Ick, school again?? *whistles and grins* Sucks to be you guys! Happy New Year, ladies (and Pat, wherever the hell you are!)

What's that smell? Oy, Switzerland, you the one who cut the cheese?

I miss Ellie3. Happy New Year, ladies (and Pat, wherever the hell you are!)

What were your guys's thoughts on Memoirs? I was disappointed by it, although I thought it looked good. I'll be seeing Brokeback Mountain at some point this week. Probably Last Holiday too.

I was very very disapointed by MEMOIRS. It was pretty though.

I've ranted on why I didn't like Memoirs in some other threads, but what were your reasons?

I thought the acting was a little weak in Memoirs. And I really do think they should have cast Japanese actors.

Guess what? I got moved out of my converted lounge to a single! No crazy roomies! Hooray!

Wow, really? A studio of your very own? Congratulations, Claire! How excited (and lonely) are you??

I can't believe Chang Ziyi was nominated for a Golden Globe. She had such a strong Mandarin accent. I didn't buy for a second that she was Japanese.

I'm in my lovely, spacious, new room now, and I am a tad lonely, but that's just because no one else is back yet. I'm sure I'll love living by myself here! Much better than living with 5 potential crazies.

I saw Brokeback Mountain yesterday, and I liked it. I think I may have been a little disappointed because I've seen so much hype for it, and it would be impossible for the film to live up to that. And I knew how it ended going into it. So I did really enjoy it, but it still felt like a let-down. Does that make sense?

What area are you in? All furnished yet?

What you said about BMM makes sense. Weirdly, I read and saw all the hype about it, THEN read the book, which was as boring as a dog's sleeping ass, and NOW am seeing the movie with really, really diminished expectations. I'm expecting some hot guy-on-guy action, but not much in the way of plot. They meet, they separate, they meet again, they separate, he dies.

I still haven't seen BBM.

MEMOIRS was a mess. I didn't care for much of the acting. The pace seemed very rushed at the ending and glacially slow at other times. The ridiculousness of the exposition got to me, "I understand they are Geishas not prostitutes how many times do you have to say it."
The characters were turned into very two dimensional figures. They changed or glossed over plot points that were the crux of the story. I'm sure there is much more, but blah.

The cinematography was beautiful though. There were some really "wowing" moments.

I stand corrected, you are as vapid as they say.

Posted: 1/19/06 at 7:34pm

Hey all!!! We finally got the computer a new hard drive on Tuesday, but I got my wisdom teeth yanked that morning, so I was pretty loopey yesterday. I had an impacted/sideways tooth that was a bit of a mess, so I was expecting to be really swollen/bruised, but it all appears to be just peachy! *knock on wood*

I still haven't seen BBM (it doesn't start here until tomorrow). Thanks for ruining it for me, Tiff!! Just kidding. I didn't know that Jack died for sure, but the trailor pretty much gives it away w/ the whole "If they find out about this, they'll kill us"/Ledger hugging the jacket bit.

I wasn't crazy about Memoirs, but I went into it with super-low expectations...I didn't think it was as horrible as a lot of critics said, but I also don't think it's worthy of getting much (if any) award recognition (other than some technical awards, perhaps).

I saw Walk the Line again, and I'm so glad that Joaquin and Reese won on Monday!! I'm sure PSH will end up taking the Oscar (as Joaquin hasn't won anything else this season), but it was nice to see him win Monday, just the same. Such a pity he lost $220 to Ryan Phillippe in the process though! Huzzah for the Golden Globes!! I'm kind of bitter that his chances at the Oscars are next to nill, mainly because Foxx won last year. Huzzah for the Golden Globes!! He didn't even do his own singing in Ray, and besides, Don Cheadle totally deserved the Oscar over him for Hotel Rwanda. Grrrr!!! Whatever, j'adore Phil anyway, and I'll be tickled pink to see him win. *fingers crossed*

I don't think I've really seen much else. The Town Hall Theatre had A History of Violence last week, but I wasn't in the mood (even though I've heard really good things about it). I'll have some movie hopping to do when I get back to NYC, that's for sure!!

Anyway, back to the Goldne Globes...I think this has to be one of the first awards shows where I found myself generally pleased with most of the choices: Phil, Felicity Huffman, Joaquin, Reese, MLP...and even though I didn't give a rat's ass about Best Actor/Actress in a TV Drama, Hugh Laurie and Geena Davis had rather amusing speeches. I was laughing my ass off when Davis pulled one over on them with her speech. I was totally rolling my eyes "because of you, one day, I'd like to be president," (Cut to Gwynnie batting her eyes) *gag* "Well, it'd be sweet if that were true"...HAHHAHAH!!! I especially loved her mocking "Awwww" back at the audience! Thumbs up to you, Geena!

Anyway, gotta run! Talk to you guys later!!

I loved Geena's speech, too! She was hilarious. I posted on the Golden Globes thread throughout the night about how happy I was in general with the winners. Huzzah for the Golden Globes!!

For the Oscars, I like all of the main contenders in the best actor race (Joaquin Phoenix, PSH, Heath Ledger), so I think I'll be happy no matter what happens there.

I'm glad your computer is working now! When do you head back to school?

Claire, so glad to read about your single! Even if you're a touch on the lonesome side, it's got to be better than having 5 other chicks in a SINGLE open space!!! I'm hoping that I don't have someone sitting there waiting when I get back on Sunday! I'd like a day or two solo to get back into the swing of things!

I need to pack stuff up tonight/tomorrow. I'm not sure when I'm going back...either Tomorrow night or Saturday morning. I'll be staying with a friend and then I'll move back in on Sunday and classes start Monday (at 9am!) Blech!

I didn't get anything done on my thesis (research-wise!) VERY, VERY BAD!!!

I don't think anyone can be expected to do work over break. Is this semester gonna be pretty busy, though? With your internship, classes, and your thesis? That sounds like a lot! I'm sure you'll manage, though. Huzzah for the Golden Globes!! Taking any interesting classes? I think you may have mentioned what you're taking already, but if you have I need a refresher.

Right now the class that's killing me is my English seminar, the Negro as an Invisible Man. It only meets once a week (for 3 hours), so it seems like we have SO much to do between classes. By the next class I have to read Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man, write a paper on it, and plan a discussion for part of it. And start researching for the huge semester paper we have. And choose a topic for an oral report. Ugh. And I have other classes, too!

I liked Invisible Man. I read it for an American Lit class last year, I think...in the fall, maybe.

This semester I've got the 60s Lit/Philosophy class (6 cred), History of Film, Virginia Woolf, and some sort of critical writing class that I took just for the prof, who is no longer teaching it. Ugh!

I expect it to be pretty busy, but I'm sure it'll all be fine. Hopefully I'll be able to double dip on some stuff, writing thesis stuff for the 60s class and/or critical writing (or whatever it is).

Why does Ellison's "The Invisible Man" sound so familiar... was it made into a movie or play? Am I better read than I thought? No, it must have been made into a movie or play, right?

Okay, to get this thread rolling again---a questionnaire!

1. Where have you been in the last 2 months? (Location-wise)

2. Where are you now?

3. Where will you be this time next month?

4. Why have we all let this thread die over the last 2 months? A questionnaire!

5. Are you working/interning? If so, where? If not, why are you a failure in this one simple necessity?

6. What are you doing in the fall?

7. What movies/books/interesting random things have you seen/read/done?

8. How goes the love life?

9. Is it COLD where you are? (It's so sunny here!)

10. Who's your daddy? Bono! doesn't count. He ain't mah daddy. He mah baby daddy.

1. Where have you been in the last 2 months? (Location-wise)
New Zealand (well, it was a little longer than 2 months ago, but it's close), Oklahoma, South Carolina, New York, New Jersey, Virginia

2. Where are you now?
Virginia

3. Where will you be this time next month?
Virginia

4. Why have we all let this thread die over the last 2 months?
I've been pretty good about bumping it up!

5. Are you working/interning? If so, where? If not, why are you a failure in this one simple necessity?
Um...I work in my school's Writing Center. I guess that counts. Even though the pay is miserable. And I'm working on getting an internship for the summer! (actually, I've been meaning to ask you guys if any of you will help me with my cover letter and resume).

6. What are you doing in the fall?
School. Again.

7. What movies/books/interesting random things have you seen/read/done?
Um...since when? I guess I'll answer for the past month or so. My favorite recent movie is Walk the Line; I've been a bum for the past few months so I've seen way too many movies to list. Right now I'm reading Ellison's Invisible Man (Tiff, it's a classic, so I'm sure you've heard of it. It's been called the most important novel of the 20th century. I don't know if it's a movie). I recently read Son of a Witch, which I liked. I've gone back to synchronized swimming and have to learn a whole routine by next week because we have a meet. Riiiiight.

8. How goes the love life?
Pathetically. I'm afraid I'm going to die alone.

9. Is it COLD where you are? (It's so sunny here!)
It's beautiful right now! About 70 degrees!

10. Who's your daddy? Bono! doesn't count. He ain't mah daddy. He mah baby daddy
haha. Then I'll say Edge. A questionnaire!

1. Where have you been in the last 2 months? (Location-wise)

NYC and NH.

2. Where are you now?

New Hampshire.

3. Where will you be this time next month?

Back in New York.

4. Why have we all let this thread die over the last 2 months?

Well, I'm sure the fact that my folks' computer crashed and burned didn't help matters. Sucks to have to rely on a small town library's fickle hours and sparse array of computers.

5. Are you working/interning? If so, where? If not, why are you a failure in this one simple necessity?

I'll be interning at Queer Eye starting next Thursday, and the Theatre Talk gig should still be going. Hopefully I'll be more on the ball with going to/reviewing shows this semester! A questionnaire!

6. What are you doing in the fall?

Damned if I know. It better involve getting a pay check sizable enough to cover my rent somewhere in NYC.

7. What movies/books/interesting random things have you seen/read/done?

Haven't read a damn thing all break. I checked out some Bob Dylan books from the library for my thesis and bought a book by Christopher Nolan (the Miracle Drug guy!) but haven't cracked a page...Movies: LOVED Walk the Line. I went on a Phoenix-fest renting oodles of his movies (even back to the Leaf days). I got a bunch of CDs at video/music joint closeout last month, but I haven't listened to a single one! Bad, bad, bad!

8. How goes the love life?

Next question...though the guy who was working at the glasses place tonight seemed...friendly. At least it was a small boost in the self-esteem dept. Though, for the most part, I'm right there w/ you, Claire!!

9. Is it COLD where you are? (It's so sunny here!)

Twas beautiful today. Mid-50s...very un-New Hampshire in January!!

10. Who's your daddy? Bono! doesn't count. He ain't mah daddy. He mah baby daddy....Ugh, I don't know.

Tiff, where are your answers, you wench?!?!?

Just giving this a bump, since we haven't had any posts for a couple of days. I'm back in NYC. Apparently I have a roommate, but she hasn't moved in yet. I've got to get some groceries, and then I'm going to veg for the night. My mom gave me her cold, which she got last week from my dad, so with all the running around, I'm pretty much spent!

Talk to you guys later!
