Then you need to look a bit deeper. No other country has given of themselves as much as the USA, both in material as well as volunteer resources. Whenever there is a crisis in the world, the USA is the first to donate relief money and send volunteers.
How much money has the US sent to help other nations build? How much money has the US sent to AIDS crisis and famine relief?
The USA is a great nation and that is why people are desperately trying to cross the borders to get here, often risking their lives to do so.
Don't like it? Let me invite you to leave and go to whatever country you feel works better than the US.

Not quite. The USA is a good nation, clearly better than its neighbors to the south with respect to opportunity. Comparing us to other advanced nations, however, we rank far below the top in most metrics.

The idea of this country is so far away from the reality that to me it seems absolutely nuts to inflate the delusion to the near-breaking point every 4th of July. And I don't like to join in on the collective delusion.

Man i wish UK politics brought out this much passion in people (though the recent election had people going crazy with the UKip party doing so well in Europe).People here just seem to know what the truth is, each party is hugely flawed and in the end they will all disappoint, vote for the lesser of the evils here, the line between the left and right is so blurred now that it barely exists here. I guess in America that ever present line is still there to divide though.

Just because Congress isn't effective, it does not justify the president violating the Constitution. The American people get to elect their representatives every 2 years, and a third of the Senate every two years. If they don't like what Congress is doing, they need to elect different people to Congress, not allow the President to subvert the separation of powers. The executive powers of the President are designed to aid him in doing his enumerated duties under the Constitution to enforce the laws passed by Congress, not make the laws or take action where Congress has failed to do so. The House has passed at least two immigration bills that I know of that have never been brought to the floor of the Senate for a vote. Having been told in at least four recent opinions that his unilateral actions are contrary to the Constitution (which each President swears on Inauguration Day he will protect and defend), Obama continues to thumb his nose at the way our government has been established. No president has the right to do that.
And Congress isn't "fighting tooth and nail." Congress is basically preventing anything from happening. GOP has the House; Democrats have the Senate. A plague on both their houses.

But Congress IS "fighting tooth and nail" "to keep anything from happening." That's not leading. That's just saying no. That's taking the ball and sitting on it to make sure the other team can't score.
People who still buy into the whole "America is the greatest nation in the world!" mentality should really take a step back and read into how things work elsewhere. Every country has their own plus and minus columns, but the US's aren't any better than many other countries. I would argue that several have many more pros than the US does. Seeing all this "YAY 'MURRICA!" "GOD BLESS THE USA" "BEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD!" stuff all over Facebook, mixed with stories of the Supreme Court decision, female judge dissension, Hobby Lobby, loss of abortion clinic safe zones, the poor getting poorer, corporations cutting hours so they don't have to pay for insurance, sexism, racism and a good friend losing his job because after a corporate buy out, he just didn't seem like he fit the idea of where the company was headed (Right to work states RULE!), I am happy to be watching from afar. I would venture to say that the country was never the city on the hill that people felt it was before the information age arrived. Blinders and cheerleading contributed to that. As the economic divide widens, the valleys are much much deeper than any hill could be. Patriotism is great, but it should be honest and informed. I am glad I was born in the US and love to visit, but it's not the place I would ever raise my family.

Two things - it is not the number of executive orders that troubles me. Executive orders are not per se illegal or unconstitutional. Many presidents used them because the laws PASSED BY CONGRESS gave to the president the authority to determine how certain provisions would be implemented. But when an executive order changes the laws as PASSED BY CONGRESS (which the president does not have the authority to do), or determines a policy that has been set by Congress, it is a different matter.
And the other thing - I am not saying America is perfect. But I am saddened that so many people seem to have no respect for us as a nation. You cannot improve what you do not care about. And there is no greater enemy of human progress than apathy. And there is no country in the world that has greater personal freedom than we do. The very things that are being posted in this thread could be the basis for an arrest in much of the world.

Every country in the (developed) world encourages its citizens to believe they live in the best country in the world: the UK does it, the French do it, even the Russians do it. The fact that the Russians are so patriotic when the Western perspective is that they should be hanging their heads in shame shows just how much we all are susceptible to our local and national media, with its hidden corporate and governmental agendas.
But the debate, in the West at least, seems futile. Modern social demographics suggest to me that most Western democracies are much of a muchness and that our comfortable lifestyles are possibly being maintained at the expense of the developing world.
I can be as guilty of falling into nationalistic pride as anyone but I do recognise it for what it is, and its self-delusory limitations. And if I ever had to leave the UK, it would be one of the liberal Northern European democracies such as Norway, Sweden, Denmark or The Netherlands that I'd head for - all countries that seem to take the best interests of their citizens the most seriously.
