Great band, Blondie...

And I know, I wasn't trying to rhyme off every good song they recorded in the 90s. Eejit.

Hey folks,

A few thoughts after getting caught up:

-Namo, I'm totally jealous that you've caught so many of U2's early shows! I've acquired a sizable collection of old U2 boots on cassette that I'm planning on converting to CD this summer (many of which are from Boston--from Boy, October, and The Joshua Tree tours...don't think there are any from War or Unforgettable Fire...Anyway, Namo and Jim, if you're interested in any copies, feel free to drop me a PM, and I'll see what I can do in the coming weeks!)

-Glad you had a great time Jim...I was kind of skimming, but did you say you went to all three shows in Boston?!? I'm so jealous if you did! Boston II sounded AMAZING!!! I was surprised Saturday's show didn't have a few more suprises, but I would have loved to have heard Wild Horses live!!!

-Blech, more Pop and Zooropa in Europe. To be fair, I don't own either (yes Ellie, I'm a bad fan) but I've heard enough from boots to decide that certainly wasn't my favorite era. Sure, there are some good songs, but I'd be perfectly happy if they get those songs out of their system before October!

-Tiff, I'm not necessarily a huge fan of Yahweh...I just enjoy the occasional acoustic version of just about any song, and since I'd already heard Original in Brooklyn, I wanted to hear Yahweh live (which I did...having heard both, I'd go w/ Original!) Speaking of acoustic songs, I had a cassette of all acoustic U2 songs (Zoocoustic) and I've lost it. Way to go! Looks like I'll have to troll around on-line and see if I can find another copy of it. I had big plans to make a mega acoustic mix CD...alas, loosing that takes a big chunk out...BOOO!

-I don't know...I guess that's about it for now. Good luck finding a job Tiff!

But when did New Hampshire become--Such a backward wasteland of seatbelt hating crazies?...I mean, only 40 people actually live there. The others are just visitors who come for the tax-free liquor and three inches of novelty coastline. John Hodgeman on The Daily Show (1-30-07)

Ooh, that acoustic cassette sounds cool.
I really like Yahweh. I got to hear both Yahweh and OotS at MSG and I do like OotS better, but I was glad they did both. They announced that they hadn't planned on doing OotS. I'm glad you're back, mabel!

Have you heard about the Live 8 concert in London? U2 will be performing along with Madonna, Elton John, Coldplay, Paul McCartney and many others! That is one show I would LOVE to see. It's to raise awareness of the Make Poverty History campaign, organized by Bob Geldof. Simultaneous concerts will be going on in Paris, Rome, Berlin and Philadelphia. If it manages to capture the magic of Live Aid, it will be incredible.

The Killers and Scissor Sisters in London.

P. Diddy here.

Sigh. P. Diddy, for god's sake.

The London line-up looks phenomenal. It makes Toronto's "SARSstock" look boring. If it's true:

London:
Coldplay
The Killers
Velvet Revolver
Bob Geldof
The Cure
Mariah Carey
Dido
Keane
Snow Patrol
Elton John
Annie Lennox
Madonna
Paul McCartney
Razorlight
Snoop Dogg
Sting
U2
Joss Stone
Stereophonics
R.E.M.
Scissor Sisters
Muse
Robbie Williams

Philly:

Will Smith, Bon Jovi, Dave Matthews Band, Stevie Wonder and P. Diddy.

Yeah, amazing line-up for London! Although Keane and Stereophonics would be nap-time.

I'd sleep through Snoop Dogg but I'd be afraid of being munched by those who've taken too many bong hits.

I wonder who's going to top the bill? Tough competition.

And Dido is another snooze-fest...are you familiar with her? Zzz.

Dido's one where I wouldn't INTEND to sleep but I'd wind up drifting off just because of her voice. I'm familiar with some of her work...zzz..."And I-I want to thank you...for giving me the bezzz....zzzz....z......"

I just can't believe that out of those performers, these are the ones that I would pay full price to see in their own concert, and now they're going to be on one stage!:

Coldplay
The Killers
Velvet Revolver
The Cure
Mariah Carey
Elton John
Madonna
Paul McCartney
Sting
U2
Joss Stone
R.E.M.
Scissor Sisters
Robbie Williams

There was just a news segment on Live 8 a minute ago. I don't know if I agree with this being more of a political awareness campaign instead of a charity money-making event. Can't it be both?

I think the idea is to suggest that simple charity isn't enough - the politicians need to think of the bigger picture, and get up off their fat asses! Live 8 is about getting THEM to do the work, not us. So I think fund-raising by means of telethon or whatever would undermine that.

And also, you'd pay full price (so would I) - but the tickets are free!

I know, can you believe it? Apparently to get tickets, it's some complicated thing to do with text messaging, and multiple choice test questions...wtf? Way to curb scalping? (I can't even imagine what London would go for.)

I see what you mean about a fund-raising effort under-minding the objective; I just wonder whether the tens (hundreds?) of thousands of people who are vying for tickets London and elsewhere are going to leave the show, ready to lobby to their politicians to get off their asses, or if they'll leave the show thinking, "Gee, that was a really entertaining act!" Just thinking out loud here, but I wonder if it would be more effective for the artists to perform a show like this actually IN Africa instead of FOR Africa. I don't know how the logistics would work (perform in more populated and developed cities, or rural areas and villages?) but it seems like it has more potential to be more provocative.

That might work, but on the other hand - it could go horribly wrong. Imagine staging a multi-million pound show, with some of the richest people in the world, in one of the POOREST countries. It would just seem, I don't know, icky.

And the concert is televised for all those who don't get tickets!

Eccch, good point. That would be sort of...icky's a good word. I suppose as it is now, there's potential for some sort of political pressure to occur. One of the best parts of the current U2 concert is when Bono asks the crowd to hold up their cell phones, and you see these thousands of little lights in the air. And he gets people to text message their name to a phone number to support the One campaign. It was actually quite a powerful thing to see. If they do something like that in London, it could be fantastic.

Do you know which concert they're televising? I imagine in North America, it'll mostly focus on Philly, which is...not so good. Are all the shows happening at the exact same time?

That sounds like an amazing thing to witness. Hopefully I will!

I'm not sure about the TV schedule, I know in the UK that the BBC is the host broadcaster, with different TV personalities based in each city to hold it all together, e.g. Jonathon Ross in London, Graham Norton in Philadelphia. I suppose it's up to each country's broadcaster to decide what to show, but I suppose they'll probably flit between the various acts as much as possible. The different time zones might help.

Are you old enough to remember LiveAid, and how that worked?

I'm old enough to have been around for LiveAid, but not old enough to remember how it worked. I think I know how it worked though, after doing a wee bit o' research on it and hearing about it on all those VH1 and MTV specials. That one was more of a telethon, right?

Oh! And before I forget, if you're still looking for tickets in Dublin, check out Interference. There's a few people looking to sell at face value.

Not only am I old enough to remember how it worked, I actually quit my crappy job to stay home and watch the broadcast. (Me: "I won't be in today. Or ever again.") It was going to be too long to tape on a measly 8 hour vhs, so I felt I had to watch it live.

MTV showed the whole thing and they cut back and forth between London and Philly. The big gimmick was that Phil Collins performed at both shows. And man, did he seem smug when he sang, "I've been waiting for this moment, for all of my life." Translation: Thank you starving Africans!

Interesting line-up arrangements. U2 played mid-afternoon in the bright sunshine. Madonna played even earlier, after being introduced by Bette Midler and needled for the Penthouse nude shots that had just been published. "But she pulled herself up by her bra straps and climbed back on the stage!" Madonna looked a bit pissed. She had Joan Crawford eyebrows.

George Michael introduced the Elton John cover as "Don't Let the Sun Go Down." My flatmate and I yelled at the screen "On ME! ON ME! you closet case!"

Ah, memories.

I have nothing to add about U2, but I gotta bump this thread from the third page! I'm still wondering when they'll announce the 3d leg opening act...anyone hear any new crazy rumors?

Today I went to Stars in the Alley and then The Light in the Piazza, and I absolutely loved Piazza. I thought the music was beautiful. I cannot wait for the Tonys.

Just a quickie before starting my second day at work. Oh boy, if yesterday was any indication...I'm in for a summer of busy work to end all busy work--the busiest of busy work! Whatever, it's better than sitting on my ass all day, and I'm getting paid (reasonably well) for it!

I haven't checked any of the U2 boards for a while, so I haven't heard any new rumors about opening acts, but I'd imagine they'd be announcing sometime soon, wouldn't you think?!?!?

Ech...back to "work."

Yuck, busy work. But making money is always a plus!

I haven't heard any more info on opening acts, but I was just trying to spark some discussion over here! I figured Ellie might jump in trying to scare us with talk of Celine Dion and U2 on the same stage.

I'm seeing The Killers on Saturday, can't wait. Hopefully it'll be a nice day (it's in Central Park).

Ooh, another random comment. I saw Norbert Leo Butz and Michelle Federer on the subway yesterday! They were too cute. I didn't bother them, just gaped at them.

Yeah, I just keep telling myself "fantasy trip to Europe...it'll all be worth it!" At least the work I was doing last summer felt somewhat quasi-important. Whatever...

I think I saw Michelle on the subway once. She is uber-skinny!!!

I'll try to come up w/ something U2-related next time!...Oh, that Live8 sounds AMAZING!!! What a crazy list of performers! I hope it's recorded for CD/DVD release sometime down the road.

Quick article, then I must start my first day at a SH*T job that I will likely quit before the month is over. re: (Unofficial) U2 World Tour Dates!

Related to opening act speculation, I think it's fair to say it won't be Oasis at MSG in October, eh? Liam...what a twat. There's a reason U2's been a successful group for 25 years strong, while Oasis will be best remembered because the brothers feud more than Romulus and Remus:

https://www.uk-flava.com/news/live/templates/?a=1325&z=5

Liam Gallagher Tells U2 To Lighten Up A Bit

The Oasis frontman couldn't believe a story he'd heard about the Irish group watching a video of their live show after they had come off stage and analysising it.

He told Sydney's Daily Telegraph, "W***ers. Haven't they got f**k all better to do? I'd rather be out there getting pi**ed.

"I certainly wouldn't go back after a gig and analyse it. No wonder they're the biggest band in the world: 'Oh Edge, the fourth guitar solo wasn't right tonight'. 'Oh, sorry Bono'.

"If that's what people think rock'n'roll is ..."

The 32-year-old singer added: "This is the best job in the world. It's even better when you're the best rock star.

"I'm the best f**king rock'n'roll singer this country's ever had."

Oasis release their sixth album, Don't Believe The Truth, on June 6 and the band begin their UK and Irish stadium tour at Glasgow's Hampden Park on June 29.
