Stepford Wives was a complete travesty however Bette was a flicker of light in it.

Merely in the casting credits or prominently featured in? Because Cats & Dogs 2: The Revenge of Kitty Galore would be the clear winner in the former (it was on a plane ride, I swear). But for the latter it is Scenes from a Mall. I have seen neither The Stepford Wives or The Women remakes.

I would have to say that just about all of the films that she made after the BIG FOUR ("Down & Out in Beverly Hills", "Ruthless People", "Outrageous Fortune" and "Beaches") were all pretty much train wreck candidates. I did like when Oprah interviewed her that in the voiceover she claimed that "Miss Midler has three Oscar nominations". The last count I had was two, one for "The Rose" (her best movie) and "For The Boys". Personally I feel that her ability or lack their of of creating a different character for her for each film makes it hard for her.
Personally I would have loved to have seen what she would have done had she made "MISERY" but chickened out.

She was supposed to be in MISERY? OH MY GOD.
That would've either been amazing or awful.
(I love Kathy Bates and it's one of her best performances.)

I can believe that, at least for the nun parts. I don't know if Bette has enough tough girl in her for the other scenes.

I was going to say Scenes from a Mall and/or That Old Feeling, but man, there really are some clunkers out there with her in them. The Stepword Wives, Yikes! And I think I just simply blocked "Isn't She Great?" out. That tv movie with Michele was better and that had her as Jacqueline and someone as Ethel Merman bumping and grinding.
Bette, at her best, is a bag of tricks that can work really really well. I don't mean that as a slam, but I've never found her to be an actress of any noteworthy range. I agree that Down and Out, Ruthless People, Outrageous Fortune and yes, even Big Business make me laugh to this day. First Wives Club, too.
Beaches....I don't know. I think I was fourteen when it came out, so it certainly spoke to me on a number of levels. CeCe and her weirdly ageless struggles and the ups and downs she shares with Barbara Hershey's lips seemed another jewel in Bette's crown, but these years later it's just such a ... it's like calculated and earnest all at the same time. I always feel like it's a movie that tries really really hard to make me cry and I just don't. I do feel bad about it.
Sister Act was indeed written for Bette Mider. Paul Rudnick wrote an article about it for The New Yorker, but I think the online version of it is behind a paywall. It was just a fun and dishy account of the tumult behind that screenplay. The earlier drafts of it are out in the interents somewhere.

First off, I actually like SCENES FROM A MALL. It's so deliciously early 90's and silly that I do enjoy watching it. And I agree with Namo that I'll never understand why people treat FOR THE BOYS so poorly. I think it's a fantastic film with fantastic performances all around.

I don't really count Stepford Wives or The Women, since those were really Nicole Kidman and Meg Ryan movies.
But in terms of Bette movies, I'd go with Isn't She Great as her worst, since Drowning Mona was more of an ensemble movie.

Funny this question is being asked now, after I just spent the last month or so re-watching quite a few of her films. last night was For The Boys, which is a great film, that I've always enjoyed.
But, Jinxed has to be it. I could only get about half way through the film before taking it out of the player in frustration.
I still can't figure out why no one told Ken Wahl to pluck his giant eye brow.

I'm going to go with Scenes from a Mall, mostly because I hate anything Woody Allen...then Stella, which I thought was pure schlock.
