To paraphrase his mentor:
This is a man who thinks with his heart,
His heart is not always wise.
This is a man who stumbles and falls,
But this is a man who tries.
This is a man you'll forgive and forgive,
And help protect, as long as you live...
He will not always say
What you would have him say,
But now and then he'll do
Something
Wonderful.
....
He'll always
Need your love
And so he'll get your love.
A man who needs your love
Can be
Wonderful.

My thoughts: he's a private man who will never be comfortable with how PUBLIC he has made his inner-most thoughts and feelings. A man not at home in the spotlight.
He is the best thing to happen to the theatre world in the last 50 years.

Posted: 3/11/06 at 6:21pmActually, I told my friend (who is gay) that Stephen Sondheim was gay and that Leonard Bernstein had been gay and he freaked out on me and made this big deal about how he didn't think he could listen to their music anymore. It really threw me for a loop. I didn't mention anything about any dungeons.

How shocking it must have been for him to find out that there are gay people in the theatre. And let's not get started with playwrights, directors, choreogaphers and designers.

Posted: 3/11/06 at 6:55pmYou know, I have a (gay) friend as well who was shocked to find out that Sondheim was gay. I named most of the people you mentioned, Margo, and a slew of others and he said, "Well, I knew about them, but really? STEPHEN Sondheim? I don't even know what to do with myself now."

I always assumed it was pretty comon knowledge. I remember YEARS ago when friends and I figured that West Side Story had to be the gayest show in history considering its composer (Bernstein), lyricist (Sondheim), book writer (Laurents), director/choreographer (Robbins), leading man (Kert), not to mention most of the Jets and Sharks were all gay. Some stereotypes about musical theatre are 100% true.
