The answer can be boiled down to two names: Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett. Both justices are significantly more conservative than their predecessors and both are comfortable manipulating the court’s procedures to reach radical results. At the same time, both justices excel in overruling precedent without acknowledging it. SCOTUS has already taken a case that will probably gut abortion rights by June 2022. But with its new law, Texas handed Kavanaugh and Barrett a gift: They could eviscerate Roe months earlier without writing a single word. The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals did the dirty work for SCOTUS by preventing a federal judge from blocking the ban or even holding a hearing on its constitutionality. All the justices had to do was nothing. It's truly shameful.
They care about kids being born, but afterwards? They don't give a fu*k what happens to those poor, unwanted children. That is someone else's problem. Despicable.

Sutton,I agree with everything you posted 100%. I,too,am disgusted. And thoroughly pissed off. These are the same people who won't mandate masks in schools,while children under 12 cannot yet receive the Covid vaccine.

Fu*king unbelievable. Hypocrisy at its finest. As I grew up I realized how important it was for me to have full reproductive freedom and be able to make my own decisions about my own body. I'm proud that New York values and cares about women.
In Texas, your Uncle/Father/Brother can rape you and you cannot get an abortion. I have felt nauseous the entire day due to this dystopian law passing.

Perhaps it is time to establish SCOTUS term limits. And/or, increase number of Judges from 9 to 11.

I don't have adequate words for this...I had a minutia of hope for SCOTUS because of other various rulings they recently made and seemingly ACB was willing to set aside her religious beliefs in favor of constitutionality considering how she voted in recent rulings. My hope quotient just dropped to basically zero. As someone's who's infertile this is SCARY for me....And them dropping a document at midnight just last night saying they won't intervene is essentially a sign of how the Mississippi case will go...and Roe thereafter. My surge capacity is at it's limit with this and climate fallout from yesterday.
RBG couldn't have died at worse time even if she consciously tried. I know she wanted to fight til the better end and I can't blame her for it, but WHY OH WHY didn't she just retire during the Obama years...

It's BEYOND time, but I've lost hope for this to happen. We barely have a majority in Congress and they won't play hardball.

Always think long term. It's actually not a good idea to increase the bench because that is what us liberals want RIGHT NOW. I agree with Biden about it and it will not be happening.

Actual question, not being snarky. Why is it not a good idea? And I very much am a long term brain, but this seems to be a scenario where this doesn’t apply. We need action YESTERDAY, both literal and figurative. The platitudes from lawmakers are meaningless when a law protecting women’s reproductive rights that’s only existed for 1-1.5 generations is in danger. The GOP has no issue playing dirty and it’s time the Dems start to play hardball.

Who is we? I think it's a good idea. You do too. We are both female liberal Democrats. It's not considered a good idea for millions of people and you know that the GOP will f*ck us later if we do this now. You know that. The proposal last April to expand the court went nowhere. Nancy said she wouldn't even bring it to the floor. It's not happening. But term limits are being talked about much more seriously than ever before. Because that really needs to happen.

^^^I’m glad something was said…he’s been skirting even uttering the word ‘abortion’. And I’m glad he seemingly believes it’s not up to gov’t to decide, but in the famed words of Eliza D… “Words, words, words, I’m so sick of words”. We need action. Or at least what “whole of govt” means here. No regrets voting for him when a fascist was on the ballot, but his wanting to be bipartisan is getting us nowhere. I admire bipartisanship in normal times. We all know this ain’t normal times.
