 *cough* like The View *cough* and there isn't any point in waiting around).
I'm so not thrilled about the rain. As of right now it's saying occasional showers, so maybe it won't be so terrible. We'll see I guess. I'll wait to see the forecast for the 21st on Sunday or something before I totally start freaking out.
Yeah, that first building was sort of shady. This Thai woman whisks me quickly waaay down Canal Street with Nicole trailing behind and we stop at the graffiti-filled door of this ridiculously rundown I-don't-even-know-what-you'd-call-it-but-I'm-thinking-it's-a-squatter's-paradise, which she swings open and is like, "Go upstairs." And Nicole's all, "Er...do you want me to go up with you?" in a total "Please say no, you get killed on your own, 'k?" voice So I tell her to wait downstairs and if I'm not back in 30 minutes...call someone. So I'm led up this flickery-lit narrow set of stairs, and she leads me through two doors and I enter this fairly large room with literally HUNDREDS of styles of bags adorning the walls. It was sort of like I'd entered an illegal heaven. And there are two Chinese guys sitting on the ground beside this pile of bags they were doing inventory for, and every time I'd reach for my pocket, or my watch, or my bag, this one guy's hand would keep diving underneath the pile - so I'm thinking the guy was either armed or had a walkie-talkie to get me finished off. (They were pleasant enough though - we made small talk!)
And in the end I came out empty handed and Nicole said that she'd panicked when that woman had left the building without saying a word and I wasn't with her. (Panicked or was relieved, Nic?)
Well, I actually figured I should have gone in w/ you, which is why I joined you on all of the other escapades...though the subway one looked really sketch. I think you would have been on your own there. I TOTALLY freaked out when the woman that brought you in there came out alone! I was positive you were being assaulted and I'd never see you again. And that crazy woman that worked outside selling watches who kept yelling at me to quit loitering didn't help matters any. She was crazy!
So, basically...for a good time, go to Chinatown for $3.50 lunch and good times bag hunting! Fun times shall be had by all, even if (like me) you aren't really up on the novelty of having a knock off bag. I seriously had no idea what Tiff was looking for, but I had a grand ol' time. The only thing I could help on was feeling up the pleather. That one woman was so funny: "If you want real leather, go to Macy's!" Who would've thought that the bag hunting and running around w/ "Hunter the psychotic limo driver's" jumbo umbrella in the pouring rain would end up being the highlights of the week?!?!
ETA: I think my neighbors have anger management issues. I've got some crazy screaming going on over there! And every weekend (like clockwork) one of the guys is in there SCREAMING at his girlfriend who ends up bawling her eyes out. These people have problems.
Oh! Which reminds me - your guys's one day of rain next week isn't get an ounce of sympathy from me.
*phlegmy cough*
Yeah, well, it'd be nice if it wasn't going to be Monday or Tuesday for the day of rain! I'm trying to scheme some sort of game plan for what to do in line/bring. I was freezing just walking from class back to my place this afternoon. Hours of being out in the cold is not going to be fun...though if it were at least supposed to be sunny, if the line happened to not be in the shade, I'm sure that would have helped a lot too. Oh well, beggers can't be choosers. I've got a GA and I'll just have to suck it up with the wait. (But yesterday was just SO BEAUTIFUL!!!)
Oh, U2 are going to be on 60 Minutes this Sunday at 7, btw.
Bono And The Christian Right
Thanks for the update. It would be tragic if Bono calls you up on stage and you're inhaling your snot into the microphone while he's serenading you! Surely if you get there a few hours early and make friends with the people around you, they'll be understanding if you wanna walk into, like, Kmart to warm up a bit? Bring a couple of garbage bags - one to sit on and one to put on top of your blanket so you don't get soaked.
Eh, I'm giving up on the whole plucking up on stage business. They seem to have stopped playing [that song] and he seems to be bringing a bunch of kids on stage lately. Boy, the kiddies w/ GA have it made. They get automatic entry into the ellipse, and getting yanked up on stage on top of that. Good deal!
I think I'll try to run some stuff back to my room in the late afternoon/early evening. They don't seem to be coming out to sign much anymore, so I think I'll just skip bring my album/waiting by the barricades. I'm thinking I'll run back around 4:30, dump off a heavy sweater, my books/DellPod, and then come back w/ only my camera bag and pass off my coat to Claire, so she doesn't have too much stuff to deal with.
Are there lockers in Penn that you can use instead? I don't know how understanding people would be if you're gone for, like, 30-40 minutes. (I dunno, maybe it's quicker than that for you to go there and back - I'm sort of biased what with that ridiculous subway nightmare when I was there.)
No lockers at MSG. And it'd probably take me 40 minutes round trip. I'd wait until Stacey got there...and maybe I could make Claire hold my actual spot in line. I don't think people should be overly finicky about it. People that have hotels in the area are obviously going to be making a stop at them before the day is done. I remember reading something about people going back to their hotels for a quick shower and change before going in. Dunno. I guess it depends on the people around me in line. I should probably just skip it and show up at 6:30 and call it a day, but I know if I did, I'd end up not getting scanned and stuck 5 rows deep. Though I wonder if that'd be worth not freezing in line all day...hmmm...I don't know.
Not Penn Station either? Will people be okay with you saving a spot for Stacey? Don't show up at 6:30. The worst that could (and would very possibly) happen is you're stuck 5+ people deep, and that would suck. I say stay out in the cold, but at least you're guaranteed a helluva concert once you're in!
From what I gather there are no lockers at Penn either. I don't think there ever have been, but there certainly aren't post-9/11. I read something about there being some room (or something like that) but you have to have a train ticket for that day to store anything there.
The people in the line are going to have to be fine w/ Stacey joining the line at 1 or whenever she gets there. If not then, I'm buying my ticket and it'll be up to her to state her claim for joining (or else she's hoofing it to the back of the line). I sent her an e-mail saying that I was concerned that I thought it might be a problem, and she didn't seem to think it would be (she's done GA before in Philly)...Personally, as long as it's one other person, I don't see what the big deal is. I would NOT be at all cool with one token person holding a spot in line for their group of a dozen friends, but I don't see what the big deal w/ one person would be. It'd certainly be nice if they did it like in Boston, where you show up at 8, put your name down on a list, get a numbered wrist band, and then you're free to roam for the day until 5 or 6 or whenever the designated time is to re-align. I think if you're expected to just rough it in line, it should be totally cool for one person to represent a pair of people. It's not like rush for a show, where it means that someone's not going to make it into the show as a result. And with the lotto, it's not like it'll screw up who's getting into the ellips (well, I guess it would, if Stacey joined the line and got beeped in, that would have technically been a beep for the person that got there after me)...Bottom line, if it's 40 degrees out and raining, no one should be expected to sit there for the entire 8 hours (save two or three 5 minute pee breaks). And that includes the GA-buddy who will inevitably be in front of me who'll have traded off all afternoon and get beeped in where I should have. You figure there's going to be so much random shifting around in the line throughout the day that you just can't say "If that person hadn't been there, I would have gotten in!" because I'm sure there are dozens of other people in front of you that've shifted around and skewed it.
What I have a problem with is huge groups of people jumping the line en masse. In Brooklyn, about 1/2 hour before they let us in, 100+ people from the back of the line started slowly inching their way up to along side the people in the front. That, I definitely have a problem with. Groupie joined me around 3, and none of the 8 or so people that I was camping out with in line had any problem with her joining so late in the game.
Dunno...I do anticipate some bitchiness though. Whether it's Stacey joining me later or me leaving to drop stuff off (though if people leave to go back to their hotel rooms and take showers, I don't think it should be a problem to run back to my place to drop stuff off).
I totally know where you're coming from. And you're right, it's not like a rush line where her going ahead is going to screw one extra person out of a ticket or anything. When I had to hold my friend's spot in line in Seattle, I bought a dozen Mrs. Fields cookies to share with others. It's not the act, so much as the consideration behind it, that matters, right?
Yeah, you totally have to make an effort for the people around you. Either coming back w/ some goodies, or saying "I'm running back to my place for 1/2 hour, if you give me a couple bucks I'll grab some coffee on the way back," or something. I think it's all about being courteous to the people around you. Let them know that there's someone else coming, let them know that you're running off somewhere w/ an idea of how long you think you'll be gone, etc.
Besides, I'd imagine most people who run off to find a place to pee somewhere in Penn will end up taking longer than it'd take me (on a good train karma day) to scoot back to my place and back. It did only take 7 minutes that time we were going to wait for the boys outside. During the day, on a weekday, it really shouldn't take more than 10-15 minutes each way.
Will you really not be trying to autographs though? I think they're more inclined to be more energized to deal with fans on their first night, so you should take advantage of it!
