Stella is one of my all time faves. It gets me everytime.
As far as "For The Boys", I really wanted to love it, but it was bad IMO. It needed a better director. It was too long, tried to tell too much. It was bloated. The age make-up was BAD BAD BAD and the story arch was all over the place. I just didn't like it.

Don't know what that makeup looked like in motion, but that still looks pretty good, though they should have given her contacts to age the eyes a bit. That is what gives it way.

For the Boys has some wonderful musical numbers and some ghastly old-age make-up. The script is problematic but generally endearing. Martha Raye sued saying Bette stole her life.
Beaches- well, it is what it is. Maudlin, manipulative and somehow very watchable.
Down & Out and Big Business are just delightful. I think they prove that you need to use Bette sparingly- a very little goes a long way.
Hocus Pocus? Every time I see it I marvel that Disney released a film that mocked a kid for STILL being a virgin at 14.
Beaches- well, it is what it is. Maudlin, manipulative and somehow very watchable.
Down & Out and Big Business are just delightful. I think they prove that you need to use Bette sparingly- a very little goes a long way.

Hocus Pocus sort of lives on for that very reason. How could this pass as a children's film at all? Though I have to say knowing about Thora Birch's parents now, little Thora constantly saying 'virgin' was as close to G-rated as it was going to get for her.
Confession: I would pay untold amounts of money to see Bette and Ari Graynor as a mother and daughter in a comedy.
And stars for everybody not even trying to pass off Big Business or First Wives Club as bad Bette movies. Though I have to say, Bette got the short end of the stick in the plot of FWC. But she and Goldie made it watchable with Diane Keaton doing... something.

The sorry thing about STELLA is it actually had a pretty good script, the director clearly couldn't get Midler's performance under control. Shame.

I think the make-up in For the Boys looks worse in motion.
I still love Big Business, though. Without reservation and without shame. I got the blu ray at Target for five bucks!

While I acknowledge that it's not a great movie, I can watch Ruthless People over and over and over again. I just love it. That said, I recognize that The Rose is clearly her best.
