I'm home.

*collapse*

I think I need a vacation from my vacation. Does that make any sense? I'm so exhausted.

Hey Tiff, welcome back!! How was your trip? Should I be jealous because you're tan in December? Tell us all about it!

Where's Nic? Belated Merry Christmakuhzaa, people!

Hi Claire! How've ya been? Trip was good - lots of fun, but at the same time furthering my resolve to move outta the house. I think at my age, living with the parents really just isn't tolerable anymore, wouldn't you agree? It's just...too much.

Trip...good. Gained 8 lbs, and I reckon the bulk of that was from the cruise - the biggest stressor was, "Oh dear, what will I eat...should I get two appetizers...or two entrees...or all 4...plus dessert?" And then gambling (lost MORE money - I give up), catching their sub-par "Broadway/Las Vegas-esque" shows and then hauling my increasingly fat ass up to Lido deck for the grilled sandwiches, hot dogs, burgers, pizza and calzone. I even had to buy an additional carry-on bag to bring home all the goodies I bought.

So all in all, it was quite productive. I liked Disney World more than I expected I would - especially EPCOT. Have you been?

Hey all! Just a quickie from the library (which is closing in a couple of minutes!) The hard drive on the home computer crashed earlier this week. Merry freaking Christmas. We freaked out...lost lots and LOTS of pictures. I'll type more later. Just wishing you guys a VERY Happy New Year. I'll be back around later. I don't know when we'll get a new computer and the library will be closed until Wednesday, I think.

Take care. I made copies of some U2 pics and I've got your addresses, so maybe I'll get the packages out Tuesday or sometime soon!

Bye! Belated Happy Festivous people!

I'm so sorry about your computer, Nic. Do you think the stuff you lost can be recovered? That really sucks.

Tiff, I understand about the parents. I've been home for about a month now and I'm already about to go crazy.

I've been to Disney World (all the parks, including Epcot) 7 times and I love it. I think MGM is my favorite park, though. I'm glad you had fun! I gained weight, too.

I just got home today; I was in Oklahoma and then South Carolina. I left 70 degree weather and came home to freezing rain. Belated Happy Festivous people! I feel bad for everyone going to Times Square tonight. The weather is pretty bad.

Happy New Year's Eve, all!!!

Oh crap, sorry to hear about your hard drive, Nic! When is it getting fixed/replaced? Very, very sorry to hear about you losing your pictures - that would kill me the most. I get paranoid deleting my memory cards even after I've loaded them onto the computer and burned the CD, because I'm so worried of accidentally losing them forever. Which pics were they? Belated Happy Festivous people!

Hope you come back soooon! No rush on the pics and DVD/CD mailing - your October care package is still sitting on my bed. I really ought to mail it before the chocolate turns white. I'm afraid by the time you receive the box, the inside jokes will be stale and unfunny.

What were you doing in Oklahoma and South Carolina? What's it like there?

I liked MGM, but I think my impression of it was tainted by the parents, who didn't want to go on the rides (I desperately wanted to go on the Aerosmith coaster or the Tower of Terror, but the parents were weenies and I didn't want to go by myself) and then our combined pissiness just made us all sulky the rest of the day. That "Lights, Cameras, Motors" or whatever was pretty cool though - and Indiana Jones was nift, even though I feel like I saw something like it at Universal California. (Wild West show?) What did you think of the Animal Kingdom? It was my family's favorite, but I thought it was sort of lame, aside from The Lion King and Tarzan shows (the latter being lame and cheezy but MY GOD THE TARZAN IS A BUFF GREEK GOD IN A LOIN CLOTH!!). The "safari" jeep ride was very cool, but I would say that was my least favorite park. In order, I'd rank 'em EPCOT, MGM, Magic Kingdom (it seemed too much like Disneyland) and Animal Kingdom. Downtown Disney was pretty fun - I met broadwaystar2b for dinner at Planet Hollywood and ate Christmas dinner with the folks at Rainforest Cafe (which surprisingly had excellent food!).

When was the last time you were there?

I'm not too crazy about Animal Kingdom, either. I didn't catch the Tarzan show, though! A buff guy in a loincloth doesn't sound so bad, so it's too bad I missed it! And yeah, I loved MGM cuz of the Aerosmith Rockin' Roller Coaster and the Tower of Terror, so without those I can see how it would be disappointing. I'd rank the parks MGM, Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Animal Kingdom. The last time I went to Disney World was for my senior class trip, so I guess that was three years ago. It doesn't seem that long ago! I went three times in a ridiculously short amount of time, because I went with my field hockey team, my swim team, and then with my senior class. I guess my high school has a fascination with Disney World.

I was in Oklahoma visiting my aunt, who just had a baby, so it was great meeting my new cousin. And then my fam went to South Carolina straight from OK to see my grandparents. Basically my week was spent stuffing myself with holiday food and visiting relatives. And watching football. If I have to watch one more football game I think I'll throw the TV out the window. My family members insist on watching all the bowl games, and it's getting old.

What did y'all do for New Year's Eve?

The Tarzan show itself is pretty skippable (I've never seen the movie and I don't like Phil Collins songs so why I was there...I don't know...) Of course, I was staying busy snapping pictures of Tarzan like the dirty perv I am. Unfortunately my camera sucks so this is the best pic I could get. It doesn't do justice to the muscles on this dude - when he was swinging in on the vine and doing all his flexi-acrobatic stuff, I was all, [looking up to the heavens] "Well done, you."

Belated Happy Festivous people!

New Year's Eve was pretty uneventful. Went to a bar in the afternoon to watch a couple of hockey games and then I was supposed to head over to a friend's house to watch some movies and wound up getting lazy and just staying home instead. Phantom Of The Opera was on TV so I watched that and bitched about how bad Gerard is in the role. You?

ETA: Okay, I know I asked this a couple of months ago (and possible a couple of months before that), but honest question - is it just me or has there been a sudden influx of obnoxious, immature teeny-bopper posters on the OT board lately? It's as if they all signed up when I was away and I was so shocked when I returned to see the state of the board! jrb_actor has the right idea in starting the banal details thread, but it seems like the newbies don't think it applies to them. Thank God I have you people here! Belated Happy Festivous people!

ETA2: Two things I forgot to mention about my cruise. You have not lived until you've been to karaoke night and seen a 19-year-old Washington boy put his heart into (unintentionally) mangling Mysterious Ways. The sad thing is he earnestly thought he was doing well and all the drunken patrons were cheering him on. I guess you had to be there, but it was hilarious and sad at the same time.

The second thing was that one of the cruise shows was an homage to '80s music, and they used a gospel choir set-up to perform "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For". For some reason, this sort of puzzled me so I was wondering what you guys thought about it because their performance seemed to be based on the impression that the song is somehow cheerful and inspirational. So I was curious about your guys's interpretations. The song has a lot of Christian undertones (esp. the last verse) but to me, it's actually about questioning your faith (in God, perhaps, and maybe life in general) and Bono's singing that he's jumped through all these hoops, tried to align himself with good along with the bad, but no matter what he does, he still hasn't found what he's looking for. Not really the stuff of uplifting gospel songs. Thoughts?

Ooh, Tarzan is quite buff. I wouldn't mind watching him swing around onstage!

I spent New Year's Eve at my friend's house. It was uneventful, but we had a good time. After midnight we watched The 40 Year Old Virgin, which was funny.

I haven't really noticed an abnormal number of teeny boppers around here, but then again I mostly stick to this thread and only check out other ones that look interesting to me. I think I tend to ignore the teeny bopper fans; I don't really pay attention to their posts.

That Mysterious Ways karaoke performance sounds awful! I don't think I would have been able to stand watching it. I watched New Zealand Idol every week when I was in NZ, and one guy performed With or Without You one week. He actually wasn't bad, but I couldn't get over the fact that he wasn't Bono.

About I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For...I'm not sure what I think of a gospel choir performing it. I agree with you; the song is laced with desperation. I've always thought of it as being related to religion. I think he's trying to get closer to God but isn't quite able to grasp the sense of spirituality and closeness to God that he's searching for. But even though it's about doubt, I think there's still hope. He keeps searching, even though he hasn't been successful yet. He recognizes the sacrafices that God has made for him and still believes in a higher power. Having a gospel choir perform the song emphasizes its hopeful nature, which I think is important. And gospel choirs don't necessarily have to give uplifting performances solely praising God. Maybe it's a good thing that they're performing a song that highlights someone questioning his faith. It provides a more real aspect of religion. So I think it was an interesting decision, and not necessarily a bad one.

Side note, just found a really lengthy Bono interview from Dec 17 in UK's Guardian Unlimited. It's worth a read, although Bono's so bloody verbose I admit I skimmed a lot of the lengthy paragraphs that begin and end with "".

http://observer.guardian.co.uk/omm/story/0,13887,1667368,00.html

I just had to admit that after this little rant, I give Larry Mullen +5. I'd still kick him out sooner than Adam, but I've warmed to him after this:

Minutes before U2 are due on stage one night or another in Montreal, drummer Larry Mullen Jr, who founded the group and in a gang of strong, proud characters is the most erratically protective of the idea of U2 as Great Rock Group on a wild perfectionist mission, ponders the issue of Bono as ubiquitous world saviour, or high-concept heckler, or plain old busybody.

'Sometimes I really wish he would do something that we could punch a big hole into. I'd really enjoy that - to go up to him and say, you ****er. Sometimes, it's just so constant, the meetings, the speaking, the mouth, but in the end even I have to say he's doing a great job, and he's getting things done. Look, if it was possible to have a really good kick at what he does, as a band we would have done it before anyone else. During the recording of our album, he'll be away on a venture, and it's like, great, peace. He gets impatient in the studio, and we tell him to **** off, go and meet George Bush. And he does! Maybe it's our fault! And then he comes back and he's been working on a lyric and he's fresh and really into it. So it does work out.'

I totally envision a Bridget Jones-type pathetic brawl, fit with girlie kicking and slapping.

Thanks for the thoughts on the song, Claire. I see what you mean, which is why I was sort of conflicted with how I felt about it. Maybe it was just the surprise in seeing it performed in a way I hadn't seen before. Do you guys remember the music video? I just vaguely recall them in somewhere like Vegas, and some hooker-type chick? Or am I totally off the page here?

Ahh, that's so cool! Don't worry about being spotted, I'm sure everyone else around there was doing the exact same thing as you. What does it say at the foot of the obelisk? Is there a plaque or words or anything?

Anyway, just got a follow-up with the Victoria job. Apparently I was one of the "top four" candidates, but there were only 3 jobs, and those 3 successful SH*Theads answered with more "specifics" than I did. I knew that first F*CKing interview would kill me. They said I had a really good interview, but when push came to shove, those people had the upper edge. Well, F*CK them. She kept re-iterating that I was in the top 4. Well, like I give a F*CK! If I don't have the job, I could be in the bottom four for all it's worth, right? It just kills me right now because I'm fighting with the parents (again) so I really needed this job offer to get me out of Vancouver, pronto. Argh, I'm so pissed and tearing up.

(Luckily I understand the meaning of the word 'banal' so I won't be starting a self-indulgent threads like so many of the newbies around here!)

I'm so sorry, Tiff, that really sucks. Being #4 when the top 3 people get jobs seems even worse than being at the bottom of the list, because it means you were soclose and just missed out. That must be so frustrating. I'm sure you'll find the job that's right for you, though. Are there any other good prospects right now?

Hey guys...back at the library for a quick check of my e-mail. Nothing of interest...shock!

We still haven't heard from the people on a date when the tech guy is going to come in to replace the hard drive. We brought it in to get it checked out, and I guess they couldn't retrieve anything, unfortunately. About 9 months ago, something funky happened to the computer, where the icon to burn pictures directly to CD disappeared, and my mom had just been saving them on files on the computer (I showed her a different way to burn them, but she's not terribly computer savvy, so she fogot how to do it and just kind of left them as is). We have some sets that ended up getting burned onto CD (when we took the memory stick someplace and got them all burned on). THANK GOD I kept my memory stick of pix from the U2 shows (Brooklyn and all the MSG shows). I put those on our home computer during Thanksgiving break. I'd be livid if I had lost those...We did lose a lot of pictures of my dog. That's the big pisser. We have a ton, but since we had to put him to sleep over the summer I think that's the biggest jolt.

Anyway...Sorry to hear that the job didn't work out Tiff. Maybe this means you really should look into coming to New York. I'll be looking for a roommate in the spring. *wink, wink* *nudge, nudge*

I still haven't mailed your stuff out. I've been very lazy and the weather hasn't been that great. I'm not a fan of driving in the snow (which is why it's been a week since I've come to the library!) And Tiff, I can't wait for the care package with all the little inside jokes, etc. They won't be stale. It'll be great fun, and I'm really looking forward to checking out my goodies (old Canadian Halloween candy and all!) Did you put pictures in? I can't believe I didn't take any pictures of the two of us on my own camera!

And Elph, thanks for the One Tree Hill pix. I'm so jealous! Very, very cool!! Happy New Year, ladies (and Pat, wherever the hell you are!)

Take care, guys. Gotta run.

Where this hell IS Pat??

So it appears I missed a U2 tribute band in Vancouver last night. I was totally choked about it, but then I went on their website to see what I missed.

http://www.u2tributeband.com/default.html

Check out the audios and visuals. They kinda suck, right? If it's hosted at the Commodore, it's usually a big deal (that's the club the real U2 was supposed to have done a surprise St. Patrick's Day show that never materialized). Who would've thought we'd be lucky to have seen 2U, Nic?

Tell me what you thought of Sweeney, Claire! It wasn't your first time, right?

Oh yeah Nic, I put the pictures in for developing yesterday (finally, there was a sale for 1 one print, get one free, so I was all over that). Still waiting to see when I can pick them up today, but eventually you'll get 'em!

Tiff, I don't think you missed much. I don't like tribute bands in general; I can never get over the fact that they aren't the "real thing."

It was my first time seeing Sweeney, and I LOVED it. I thought it was fantastic. The music is absolutely beautiful, and the story is great; I didn't see the plot twist coming at all. The acting was wonderful, and I really thought it was clever how the 10 cast members made up the orchestra. I can't imagine how hard it was for them to remember their lines, their songs, and their music. I asked Lauren Molina about it at the stage door, and she went into this long spiel about her history of cello playing and how she felt about playing the cello in the show. She was so sweet and adorable. So yeah, it was great (I know I've used way too many cliche positive adjectives in this review, sorry).

Quickly checking in...Busy being lazy (what the hell, it's my last monsterous "vacation").

Been catching up on movies lately (The Squid and the Whale, Walk the Line, Narnia, King Kong, Casanova, Memoirs of a Geisha...Brokeback Mountain still isn't playing here, so I haven't seen that yet, and I still have to see Munich, Transamerica, Syriana and oodles of others). I'm currently going on a Phoenix-fest after seeing Walk the Line.

Nothing else of interest. I'll get around to mailing you stuff out...sometime soon. I promise. Happy New Year, ladies (and Pat, wherever the hell you are!)

Off to check my e-mail before I get booted off the computer at the library. We've been getting the run-around from the computer folks, and still haven't even gotten a call back from the people that are supposed to schedule an appointment to come in and replace the hard drive on my computer. I have a feeling if they don't call my folks today the SH*T is really going to hit the fan. Should be...interesting.

Bye guys!

I loved Walk the Line too, Mabs. I've been catching up on movies as well (why not be lazy while you have the chance? Happy New Year, ladies (and Pat, wherever the hell you are!)). Memoirs of a Geisha, Narnia, the Family Stone, Fun with Dick and Jane, Walk the Line...I'm planning on seeing Brokeback Mountain tomorrow. I'm also going crazy with NetFlix while I'm home.

Mabs, when do you go back to school? I leave on Friday. Not looking forward to it. I've been a teacher for so long (well, it feels like a long time) that I don't want to go back to being a student. And I'm still worried about my housing situation (6 girls in 1 room). Have you heard about/from your new roomie?

Good luck again with the computer!
