I wasn't aware of how ubiquitous skulls were until this thread!
Jane, you have no idea! Sometimes when I'm shopping with the kids, we don't even realize there's a skull or two in the design until we "study" it. And skulls are everywhere...they're like Louis Vuitton!
Well now that is weird! there must be a conspiracy behind it~
Has anyone else thought that the McQueen skull clutch posted earlier in the thread doubles nicely as a legal substitute for brass knuckles?

I know I did. Oh if only they had the proper advertising team and spokesperson:
"For the woman who still wants to look cute while kicking a purse snatchers ass...McQueen Skull Clutches, have at it!!!!"
The diamond industry can take a lesson from British artist Damien Hirst. His latest work is a platinum cast of an 18th century man’s skull, encrusted with 8,601 flawless diamonds weighing a total of 1,200 carats. The skull titled ‘For the Love of God’ is part of a larger exhibit of his work which opened in London this month. The 18cm-tall piece has a tag of $98 million and has been dubbed the most expensive work by a living artist

Diva, I think that Hirst skull is amusing and entertaining in a silly, happy sort of way, don't you? It's very humorous! (And the teeth are straighter than mine!)

I was very puzzled by Diva's "latest work" of Hirst's since I saw it almost three years ago at Cheim and Reade - then saw your article is just as old. Stunning piece, in photographs and upclose.
I love anything covered in diamonds.

I love that it looks so happy. Like "Fck yeah, DIAMONDS!"
LOL!
Diamonds are a skull's best friend!!!
^Ha!
It may not be what caused the "explosion," but I first started really noticing the skulls when Ralph Lauren started doing them, 3 or 4 years ago. He did them, at first, in a very preppy sort of way, in repp ties. I kind of thought at the time it was a sort of Yale Skull and Bones Club allusion.
It was after that I started seeing them everywhere in mainstream fashion (though as people have pointed out, they've been around in a more underground way for years).
the least that skull could do is have its teeth fixed if it's going to wear those diamonds.
The skulls with bows are pretty popular..
Now those are kind of cute. In fact, they don't look like skulls.
They look like old Scrubbing Bubbles.
A Scrubbing Bubble skeleton!

With bows to boot! Almost too cute. Wish you'd had a chance to see that Hirst in person, Diva. It was beautifully lit and simply stunning.
This thread is cracking me up...........
