I was born the year Miss Garland died so I missed all of her drama. I grew up with Judy and Peggy Lee because my mother played their records all of the time. To me Judy was a wonderful singer and a fabulous actress. Her Irene Hoffman was brilliant. I have seen all of her movies and concerts and I love the talent. If I ever get sad or depressed, all I do is put on Judy's Carnegie Hall CD and it is magic. To me Judy is the Greatest Entertainer of all Time
Your mother raised you right.
The only observation I would like to make about Judy's later concert years is as she got older, she did less new material. Audiences loved to hear "Rockabye Your Baby", her MGM hits, and of course "Over The Rainbow", and Judy gave the public what they wanted. She didn't ignore new stuff...her version of "The Music That Makes Me Dance" is astonishing - but one wishes she had recorded MORE of it.
If she had been treated with care by CBS, and not trashed by them, it is likely she would still have been around for a few decades more.
MasterLcZ---There are so many songs that I would love to hear Judy's "take" on... And interesting enough, I got to see Jim Bailey do his "Judy" impersonation about 15 years ago... it was remarkable, although NOT the real thing. It actually haunted me for a long time.
He (as Judy) sang "I'm Still Here" and "I Am What I Am." It was incredible. It made me wonder how she would have tackled other Broadway standards written after her death...
Send in the Clowns
Not a Day Goes By
Children Will Listen
The Ladies Who Lunch
Song on the Sand
Be On Your Own
Time Heals Everything
...and so many others!
EDIT: And I'll bet she would have given us the definitive version of "Memory."
This will be available later this year...but I don't know WHEN. Until then, I will have to make do with the Hattie McDaniel stamp, due out next month!
Best2bars... I love your list. I suspect Judy would, too.
b12, Buckley might be reading this.
You'd best lock your doors.
Rath, when you think of how Judy would have reached for the Heavyside Layer at the crescendo and sung the words "Touch me! It's so easy to leave me..."
I think even Betty would have to give it up for Judy.
Oh please. No way.
That's a really tacky question.
I often listen to this same album. I love when she talks to the audience. She had talent with or without pills and booze. I believe she could have been even greater if she could've beat the pills. Her TV series is phenomenal, but CBS set her up to fail.
I actually don't think she really LOST anything as she got older. No, the voice wasn't as pure as it was in the early years. But she gained a whole new layer of depth with it. Listen to her Ol Man River. Chills.
With Liza, Its a different story.
and, I don't care if Betty Buckley is reading this, she was MUCH better in every way when she was younger.
