James Cameron's 'Titanic' to get 3D release on April 6, 2012.

I figured they would do something "big" for the 100th Anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic (April 14, 1912).

Since this movie was not shot in 3D, I don't expect much. It will very likely look like one of those fast repurposing jobs they did on several recent 3D releases, where only the CGI effects will have a true 3D feel to them, but the actual live footage shots will be flat and 2D.

As I recall, there are several shots moving around the ship that were pretty much all CGI, so those should look great. But I wouldn't get my hopes up for an "Avatar" experience.

EDIT: I would be more interested to know if they would do an expanded release, since so much footage was excised for the final cut. I was actually hoping for a mini-series-type release, since Cameron's initial cut of the film ran something like 8 hours. Why not show the full thing on TV for huge ratings (and a new DVD set)?

As much as I despise 3-D, Cameron appears to be the only one who has mastered it. We'll see how Lucas does with his STAR WARS films but Cameron is a perfectionist and I am very curious to see how this will turn out.

I was just thinking the other day that they should rerelease the film in 2012 if they wanted to make some major cash.

Calling it an anniversary seems odd to me though. More like a memorial. Anniversary seems too celebratory for 1,500 dead people.

It's not really any different than the "anniversary" of 9/11 or Pearl Harbor or any other catastrophic event. Not saying it's right, but this doesn't necessarily stick out as odd to me because it's not like it's never done. And by definition, an anniversary can be a commemoration, which isn't necessarily celebratory.

THAT I'd love to see.

Anniversaries of catastrophic events are noted all the time with marketing tie-ins, creepy or not.

1991 saw a lot of WWII "Pearl Harbor Day" merchandise, sold as "50th Anniversary" commemorative stuff. This year is the 150th Anniversary (sesquicentennial) of the Civil War, and you're seeing tons of DVDs and other events being marketed exactly as such. I'm sure they'll have no problem noting the 100th Anniversary (centennial) of the sinking of the Titanic with the rerelease of this film and many, many historical documentary tie-ins. Probably a paperweight or two, as well.

I still have a copy of Titanic: the Board Game. It was given to me as a bad joke, because can you even imagine "9/11: The Board Game" or "Diana's Car Crash: The Board Game?" I guess when enough time has passed, it's okay for Milton Bradley or Parker Bros. to have "fun" with it.

Truth is, after a few margaritas and perhaps some Loony Tunes playing in the background, the Titanic board game is actually kinda "fun" to play. The goal is to get off the ship and into a lifeboat with your personal belongings before the ship sinks. Good god.

Actually, it's definitely a tie-in to the centennial of the sinking and not the anniversary of the film release. They're opening the 3D version on April 6th, one week before the 100th anniversary.

besty, have you seen this? It's available for rent for birthday parties. The caption reads: "If you're looking for a centerpiece for your event, this is it! Guaranteed to catch the eye of everyone, walking or driving by. This amazing slide is great fun and you won't be able to keep the kids off of it, or the adults from taking pictures of it."

I saw something like it at the L.A. County Fair a few years ago, I kid you not. I wonder how long before we see the Twin Towers "bouncy room" for parties.

I'm thinking 75-90 years.

The expanded version would be awesome. I'm not sure if there are even more cut scenes than those included on the special edition dvd. I'm sure there were. Even if that made the movie 4 hours, I'd still see it, ha.

Love the board game. I've seen that bouncy thing before, I think it's totally tacky and in poor taste. Although they also have 'Titanic Survivor' Halloween costumes. What's next, an Auschwitz easy-bake oven?

Maybe for the 100th Anniversary of "Schindler's List," we'll get a 3D release from Universal.

I can just hear some dude (probably many) watching Titanic with their 3D glasses on and saying, "Whoa! When that guy fell six stories and hit the propellor blade, man, I felt like I was THERE! Totally cool!"

Ugh.

Aww. I was totally gearing up for a joke about 3D boobies.

TheatreDiva, thanks for ruining my girl crush.

The costumes were just 1912 style clothing with like, fake icicles and stuff. I don't know if they still sell them or if it was just in the post-movie craze when everything was related to Titanic, lol.

You mean the intelligent, sensitive, and heart-tugging spitting scene will now be in 3-D?? Lines like "Bugger me!" will now be in even more amplified sound?? Where do I sign up?

LOL, BB. If anything was shot over a green screen, which includes most on-deck shots looking out over water, and perhaps loogies, etc., they can separate the CGI backgrounds and make the stuff behind them 3D.

The difference will be with any footage of actors or sets. It wasn't photographed with a 3D camera, so, at best, you'll get the look of flat paperdoll cutouts with no depth to them, in front of a background in CG with depth.

It won't be Avatar. Not by a long shot.

I didn't see it the first time around, and I probably won't see it again. Being a 7th grader at the time, the girly hype all around me really turned me off.

Which is funny, because I have great respect for both Kate and Leo and when I did finally saw the movie (some 8 years later), I actually enjoyed it.
