Wow, it took 5 months for the world to see that I am a big dork. Not too bad.
That CD Collection thread sealed it.
Pat, we knew you were a big dork long ago. But I can't believe that you actually took the time to type out that list.
Mabs, synchro went well, as evidenced by the fact that I am still alive. I had a great time.
Elph, did your DVD of 11/21 finish downloading? How does it look? I think I read somewhere on interference that its pretty good quality! Eeeee!!!
It's already Sunday, and I did not get nearly as much accomplished yesterday and Friday as I should have. Tsk, tsk!
Nope, the dvd hasn't finished downloading. I stopped it while I was away. It's only a little over 50% complete, and that's only part 1! I'm trying to find someone to do a B&P instead. Then hopefully I can send it to Pat and he can make copies.
WOOHOO! It's for City Lights Media Group. They're involved in TV (AMC's Movies 101...aka, Inside the Actors Studio w/ a far less obnoxious host!) and film (their first feature with Rosario Dawson is going to be coming out soon). I'll post more about my extremely bizarre interview later! I've got to chow down and do a quick revision of my film final paper before 6! Eeee!!!
Bono-Adam Lip Lock from 11/21!!
CONGRATS!
That's great! So you're taking this internship? You'll have to tell us all about it. It sounds perfect for you.
And I love the video!
FFFFUUUUUUCCCCCKKKKKK!!!!! I just got back from class and I had a message from Queer Eye saying that I got the Production Internship there! SH*T! Now what do I do? I'd prefer Queer Eye (because City Lights has produced some really SH*Tty stuff...Their three movies look terrible) BUT City Lights said that they have the potential for hiring after the internship. I've got to call Queer Eye back and see if there's any potential for a job (either there or at Bravo/NBC) after the internship. I don't want to just get dumped after the semester is over and have to muddle through trying to find a job, you know?!? AAAAHHHHH!!! What to do, what to do?!?! And then, I got the Production internship at QE, which even though it sounds like it might be more fun (getting to go on set for filmings), the other Casting one would probably have been more practical, right?! *headdesk*
ETA: I just got off the phone with the guy from Queer Eye and he said that they have great potential for hire after the internship, so Queer Eye it is!!! WHOOOOO!!! He said something about positions that past interns are in now, and that interns that make a good impression have a great shot at being hired, and that the Queer Eye name goes surprisingly far, since everyone has heard of it, blah, blah, blah! Considering potential for hire is fairly even, Carson, Kyan, Thom, Ted, and Jai seem like a much better option than an Inside the Actors Studio knockoff (even if the host is less annoying than Lipton...but really, who isn't?!) and trashy teen horror/sex romps! I've got to think that potential for future employment must be better at Bravo/NBC than the other place that's got 3 TV shows I've never heard of and another that was cancelled shortly after its initial airing (FilmFakers).
*deep sigh*
I'm off. I've actually got another interview in an hour that I didn't nix, because I figured it would be rude to just call up with such short notice to cancel.
Well, well, look who the cat dragged in! (Me.) In Belize right now. Only have 6 minutes left at this cafe, and then I've gotta run around and get fake, over-priced Mayan ruins stuff. Oh, this morning I visited the Altun-Ha ruins, and climbed two of their temples! Muy fun!
Don't have time to read the thread, but I take it Nic got more than one internship offer? Where? From whom? Give me the cliff notes, and asap. 5 minutes left.
Ciao!
Tiff - who's really fat now...I look like a 4-month pregnant woman.
YAY! I'm so happy for you! Queer Eye sounds great, especially because there's job potential! It must be such a relief to have an internship that you think you'll enjoy.
I'm off to tutor a 9th grade boy in English. His mom hired me, and the only thing she told me was, "He can't read." I really couldn't draw anything more specific out of her (not even the book he's supposed to be reading now in his English class). Should be interesting! I really have no idea what I'm going to do with him.
Wow, congrats Nicole! That's amazing!
Tiff is in an exotic country.
Claire is tutoring a child which is something I've always had an interest in doing.
Me? I am at home sick with the flu in an apartment that needs to be cleaned very badly. Good times. :)
Awww, sorry you're sick, Pat! I have a feeling I'm just going to wipe out and get really sick after this semester's done and I'm finally able to wind down. I'm fully prepared for the ickiness of it all!
Nothing much else here, aside from the fun internship news. I got no sleep last night, thanks to Crazy and her Oaf. She came in after midnight to take a 40+ minute shower, than the two of them returned at 3am (and weren't particularly quiet about it) to go to bed. Snoring ensued, which meant very little sleep for me...again! I had a dream that they got up and left in the middle of the night and I woke up all giddy after 4am, leaned over the bunk and shined my cell phone...no dice, they were still there! Didn't fall back asleep until after 5, then the alarm went off at 7:30. Booooo!!!
Oh, and she's still being a psychopath and opening the windows every now and then. It's 25 F*CKING DEGREES OUT!!! She needs to go!
I'm so excited about my little vindictive act of bitchiness that I'm going to do when I leave on Sunday. She always gets bent out of shape when I pull up the venician blinds a couple of inches (so I don't kill myself in the dark climbing onto the top bunk) and she'll spend five minutes getting it back down, bit by little bit. I think it's broken, and it will only go down about 1/2 inch at a time. So, before I leave, I'm putting both blinds all the way up, so she has to put all 6+ feet of it back down 1/2 inch at a time!!!
Haha. You're evil, Mabs! But you totally deserve to be. I would have gone crazy by now if I were you.
Pat, I'm sorry you're sick. I hope you get better soon! And you do NOT want this tutoring job. It was awful! The poor kid seemed miserable the whole time, and I really didn't know what to do with him. I'd ask him a question and he'd pause for about a minute, they say, "I dunno." It was like pulling teeth. I don't know how to be a tutor. I don't know what to do with him.
Yeah, I remember in high school I was supposed to tutor some kid in French, and he totally didn't want to be there. I just wasn't patient enough (or really prepared) to coax a response out of him. It's one thing if a kid is willing to seek out help in a subject, but when they're being forced to have a tutor (by a parent or teacher) I think it takes a hell of a lot of patience and work to get them going. Hopefully he'll come around. How often are you supposed to work with him?
Yeah, this kid definitely did not want to be there. His mom, who hired me, is so funny. She said to me, "He got a C in English. A C! How is that possible?! It's his native language!" And I'm being paid for this, so I feel like I have to be professional and have lots of stuff prepared, but it's so hard when he's so unresponsive. I'm supposed to be doing this every week while I'm home. Which is actually only three more times.
Is it snowing in NYC yet? It is here. Hopefully it'll stop by tomorrow.
Doesn't appear to be snowing here yet. I was just out getting dinner and it wasn't. I've been scrounging for food all week, because I've decided that I've had enough cooking for the semester. There's not really all that much to eat down here though, so it's been slim pickings! Oh, and I finally killed off the Cadbury bar last night, so I don't know what I'm going to do tonight! I still have Tim Tams, but I'm saving those so my mom can bask in the glory that is the Tim Tam! Hmm...I think I have 4 or so...she only needs one!
Sounds like a pain with that kid. At least it's only 3 more visits. What did his mother say? Does she expect you to miraculously motivate this kid, or is she trying to jump start him too. Hopefully you'll be able to get through to him a bit over the next few weeks.
I'm not sure what the kid's mom expects of me. I don't think she really knows. Oh well. She just wants him to do better. She's trying to motivate him as well, but she doesn't know how and hasn't been successful so far. She's soooo nice, though, and has made me feel somewhat reassured that I'm not expected to single-handedly turn this kid into a literary genius.
I don't know how I've survived here without Cadbury! I ate it all the time in NZ. Actually, the insane number of Christmas cookies in our house have replaced Cadbury for me. I bet you're excited to get home and eat a nice, home-cooked meal! You appreciate your mom's cooking so much more once you've been forced to fend for yourself for awhile (at least that's the case with me).
Ooh, my bro got accepted to college! He's going to Colgate. My mom is overjoyed; she thought he wouldn't get in.
Hey, congrats to your brother! It's always a reief to have that all sorted out. It's nice that he's got it all set so early. I was still waiting for replys into the spring. Damn Fordham took forever, only to come back and bite me in the ass. Yeah, I'm not bitter.
I'm so excited about food from home. I actually don't have a problem with my own cooking. For the most part it's a lot of the same stuff I have at home (though making due without an oven). I cook a lot at home too...It's more the fact that 4 months in (with only the week reprieve for Thanksgiving) I get awfully sick of eating the same thing for a week. This week is chicken with carrots, rice, and broccoli. This week is spagetti with ground turkey and zuchini...ALL WEEK! By day 4, I'm usually ready to just chuck whatever's left. It's tough cooking for one!...So yeah, I'm beyond excited for some variety! And beef! Mmmm...steak! I eat an awful lot of white meat here, and I'm ready for some steak! Christmas dinner-ROAST BEEF! Mmmm! (We're not big on doing turkey again less than a month after having it for Thanksgiving...though this past year's Thanksgiving dinner was fabu! We just got turkey breasts, rather than the whole bird (it's only the 3 of us, so why bother) and we browned it on the stove top first for a while, then finished it off baking it with carrots and shallots...OMG! I need that interference drool-smiley!)
Anyway, enough food talk. I don't have any food in the apt, so it's just going to get me hungry for nothing.
Talk to you later, and I'll keep you posted about tomorrow.
I just got my housing info for next semester...it'll be interesting. They're out of rooms so I'm living in a converted lounge with 5 other girls. None of whom I know. Ugh.
Awww, I'm so sorry! Sounds like a raw deal...maybe they won't be so horrible though. Or if there are 2 or 3 of them that you get along with you can band together against the Crazies!!!
Back to the topic of this thread (kind of): Congrats to Bono on being named one of Time Magazine's Persons of the Year!
Mabs, you're home now, right? Happy to be back? Have you just been relaxing?
On Saturday we had our first of four Christmas celebrations, with my mom's 2 brothers and their families. It was fun. And I got a semi-permanent subbing job! I'll have the same job until I go back to school (3 weeks total); it'll be nice to have some continuity and to be able to get to know the kids and maybe even do some real teaching.
Time's photo essay
I got home last night. I stopped off Sunday night to stay at a friend's house and we did our Christmas exchanging. I got a pair of Coldplay tix for Uniondale!!! The not so great part is that the concert's on Monday, and I have a Monday night class w/ a prof who's really picky about people missing class (since we only meet once a week). Hmmm...I wonder if it's during my spring break? I'll have to look into that!
Thanks for the link, Elph. I saw a little blurb on the news Sunday about him being named co-person of the year. Very cool. He was also A&E's Biography of the Year!
Last night was the last show of the Vertigo Tour in the US. I heard they aren't going to be coming back for a stadium leg. They have all the dates booked at the stadiums, but they're going to just cancel them all. Oh, guess there will be one more US show. They're ending the tour with a date in Hawaii.
What's you sub job? What grade/subject. Sounds nice to have something steady for a few weeks!
Ooh, I didn't even realize that it was the last night of the Vertigo tour. And I haven't heard that they're cancelling the stadium tour. Where have I been?! We should all go to Hawaii to catch that final show.
The Coldplay concert sounds like a great gift, even though the timing sucks (hopefully it'll wind up on your spring break). Would you be able to make it to the concert once your class ends? If there's an opening act, it's very possible that you'd see all of Coldplay's set, right?
My job is subbing for a language arts teacher at my old high school who's on maternity leave. She teaches remedial language arts (11th and 12th grade), and the largest class she has only consists of 7 students! I don't have any lesson plans, though, which is scary. For example, for one class, all I know is that they're supposed to read Lord of the Flies. I can do whatever I want with it. For another class, they're supposed to be doing short stories. It seems like it'll be fun, actually.
5th page?! Come on, folks! I'm off to Oklahoma today and I don't think my family there has Internet, so make sure this thread doesn't get lost while I'm gone! Happy Holidays, everyone!
Damn...I thought I replied to your last post...guess not!
I looked the dates of my vacation up, and the Coldplay concert is on the 1st day back at classes. Though they have another concert that Sunday, so maybe I could find someone to trade with?!?
Anyway, guess that's about it for me. Looks like some cookie baking and a movie are on the agenda today. Fun, fun!
I'm home.
*collapse*
I think I need a vacation from my vacation. Does that make any sense? I'm so exhausted.
