I don't get it. Why during non-Halloween season would I want to wear clothing with skulls on it? I know those designs are very popular in the hispanic community...is it relevant to their cultural history or something? I live in a highly populated hispanic city.
But I recently visited several other states and clothing stores in those states also featured several t-shirt designs with skulls on it. And it's everywhere. Sunglasses, wallets, ties, jackets, headbands, hats, jewelry, etc. Gross.

Why gross? Skulls have often been in fashion. I wear them often and I'm anything but hispanic. I like skulls. Does it disturb you to see them? If so, I can understand, but if not, what difference does it make?

Does this complaint seem at least ten years late to anyone else?
I few of my shirts have skulls on them that I didn't realize were there until I really looked at the shirt. i find it a little strange.

Not sure I'd call it 'gross', but they are often used to symbolize death - and even if that isn't always the intention, I can't say I'm fond of seeing them.
And, yes, this has been going on for quite awhile.
While it may be nothing new, I find it to be a GROWING trend rather than a dying one.
I'm not a fan. Too morbid. When shopping a lot of items attract my eye but more often than not there is a skull incorporated into the design which would have otherwise been a purchase for me.

I feel the same way. Just recently I was out shopping and saw a set of coasters that matched my decor. I picked them up and there was a huge skull on them. Yuck.
My guess is that this started with the whole pirates trend circa 2005, and then evolved from there. It kind of goes along with Ed Hardy...we're all trying to show how badass we are these days.
I think it may have become more popular with punk. In the 80's.

Hot Topic and companies of its ilk mainstreamed morbid subcultures. Skulls have been popular in punk and goth clothing for a long time. Then preps started wearing the mall goth clothes, so the skulls made a jump to the prep clothes.
I don't know why it's specifically popular right now, but then I haven't personally seen it outside of the obvious niche retailers. I assumed Skull Prep died when people stopped listening to Avril Lavigne.

I thought I was the only one that noticed. I went to the mall last week and stopped by Express and Nordstrom, and plenty of their shirts had skulls or something to that effect.
I'm hispanic and I don't think skulls are a big part of our community. It could be linked to a Mexican holiday called Dia de los muertos which honors the dead. (It's celebrated right after halloween.)
Skulls usually aren't my cup of tea but I really love McQueen's skull clutches.

People used to put skulls in artwork as memento mori. But I doubt that folks making pajamas in a tiny skull print are really thinking that hard about reminding people of their mortality.
I haven't noticed it as heavily in the last couple years......

Hello Skully!
SO KAWAII!! >_<
Just saw these adorable little piggy banks in Urban Outfitters~
They're just precious, Jane!
Aren't they though? Perfect for a little girl's room - pink!
Every little girl needs one!
Seriously, about the "little girls"...I can't tell you how many articles of clothing I have looked at for CHILDREN with skulls on them. My kids perceive the whole skull thing very negatively. It scares them. And they're EVERYWHERE. Some parents think it's cool or funny though. I just think it's creepy.
To be honest, Henry used to have a pair of dark gray shorts with little skull and crossbones on them (a la the preppy kind with whales and stuff). But that was when he was into pirates.
